Holiday Season is Here
It is hard to believe that the holiday season is upon us. Thanksgiving is only two weeks away and Christmas will come fast. I hope you had a good Veterans Day and had a chance to reflect upon the many blessings we have due to the efforts of our Veterans. Thank you to all that have served.
Late fall is one of my favorite times of the year. Harvest is usually winding down, the cooler temperatures outside makes a cup off coffee in the morning even better, Buckeye football is in full tilt, and nearly all of my program planning for the start of the next year is complete. Stay tuned throughout the winter for information on some great programming in Henry and surround counties.
The arctic weather over the weekend really through a wrench in things from harvest in the fields to taking care of some annual fall chores. You have seen me write a time or two that many of our yearly garden and lawn projects can be planned somewhat by the holidays. Easter, Memorial Day, Labor Day and Thanksgiving are important ones to keep in mind.
That said, if not already done, with single degree temperatures as I write this, we may have missed out on some of the winter proofing of perennial plants such as mulching strawberries or tying rose canes. In a normal year mid to late November is a good time to fertilize lawns after the grass has begun to go dormant. I think it is safe to chalk 2019 up as the year of nothing normal as it applies to weather and growing conditions.
Having talked to some farmers over the past couple of weeks, even though progress has been slow, yields have been pleasing given the circumstances of the year. The next challenge this crop will face will be getting the still standing fields harvested. Once this snow melts, we will almost need another solid stretch of frozen soil to wrap things up.
Don’t forget that the first of two days of Farm Bill ARC/PLC Decision programs will take place next Monday, November 18 at the American Legion in Napoleon. There are two programs scheduled that day, one at 9:00 a.m. and one at 7:00 p.m. The same agenda will be repeated the following Monday, November 25 at the Hamler Fire House. I’ll wrap up this week with a quote from Anton Chekhov: “People don’t notice whether it’s winter or summer when they’re happy.” Have a great week.
