Call for participation for “Pursuing a career in Chinese art in the UK”
An event co-organised by BPCS and MEAA
October 3rd 2017, 12:30-17:00 in Bath

This event is aimed at postgraduate students and early career academics interested in Chinese art, whether as a career or as a source for their research. As the sectors of Chinese art higher education and art market are evolving fast in the UK, this event invites participants to reflect on and prepare for a career related to the arts of China.

Event schedule:

1) Visit of the MEAA (Museum of East Asian Arts, Bath) in small groups: an occasion to network among each other. (Free for selected participants. Tate new media art histories in Asia doctoral funding

NEW MEDIA ART HISTORIES IN ASIA

The Courtauld Institute of Art and Tate Research Centre: Asia invite applications for a fully funded AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Partnership Award, starting in September 2017 for a period of three years.

The award will enable the student to pursue doctoral research in Art History while gaining first-hand experience of work within a museum setting. The successful applicant will receive their degree from The Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London.The supervisors are: Dr Wenny Teo (The Courtauld Institute of Art) and Dr Sook-Kyung Lee (Tate Research Centre: Asia).

I’m pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications for our Project Pengyou Leadership Fellows Program at Harvard University on September 15-18, 2017.

Fellows will be invited to participate in an intensive four-day Leadership Summit at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA to meet other like-minded young leaders, build unique community organizing skills and learn about cross-cultural leadership in the US-China context. With support from the Ford Foundation, Project Pengyou will cover lodging, food and training costs at Harvard University for all Fellows. A number of travel stipends will also be provided. Social Change in China summer school

The Department of China Studies of Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University invites students of all nationalities to the China Studies Summer School in “Social Change in China”.

The summer school runs from Saturday 1 to Saturday 29 July 2017 and will take the students to Xi’an, Chengdu and Hangzhou, as well as introducing them to Suzhou, the home of XJTLU.

FEATURES

This course is concerned with the major changes undergone by Chinese society since the beginning of reform and openness strategy in 1978. Placing these changes in historical perspective, it focuses on three broad topics, each of which is considered in depth: social classes; regional diversity; equality. All three are set in the historical context of China’s emergence as a growing international economic and political force. This course bring students to historical sites in Suzhou, Hangzhou, Xi’an and Chengdu. Work on the three broad topics will follow a similar pattern, comprising lectures, discussion groups, site explorations and practical projects. I. Call for Entries
RCT invites Chinese scholars or research students in mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau or overseas regions to participate the 19th Stephen C. Soong Translation Studies Memorial Awards (2016–2017). General regulations are as follows:
II. General regulations
(i) All Chinese scholars or research students affiliated to higher education/research institutes in mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau or overseas regions are eligible to apply.
(ii) Submitted articles must be written in either Chinese or English and published in a refereed journal within the calendar year 2016. Each candidate can enter up to two articles for the Awards. The publication date, title and volume/number of the journal in which the article(s) appeared must be provided.
(iii) Up to three articles are selected as winners each year. A certificate and a cheque of HK$3,000 will be awarded for each winning entry.
(iv) The adjudication committee, which consists of renowned scholars in Translation Studies from Greater China, will meet in May 2017. The results will be announced in June 2017 and winners will be notified individually.
(v) Articles submitted will not be returned to the candidates.
(vi) Two new submission mechanisms have been introduced since 2010 to the Stephen C. Soong Translation Studies Memorial Awards. They are:
Nomination: scholars are welcome to nominate outstanding journal articles in the field for the Awards.
Email submission: in addition to mail-in submissions, electronic or scanned journal papers via emails are also accepted.
III. Submission
Entries can be made by email attachment or by post (postmarked on or before the deadline). For email submission, please attach a scanned PDF version of the published article. For postal submission, please provide the original or a photocopy of the journal entry.

Made in China Summer School 2017

We are excited to announce the inaugural Made in China Summer School—’Labour and Rights in an Era of Global Precarity: Views from China’—which will be held on the ancient island of San Servolo, in the Venetian lagoon, from 17 to 21 July, 2017.

MA Program in Intercultural Communication Studies, Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA)

Introduction

STA’s bilingual (Chinese and English) MA program in Intercultural Communication Studies now recruits excellent students with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent from top international and Chinese universities. This two-year English-taught program includes the required first year full-time residency and an optional second year residency for project-based internships. All students in residency are sponsored by STA with scholarships (tuition, accommodation, and stipend). After the first year, when the course work is completed, students can choose where to live and intern when they write their MA theses. Duration of study for the MA degree could be extended to maximum of four years. MA theses can be written in Chinese or English. The students will study three courses: Chinese opera, Chinese culture, Chinese language. The main course is the traditional Chinese opera, which is composed of the learning of Chinese opera steps and movements, water sleeve routines, spear and sword routines, and selected scene work.
