The Honor of the American FFA Degree

By: Katelyn Deaton

On October 31, 2015, I officially accepted the American FFA Degree. All the hours of working on my SAE projects, in the community, in the classroom, and practicing for and competing in CDE’s all lead up to an incredibly surreal fifteen seconds on the national convention stage to receive my degree and the acquisition the prestigious American FFA Degree key that I will forever cherish. I am extremely blessed to have had all the opportunities that I had through being involved National FFA Organization to be able to achieve such a high honor. As an Agriscience Education major in the department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership, I hope to be able influence and assist many students in accomplishing their goals as well as also receiving the American FFA Degree just as my teacher, Mr. Joseph Slone did for me.

The Blue Corduroy Jacket

By: Logan Heiby
Coldwater, OH
Agriscience Education

Sophomore

Saying goodbye can be one of the hardest things to do in your life. Well, on October, 31st 2015 I said goodbye to being an FFA member and zipped up my blue corduroy jacket for the last time. October 31st was the day that I received my American FFA Degree. As I was waiting to go across the stage I sat in my chair and looked down at my jacket. I wanted to take in every detail about the jacket. The first thing I thought about were the places that I have been and the people I have met. This jacket gave me the chance to meet people from all over the nation. I have met many people through the FFA and created friendships that will last a lifetime.

I then looked at the right side of my jacket and in gold lettering I read my name along with the officer positions I held. I thought about my time as an officer and the impact I had on other members. I can only hope that I was able to be a great role model for the members of my chapter. There below my name hung three pins. I looked at the pins hanging on the outside and thought about the many pins that also hung on the inside of my jacket. Those pins were more than just decoration. Those pins reminded me of my time with the FFA and the skills I acquired over the last six years. I learned how to be a leader, how to be a team player, how to communicate with my peers, and I learned that my love for agriculture can open many doors for me.

Finally, it was time for me to walk across the stage with my degree in hand. I walked on stage waiting for my six seconds of fame. I walked over to the National FFA President and then I heard my name over the roar of screams coming from my chapter. I shook the National FFA President’s hand and a feeling of accomplishment and pride rushed over me. I finally received the highest honor in the FFA organization. After walking off stage I knew that I will always bleed blue and gold!

An Experience of a Lifetime – Ohio FFA Agriscience Education Intern

By: Christine Balint
Huron, Ohio
Agriscience Education

Sophomore

This past week was the last meeting I would have with my fellow interns at the Ohio FFA center in regards to our internship. We had come so far, from shy, ready for anything interns, to students who are better informed and excited to start their teaching careers in the classroom. My internship with the Ohio FFA was really eye opening and allowed me to participate in major activities related to my career field, as well as meet some important people in the Ag Ed industry. It’s crazy how fast these past eight months have gone by and it is bittersweet that my experience is over. I found a new side of me that I can continue to grow and shape into the best teacher I know I can be.

In March, Levi Myers, Alex Tuggle, Cece Utendorf, Justin Feltz, and Emily Burns all started our first day as the first Ohio FFA Ag Ed interns. We learned about lessons plans and how to speak professionally in front of groups (and in the future our students), and began discussions in relation to becoming a teacher. Our job had a high level of importance: to spread awareness across Ohio about the need for Ag Educators in Ohio, as well as the nation. The question was how were we going to do it. Tentative at first, we started brainstorming about our plan of action for the year. With the help of our trusty supervisors, we were off to a great start. Our first major event would be State FFA Convention here in Columbus and we would not only have our own booth, but also would be running the first Ohio FFA Fights Hunger. We had students write thank you cards to their advisors, and packed over 85,000 meals to be dispersed over Columbus. Our first major event was over and it was time to get ready for a busy summer.

Over the summer months, the interns attended Summer Ag Conference, which was one of the most amazing experiences to have been apart of as a pre-service teacher. It is with my hope that in the next couple of years that pre-service teachers can have an opportunity similar to mine. FFA camp, State Fair, county fairs and SAE visit shadowing, industry visits, and volunteer events were also apart of our schedule. When all of the interns returned to school, it was time to go back to the classroom and talk to Ohio FFA chapters about Ag Ed as a future career. This was one of the best parts of the internship because we were getting into the classroom and teaching in front of the students. The students were so responsive, respectful and had many questions for me about my mission as an intern and what to expect when they enter college. In these classrooms is where I thought; this is why I am going to become a teacher.

Not only did I make a difference in the lives of students, but also I made five new friends who share a passion for agriculture. As current students and future colleagues, I know that these five wonderful people will be great teachers here in the state of Ohio. I cannot express the amount of appreciation I have for the opportunities I have been given from this internship.

The applications for the 2016 Ohio FFA Agriscience Education Interns will be coming out early next year and interviews will begin near February. If anyone has any questions or concerns please feel free to contact any of us interns, or go to teachagohio.org to the contact us/more info section.

FFA provides community impact

By: Carley Snider
Agriscience Education
Junior

During my time as an FFA member and now as a Buckeye, one of the biggest values that has been instilled in me is service. At the 88th National FFA Convention, I volunteered in the National FFA Living to Serve Team’s “FFA Hunger Games” booth in the trade show to encourage current high school FFA members to embrace an opportunity to serve.

This booth informed students and teachers about the initiatives the National FFA has for FFA chapters that take efforts to fight hunger in local communities. These programs are the “FFA: Food For All Grant Program” and the “FFA Hunger Heroes Challenge.” These programs give chapters the opportunity to earn up to $2,500 to take action.

During the three days of the national convention trade show, I manned stations within the booth that rewarded students for partaking in an activity where they learned more about these initiatives. Designed like a “Hunger Games” arena, we had activities such as a Nerf archery range, a scavenger hunt, and an obstacle course.

I loved getting to know the Living to Serve team and the other volunteers throughout the week and discussing why we are each passionate about students taking action to end hunger in their local communities. I am excited to hear about what the next set of FFA chapters across the country that participate in these programs will do to impact their communities!

Last Does Not mean Over

By: Frances Nicol
Agriscience Education
Sohpmore

Over 3,000 FFA members across the nation received their American Degree this year, I among them. This represents just .5% of FFA members! I cannot begin to describe the feeling of accomplishment that I felt as I walked across the stage with degree in hand. That day included hundreds of “lasts”: last time I wear the blue jacket, last time I attend convention as a member, and the final honor an FFA member can receive. However, last does not mean over. In fact, the American Degree is just the beginning. I can take a step forward to my career and the rest of my life. As a future Agriscience Educator, I will get to see many students follow the same path that I did and the best part is that I get to be a part of their success.

As I walked out of the convention hall and took off my jacket for the last time, I was overcome with memories that I will treasure and never forget. No matter where I go next, I know that FFA will always be a part of me and I am thankful for all the opportunities given to me through this fantastic organization. Even though I am no longer a member, I hope to always uphold the mission of the FFA member: “to practice brotherhood, honor agricultural opportunities and responsibilities, and develop those qualities of leadership which an FFA member should possess”.Frances Nicol, FFA Degree
