• Our Lawrence County Junior Fair, 4-H & FFA, schedule has been released! It can be found at Lawrence County Fair | Lawrence (osu.edu)
  • As a part of the schedule, we implement many Cloverbud Events and this year the Cloverbud Parade will be “Dress as Your Favorite Animal”!                     
• The Lawrence County 4-H Committee is sponsoring a “4-H Doing More In 2024″ Community Service Challenge! Clubs can submit one entry per community service event completed from November 1, 2023 to June 27th, 2024. Entries can be submitted at https://go.osu.edu/lawcodomorechallenge
• Quick reminder, Lawrence County Lamb, Goat, and Hog Tag In is scheduled for this Saturday, April 27th from 8:00 – 10:00am at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds.
  This is the same day as the Proctorville/Rome Clean Up Day so we will be using the midway entrance and exit through the Fairland end. Do not use the barn entrance! Please follow instructions once you are on the grounds. Reminder, all animals must be on the grounds between 8:00 – 10:00 am to be tagged for the Lawrence County Fair
  Another reminder, exhibitors will be required to submit pictures of their livestock with Fair Tag ID present. There will be stations set up day of tag in to help with this process, but you can also complete on your own by following the instructions at https://go.osu.edu/lawcotagid This must be completed by April 30th.

• Cloverbud Discovery Days start today, Monday, April 8 at 6:00pm at the Extension Office. It will continue through this month:
  • Tuesday, April 16th
  • Wednesday, April 24th
  • Thursday, May 2nd

• Quality Assurance Test-Out Opportunity, Tuesday, April 9th, 3:00 – 5:00pm. Livestock members, 12 and older, who have at least one year of Livestock Exhibition experience can test out of Quality Assurance. Come take the test during open office hours 3:00 – 5:00pm. Members can take the 12-14 year old test or the 15-18 year old test, based on their 4-H age. Once members take and pass the 12-14 year old test, they are not required to take Quality Assurance again until age 15. Once at least 15 years old, members can take the test, and with a passing score will not be required to take Quality Assurance again. If this date, does not work for you – please contact our office for an appointment.
• Registration for Spring Fling, April 27-28, is now available at go.osu.edu/CantersSpringFling 
  Campers in grades 3-6 will enjoy a fun, one-night stay at camp jam packed with all sorts of fun activities! Don’t miss it! Register by April 15th! • Horse Exhibitors: May 1st is an important date for you to mark on your calendar! By May 1st, horse exhibitors must complete their Equistep Training and their Horse ID form. Forms and Online Training link can be found here:

  • 2024 Equistep Training
    • If you would prefer to receive your Equistep Training in person, we will be hosting an in-person Equistep Training on Monday, April 15th at 7:00pm at the Extension Office. During the in-person Equistep Training, we will also be giving each family a copy of the Ohio 4-H Uniform Horse Rules, information regarding PAS shows, and upcoming county/state horse opportunities. If you are unable to make this in-person option, we will be mailing packets on the Tuesday following to all horse members, however members will be responsible to complete the online Equistep by May 1.
• Livestock Exhibitors: May 1 is also an important date for you, too! All livestock exhibitors are required to complete Quality Assurance by May 1st. Club Advisors trained as Assistant Instructors must submit your attendance sheets by May 1. Other upcoming important dates for Livestock members include:
  • Lamb, Goat and Hog Tag In: April 27th, 8:00 – 10:00 am at the Fairgrounds
    • Please note, we will not be housing animals at the fair based on your arrival time to tag in. It will be randomized using a numerical system, with an effort to group family and club members together.
  • Rabbit Tattooing: June 15th, 8:00 – 10:00am at the Fairgrounds
• 4-H Project Books: Most project books are in-stock and ready for pick up at the Extension Office. Cost for most are $8 but prices do vary based on the project book. All members enrolled in a 4-H project are required to complete their 4-H project book to be eligible for project judging/exhibition. Please contact our office before stopping by, so we can confirm your order is ready for pick up.

Lawrence County 4-H Volunteers, each of you should have received the following information in your email – but just in case you missed it:

The much anticipated 2024 Lawrence County 4-H Volunteer Training Recorded option is now available. Volunteers must complete each step in the order below by March 15th!

Please allow for 1 hour to complete each of the following requirements.  So, to complete this option:

1.) Volunteers must register and watch the entire recorded zoom at: https://go.osu.edu/2024lawcotrainingrecording Please note your registration and view time is recorded.

2.) Volunteers must complete the volunteer training survey found at: https://go.osu.edu/2024lawcotrainingsurvey. You must have the passcode provided during the recorded training to access the survey.

3.) Volunteers must also complete the online 2024 Ohio 4-H Youth Activities and Programs Policy Training found at: https://go.osu.edu/YAP, Once you complete, Ohio 4-H sends us an email of your certification, so if prompted, please be sure to check the box to have certificate emailed.

Again, each step must be complete by March 15th to be approved for the 2024 year! If you have any questions or have trouble accessing, please let us know.

March 7th:  Next Thursday, March 7th our office will be hosting a meet and greet. Members may stop by between 6-8pm and pick up their project books, ask questions about requirements, visit with teens and learn about the different 4-H opportunities. Members planning to exhibit livestock projects can also complete Quality Assurance at this time, if they register, at: Lawrence County Fair | Lawrence (osu.edu)

March 15th is deadline day:

• By March 15th all volunteers and members must be enrolled on oh.4honline.com to be eligible for project exhibition. Changes will be accepted until March 31st. Returning families should not create a new profile, so if you need help accessing your account please contact our office!
• By March 15th all volunteers must have completed their volunteer training for the year, been rescreened if it was their year to get a new background check, and turn in club paperwork (financials, club calendar, and constitution/by-laws). All club paperwork needed for your club can be found in the blue tab of your club’s 4-H packet given at volunteer training or to a designated volunteer who picked it up. Copies can also be found on our website at:Lawrence County 4-H Club Advisor Resources | Lawrence (osu.edu)  If you have yet to pick up your club packet for the year, please do so asap! Failure to complete club and volunteer requirements by the 15th could result in club termination.
  • Volunteer Training Recorded Online Option: Volunteers who did not attend the in-person volunteer training need to check their emails for access and instructions on how to complete the recorded zoom version. E-mail was sent today (February 29th). There are 3 parts to the online option; register and view the recording, complete the survey, and complete the Protecting Our Minors canvas course. Please follow the steps outlined in your email… if you can’t find your email – please contact us as we probably need to update your email in the 4-Honline system!
    • If you attended in-person volunteer training on February 3rd, you do not need to complete the online version.
• By March 15th any senior wishing to apply for senior scholarships must complete the applications. There are two applications available; as the Lawrence 4-H application is used for Lawrence 4-H Committee Scholarships and the Ohio Valley Bank Scholarship. The 2nd application is for the Junior Fair Sale Scholarship. Both applications can be found at: SCHOLARSHIPS

Quality Assurance:

• County-wide Quality Assurance (QA) trainings are happening this month, please visit: Lawrence County Fair | Lawrence (osu.edu) for dates and registration. Also found on the website is information on the YQCA option and test-out. Please note, there will be NO zoom options this year.
• Some of our 4-H Clubs opted to have volunteers trained at Quality Assurance Assistant Instructor Training on February 3rd. Clubs are to set dates and provide them to the Extension Office by March 15th. Only volunteers trained at the Assistant Instructor Training on February 3rd are able to provide Quality Assurance for the 2024 year.
• Important: ALL livestock exhibitors (market and breeding) must complete Quality Assurance by May 1.

Project Dates/Information:

• Dog Obedience – Orientation meeting set for March 27th at 6:00pm, Extension Office. No dogs permitted at this meeting.
• Market Chickens – the order form is available and chicks must be ordered and paid for by April 1st: Order Here
• Breeding Projects – the opportunity to lease projects is available this year, following all guidelines outlined in the rules and breeding lease form found at: Breeding Lease This does not apply to any market livestock project including market feeder heifers and steers. It is for breeding projects only.
  • Beef Feeder & Breeder Projects: With this change and some changes coming to the requirements of DUNF forms,  please be aware your breeding form and your feeder ID form will require a tag id, so please plan accordingly.
• Tag-In Dates – 
  • April 27th: Lamb, Goat, and Hog Tag-In from 8:00 – 10:00am, Lawrence County Fairgrounds.
  • June 15th: Rabbit Tattoo Date from 8:00 – 10:00am, Lawrence County Fairgrounds.
• Project Books – Project books are a requirement for all 4-H projects and for exhibition at the county fair. Project books can be purchased in our office, however we would suggest sending a quick email or calling our email to check our inventory before making the trip to our office. We do our best to keep project books in stock, but they are moving fast!

Hello! It’s time for your February 2024 4-H News:

• Lawrence County 4-H Online enrollment remains open for just a little over one month! Deadline to enroll is March 15th for all new and returning members and volunteers who wish to participate in the Junior Fair this year. To enroll, please visit oh.4honline.com. Returning members, if you need help remembering your login information, please contact our office… do not create a new profile!
• Lawrence County Meet & Greet, Set Up for Project Success is scheduled for Thursday, March 7, 6:00 – 8:00pm, Extension Office. During this time, club volunteers are welcome to set up a table to be available for new club members to enroll, for a club meeting, etc. It is our hope you would use this time to help 4-H members be successful with their 4-H projects. Our office will remain open so project books can be purchased, questions can be answered about project requirements, and teens will be around to share helpful hints! Club participation is not required, and youth are welcome to stop by, even if their club isn’t hosting a table, and participate. New members still looking for a club or needing help enrolling are welcome, too!

In-Person Annual Meeting, February 3rd: We are looking forward to volunteer training next weekend, February 3rd at Open Door School at 10:00am. We have an exciting agenda with our teen’s helping to present the meeting! We will be having pancakes & fruit. This is compliments of the Lawrence County 4-H Teen Leaders, as a thank you for your time and commitment to our youth; so we hope you can make it! Please register before Friday, February 1st as we will be shopping Friday during the work day. To register, visit: go.osu.edu/lawcovolunteertraining

This annual meeting will be the only in-person volunteer training option; and as a reminder volunteer training is required for ALL new and returning volunteers annually. We will be covering 2024 club expectations and updates, recognition, and will end with Quality Assurance Assistant Instructor Training and the Occassional Quality Cooks Training. QA Assistant Instructor Training is required ANNUALLY for any club to conduct Quality Assurance at their club meetings. This will be the only club volunteer training for QA. Also, during this time, we will be offering split sessions so another volunteer from your club can attend the Occassional Quality Cooks Training which is required to serve food at meetings, fundraise with food, etc.

We highly recommend at least one volunteer from each club attend the In-Person Meeting.

But, I’m sure some of you are wondering… what if we can’t?

In addition to setting up an appointment with Rachael for at least one volunteer from the club to receive your 4-H club packet for the year, here are your options:

On-Line Zoom Training, February 22nd, via Zoom at either 5:00pm or 7:00pm.  CANCELLED.

Volunteer Lunch & Learns, offered at noon on Wednesday’s starting February 14th thru March 13th.

Choosing this option, you must register and attend a minimum of two virtual lunch and learns, as well as complete the online Policy 1.50 Protecting Our Minors Training.

Hello! Wow, its 2024, I hope everyone is as ready to kickoff their 4-H club season as we are!

As we begin our new year, we have important information to share:

1. 4-HOnline Enrollment: Enrollment for the new year is open! All new and returning volunteers and members must enroll by March 15th! To enroll, please visit: https://oh.4honline.com Returning families: do not create a new profile, use your current 4-Honline email to log-in, if you need help with this information – please contact our office. 4-Honline information, specifically e-mail, is how we share our information – so please make sure your email is up to date. Volunteers who are completing their BCI rescreening, it is very important you complete your yearly 4-Honline enrollment when you submit your BCI check so Ohio 4-H and OSU HR can connect it to your account. Failure to do so in a timely manner, results in more misplaced BCI screenings.
2. Annual Volunteer Training: Late last week, an e-mail was sent inviting you to our in-person Volunteer Annual Meeting. This Annual Meeting will be our only in-person option for volunteers to catch up over breakfast, learn all the new and important information for the year, and see our Lawrence County Teen Leaders in action! Come ready to receive your Club Packets with your roster templates, constitution & by-laws, & financial requirements; along with yearly Quality Assurance Assistant Instructor Training and livestock updates, Protecting Our Minors Annual Training, and some great resources to use in your club meetings – join us on February 3rd at 10:00am at the Open Door School in Coal Grove! 3. Volunteer Rescreening’s are due February 15th. Each volunteer needing to be rescreened for the 2023-2024 4-H Year should have received an email and a mailed letter giving you notice in November! We will be sending reminder emails in the next few days!
4. New Volunteers: Anyone interested in becoming a new volunteer or starting a new club for 2024; should visit:

Scholarships are due March 15th. Please note, the Senior Scholarship Application will be used to select $25o.00 4-H Committee Scholarships and to select the $750.00 Ohio Valley Bank Scholarship!
6. Quality Assurance: I know many of our livestock youth are eager to get their Quality Assurance trainings done for the year! If your club ops to have a 4-H volunteer trained as an Assistant Instructor, receiving QA through your club will remain an option this year. We will be offering a few other county-wide opportunities, details coming soon. We will also accept YQCA – Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (yqcaprogram.org). Test-Out remains an option too! Quality Assurance for Lawrence County participants is due May 1 and is required for all Livestock exhibitors.

• 4-H Shooting Sports Fun Shoot: Are you a 4-H member, 9 years or older, as of January 1, 2024 and interested in the 700 level shooting sports projects? Join our 4-H Shooting Sports Instructors this Sunday, November 5th at 2:00pm for a Fun Shoot at 1049 State Route 217, Kitts Hill.
• 4-H Teen Leader Applications Due: Last Call – any teen, 14 years or older, interested in joining the Lawrence County Teen Leaders, also known as the junior fairboard, must complete an application by November 1st. Hello! The news below was printed and shared in each Club’s Pre-Fair Check In Packet but we wanted to make sure it was posted where all could find it.

One piece of news, that was not in the orginal announcements posted below is the decision made to cancel the 2023 Speciality Goat Show scheduled for Sunday, July 9th. This was a tough decision but based on the EXTREMELY low exhibition registrations, the decision was made to cancel for 2023. We will be looking at options for 2024.

2023 Lawrence County Fair Announcements

The Lawrence County Fair will begin on Saturday, July 8^th and go through Saturday, July 15^th. This is an exciting time for our 4-H and FFA members and families.

We hope each of our members are working hard to complete their projects and preparing them for exhibition. This is very important time to ensure you are checking out the 4-H Guidebook & the Livestock Exhibition Rules; these two documents help you to be aware of expectations, rules, and set you up for success.

Attached you will find the Lawrence County 4-H & FFA Fair Schedule with lots planned! Please note, we will now be utilizing the old food booth building for events originally planned for the 4-H Breezeway.

To kick off our week, we will be having a 4-H Horse Show on Friday, July 7^th at 6:00pm at LCHA.

Saturday, July 8^th:

• Our Beef, Sheep, Goats, Chickens, & Rabbits are required to be on the grounds between 8:00 – 10:00am for weigh in. All beef breeding, beef feeders, sheep breeding projects being housed on the grounds for the duration of the week must also report for check-in during this time. DUNF Form links will be provided the morning of – please be sure to complete while you wait in line to weigh in.
• We will also be hosting our Livestock Skillathon from 1:00 – 5:00pm inside the old 4-H Food Booth Building next to the grandstands. All market livestock exhibitors must complete skillathon to be eligible to show and sale. Bonus points will be given for completed project book.
• 4-H Club Beautification Projects – please note if your club is working on a club booth, a welcome display around the grounds, a flower pot, trash can, picnic table you can find the guidelines for judging inside the guidebook. These should be set up from 2:00 – 8:00pm on Saturday or 9:00 – 12:00pm on Sunday. Deadline to check in your club projects in Sunday at noon. Please note – it is your responsibility to care for any live plants during this time and also your responsibility to remove your displays by Saturday, July 15^th at 10:00pm.

Sunday, July 9^th

• Market Hogs must be on the grounds between 8:00 – 10:00am to be weighed in on Sunday. DUNF Form links will be provided the morning of – please be sure to complete while you wait in line to weigh in. Hogs will not be slap tattooed at time of weigh in, instead those consigned to the livestock sale will be slap tattooed by livestock committee members on Friday, immediately following drop slip load out.
• The 4-H Walking parade is scheduled for line up at 12:30pm to begin at 1:00pm. Please be sure our office has received your club script absolutely no later than noon on Sunday, to ensure we can share it as you walk in front of the grandstands.
• Shooting Sports Project Judging – please note, the slight time change, 700 level projects (especially archery) please report for judging at 3:30pm. Safe Use of Guns and Basic Archery – please continue to report at the 4:00pm scheduled time.

Sunday – Thursday Livestock Exhibition & Show Announcements

• Again, be sure you are checking out the rules, check out the dress code, and plan to report to your shows at least 30 minutes prior to the start. In each of our market shows, the classes are placed top to bottom. Then, for the final drive to name our champions and top 10 placings; we pull all first places into the ring to name the champion. Once Grand Champion is selected we pull 2^nd place into the ring from that class, to name reserve, and we continue until a full top 10 placings is selected. So, please be sure to stay for the duration of your shows.
• Also, it is expected livestock exhibitors:
  • Provide clean, fresh water at least twice a day
  • Feed your animals twice a day
  • Keep your pen and aisle way clean. Always keeping the barn cleaner than you found it!
  • Ensure your animal is happy and healthy
  • Conduct yourself according to the 4-H Code of Conduct
  • Be kind and helpful to others
• The barns will close at midnight, there are no generators allowed, and all aisle ways must be clear of fans, corn hole boards, etc. at all times.

Wednesday – Thursday 4-H Project Judging Announcements

• All 4-H members planning to be judged should have reserved your time slot for project judging. But have no fear, if you forgot – you may still show up at project judging, however you will be worked around those that have an interview scheduled. Call our office to get added to the interview schedule.
• Check out our guide book for project judging expectations.
• Members will check in at the tent outside of the 4-H Expo Center the day of judging.
• Any 1^st place member whose project is eligible for State Fair, must register for State Fair by the Friday, 3:00pm, July 14^th if they are interested in going. After Friday at 3:00pm, state fair eligible projects will be open to any Top 3 exhibitor to sign up!

Thursday, July 13^th

• A couple fun announcements:
  • 11:00 – 2:00pm – rides will be open for 4-H members and pizza will be served. Members must have their arm bands on and their food ticket!
  • 2:00 – 5:00pm – Ohio 4-H is bringing the mobile design bus for our members to explore! This will take place of the 4-H Experience It Project Exploration listed on the schedule at the 4-H Shelter. Instead, come check out the Mobile Design Bus for STEM activities near the large animal barn.
  • Spice of Life 4-H Livestock Costume Contest, Thursday, July 13th at 5:30pm: 4-H Livestock Members – grab your 4-H & FFA livestock animal being exhibited at the junior fair & dress up for a costume contest! Spice of Life will be awarding the Top 3 Overall with cash prizes! Come join in on the fun – all species are welcome!
  • Lawrence County Farm Bureau will be sponsoring the Pee Wee Showmanship at 4:00pm. They are asking those interested in participating be signed up by 1:00pm on Wednesday. Visit the large animal barn announcement board for signups!
  • Immediately following the Old Timer Show, will be a barn dance and games, Producers Inc. has sponsored the event and we are excited to add some fun entertainment for our youth!

Friday, July 14^th

• Senior & Junior Showman of Showmen is scheduled for Friday morning. Junior and Senior Overall Showman winners for each market division are invited to participate. Guidelines can be found in the livestock rules.
• Our 4-H Project Silent Auction is scheduled for 1:00 – 2:30pm. All first place life skills projects, who have something handmade, created by the exhibitor, are welcome to put the item in the auction. Auction items must be in place by 12:30pm at the 4-H Expo Center.
• All members and volunteers are invited to the showcase at 3:00pm. Scholarship Winners, Style Show, Overall Winners, Skillathon Awards, Volunteer Recognition, and Senior Salute will happen during this time! We are asking each club to donate two dozen cookies to share at this event!

Saturday, July 15^th

• Our livestock sale is scheduled for 10:00am. Sale order is goats, hogs, steers, lambs, rabbits, chickens. All animals will sale in the large animal barn. Please have yourself and nimal presentable following the Junior Fair dress code. Also, please remember – exhibitors may only take one animal through the sale ring. All animals going through the sale ring are terminal. Exhibitors do have the option to drop their animal from the sale for private treaty or to take home. But all animals going through the sale ring are terminal. Please see the fair schedule for drop slip deadlines. Also, we encourage members to place Thank you signs above their stalls; first year members – welcome buyers and returning members thanking their 2022 buyers. If you need a list of your buyers, please contact our office! Reminder, checks will not be mailed until after buyers have paid and no earlier than August 4^th!

  • Food & Clothing Projects will be judged pre-fair, June 22nd, 4:30 – 7:30pm at Resurrection Hope United Methodist Church in Ironton. Did you miss the June 1 interview registration deadline? Call the Extension Office, 740-533-4322 to reserve your spot. We will also take walk-in’s day of, but you will be worked in around rsvp’s!
• Breeding Animal Identification Form: All exhibitors planning to take a breeding project, non-market animal, to the fair – must complete their ID Form. Forms are due by June 15 and can be found at:  Lawrence County Breeding ID Form

Lawrence County 4-H Dog Obedience Judging: Judging will take place this Thursday, June 15th at 6:30pm at the Lawrence County Courthouse Lawn.

Lawrence County Ohio Fair Pageants Applications are due June 16th! Applications are available on our App – under Junior Fair Information! Questions should be directed to Jessi Newman, Pageant Advisor.

Lawrence County 4-H Horse Clinic: The Horse Clinic has been rescheduled for June 23rd, at LCHA, 6:30pm – must be a registered Lawrence County 4-H Horse Member to participate!

• The Ohio 4-H Mobile Design Lab Bus will be visiting on Thursday, July 13th, 2:00 – 5:00pm with special activities for our youth interested in STEM! Please make plans to stop by!
• 4-H Free Ride & Lunch Day will be Thursday, July 13th from 11:00 – 2:00pm. 4-H members – plan ahead to join us on Thursday from 11:00 – 2:00pm! The Lawrence County Senior Fairboard has scheduled the rides to be open to 4-H members only! Also, Judge Christen Finley & Commissioner Mike Finley will be sponsoring a 4-H pizza party for members during this time! 4-H Ride & lunch passes will be distributed to 4-H Club Advisors at Pre-Fair Check-In. 4-H arm bands must be on to ride & receive lunch!

During the showcase we will be recognizing the style show, scholarship winners, overall project winners, volunteer years of service, skillathon awards, our 4-H seniors, present the Silent auction items! Volunteers: if you are being recognized this year for a special year of service – you will be receiving a personal invite in the mail this week!
• 4-H Cloverbud Events:
  • Sunday, July 9th – Cloverbud Rodeo & Barn Tour, Large Animal Barn at 1:00pm
  • Tuesday, July 11th – Cloverbud Show & Tell Parade & Interviews, Large Animal Barn at 1:00pm, Interviews at 2:00pm – Cloverbud’s bring a favorite item from home you want to share with others – this could be your favorite stuffed animal, something representing your favorite hobby, an activity or craft you did at a 4-H event, whatever you wish – be creative! However, no live animals are not permitted.
  • Thursday, July 13th – Cloverbud Carnival at the 4-H Shelter, 1:00pm
  • Cloverbud Corner – Inside the Breezeway we will have a Cloverbud Corner, if you would like to display a 1/2 sized poster or a small item representing something you learned or experienced during the 4-H year, you may do so in the 4-H Breezeway. Items will be collected immediately following the Cloverbud Interviews until 4:00pm. They will be displayed until Saturday, July 15th. Please pick up your items on Saturday if you wish to keep them!
• 4-H Club Pre-Fair Check-In: Tuesday, June 27th, 8:00 – 4:30pm. Advisors – please plan to stop by and pick up your passes! Rosters with meeting attendance must be turned in to receive passes. Members must have completed their 5 meeting requirement by July 1 to recieve their pass.
