Scheer named interim chair of ACEL

Dr. Scott D. Scheer has been named as interim chair for the Department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership (ACEL) in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University effective September 1, 2019, through August 31, 2020,or until a new chair is appointed.

“As I assume this role I will  work with you to keep this amazing momentum going in ACEL for achieving our strategic plan goals and advancing ACEL in CFAES as a place of community, belonging, and thriving,” Scheer shared in an email to faculty and staff following the announcement.

Dr. Scheer is a professor in ACEL, and has been with Ohio State since 1996. He currently serves as Coordinating Advisor for the Community and Extension Education specialization in the Community Leadership major and Ohio State’s undergraduate minors of Community Outreach Education and Youth Development. He has also provided research and support for OSU Extension (4-H Youth Development) in the areas of Preadolescent Education and the 4-H Cloverbud Program.

Dr. Scheer’s research focus is in the areas of outreach education and youth development. He has secured externally funded grants from sources that include USDA–NIFA, Ohio Department of Mental Health, U.S. Department of Transportation, and the Ohio Office of Criminal Justice Services. Dr. Scheer publishes regularly in peer-reviewed journals and has been recognized with awards including a National Communicator Award, Distinguished Service Award, and Extension Outstanding Teaching Award. He has degrees from the University of Delaware (Ph.D.–Family Studies, Youth focus); Columbia University, Teachers College (M.A.–Developmental Psychology); and Louisiana Tech University (B.S.).

Experience OSU for a Day Hosts & Autumn Semester Schedules Needed!
Do you enjoy sharing your passion for Ohio State with others? Would you be willing to show high school students what it is like to be a Buckeye? The “Experience OSU for a Day” (EOFD) Program allows prospective students to get a feel for what college is really like. These students visit CFAES frequently, and we are in need of volunteers to show these students around campus when they come to visit. If you were a host last semester, we need your new schedule!

EOFD Hosts volunteer to have prospective high school students shadow them from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. for 1-2 weekdays each semester. Hosting is very flexible and can be adjusted to fit your schedule. Hosts are encouraged to take their shadow(s) to class, the Oval, the Union, a room in Nosker House, and to eat lunch at Parker Dairy Store (lunch is free for the host and shadow). Hosting is open to any CFAES student who has completed at least one semester of classes at the Columbus campus. To sign up, simply fill out this form and email it to Katie Share atshare.9@osu.edu. We have an excellent opportunity for the right person.  We seek an individual with expertise in agricultural education, education studies and experience in agricultural leadership.  This is a 9-month appointment with responsibilities for teaching/advising, scholarship, and service. The successful applicant will provide leadership and instruction for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences’ (CALS) Learning and Leadership Sciences (LLS) Minor in collaboration with other faculty members in AgEdS, Agron and other departments CALS, as well as personnel in the Center of Excellence in Learning and Teaching. In addition, the successful candidate will lead faculty development efforts associated with Project LEA/RN focused on improving instructional practice among faculty members and learning outcomes for students across ISU.  He/she will develop an applied research program to complement these areas and address application of learning theory in college classrooms.

This is a renewable term (3 year) faculty position and is titled – Assistant Teaching Professor.

Panama: Through the Lens of AgriCulture, Sustainability and Diversity (May 2020)
This course is designed to give students a different perspective on agriculture and other economic sectors that influence food, fiber, and fuel. Students will also have the opportunity to explore culture outside of the classroom and view, first-hand, food and production based on varying available natural resources, socioeconomic status and needs of the region and/or country.

South Africa: Exotic Animal Behavior and Welfare (Two Sections: May – June, 2020)
This May program takes students on a safari through parks and refuges where they study wild animal behavior and welfare by observing animals in their native habitat.

Ohio FFA Foundation to host Professional Development event for Pre-Service Teachers
The Ohio FFA Foundation will be hosting the second Pre-Service Teacher Professional Development event at the Ohio FFA Center on September 9, 5:00-8:00pm. The dress for the evening is business casual and appetizers will be provided. Attendees will receive a magnetic name tag and other giveaway. Like the first event in January, this evening will be free of charge thanks to the support of Ohio Corn & Wheat.

This professional development event will provide an opportunity for your students to connect with their peers from other postsecondary institutions, polish their resumes and hear from a panel of current ag educators. Students should have their resumes ready to upload at time of registration. Their resumes will be reviewed by industry professionals and each student will receive personalized feedback.

The event registration deadline is August 20, 2019. However, this event has limited seating and registration will close early if the event reaches maximum capacity before August 20. Students interested in attending the event should register here.
