FFA turned a shy teen to a public speaking faculty member

By Dr. Emily Buck
Professor
The Ohio State University

If anyone had looked at me when I was 12 they never would have thought I would be standing in front of people teaching everyday.

I was a shy sheep girl who kept to herself. My agriculture teacher changed all of that!

I will never forget my first state FFA convention on Ohio State’s campus. The mass of blue jackets walking around High Street, sitting in the auditorium watching as the state officers shared their retiring address and kids win awards for their dedication to agriculture. My ag teacher turned to my friend and I and said, “that will be you.” At that moment I knew I was going to be involved.

Three years later as I prepared to graduate from high school I had another memorable state convention. I can’t tell you which I am more proud of: receiving the state degree, winning the state sheep proficiency, or being elected state treasurer.

The FFA had set me up to be successful in all I did from there on out. Because of that I strive every year to help or give back to the organization that gave me so much. I was in 4-H and loved it, but FFA is what made me who I am.

The nights at FFA camp raiding the kitchen as a state officer, dancing on stage at opening session of “my” state convention, to the long drives to national convention in Kansas City, they all had an impact on me.

Buck was elected as State Treasurer for the Ohio FFA Association.

CFAES Outstanding Seniors of 2004 and 2005; Where are they now?

Each year the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences recognizes 20 outstanding seniors at the annual recognition program. Join us in taking a look back of the outstanding seniors from our department over the past few years.

2004

In 2004, the Department of Human and Community Resource Development (now called Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership) had seven seniors recognized by the College.

Take a look at where their careers have taken them after their time at The Ohio State University.

Katy (Poth) Endsley

Majoring in both agricultural communication and Spanish, Endsley graduated in 2004 with her bachelor’s degree. Following her graduation from Ohio State, she earned her Master’s of Education, Policy and Management from Harvard University. Endsley is currently located in Fairfield County, Ohio as the Program Manager for Ohio, FFA.

Kelsey Hall

Kelsey Hall majored in agricultural communication while a student at Ohio State. She is now located in Logan, Utah as an assistant professor of agricultural communications at Utah State University. She is also directing an undergraduate program in agricultural communication and journalism, with the advising of the Agricultural Communication Club. Hall is conducting research with both graduate and undergraduate students.

Hall, Kelsey

Other students recognized as Outstanding Seniors in 2004 include:

Melissa Kapp, Agricultural Education

2005

In 2005, the Department of Human and Community Resource Development (now called Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership) had seven seniors recognized by the College.

Take a look at where their careers have taken them after their time at The Ohio State University.

Lucy (Bowen) Bambauer
Lucy Bambauer graduated with her bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Education. She is now employed as the Agricultural Education Instructor at St. Mary’s Memorial High School, in St. Mary’s, Ohio.

Leslie (Risch) Cooksey
Majoring in Agricultural and Extension Education, Leslie Cooksey earned her bachelor’s degree in 2005. Later, she earned her master’s degree in 2012. She is now in Stoutsville, Ohio, employed as the 4-H Youth Development Extension Educator in Fairfield County (OSU Extension). As a word of advice for students, Cooksey says, “It’s a small world – especially in agriculture! I continue to witness that every day. I continue to remind my older 4-H youth about this in our meetings, programs, and events. Recently, when planning our 4-H Advisor Recognition Banquet with regard to our current 4-H theme ‘4-H Is an Open Door,’ I came across this quote: ‘Every man walks his own path, and every path has its fair share of locked doors. You never know who holds the key to a door you’ll need to open one day, so you best treat people as if they are all key-holders (A. J. Darkholme).’ Wow is that true! It’s a great reference to remind others that in everything they do and everyone they meet, you never know who might help connect them to future opportunities. And we are all about opportunities in the 4-H program!”

Adam A. Marx

He is now located in Lake Park, Minnesota and works as an Assistant Professor of Agricultural Education at North Dakota State University. Marx says, “Still a proud alum of the CFAES Top 20 Senior group! Last year, two of the teams I cheer for won national championships in football. At NDSU, I’m bringing the Scarlet and Gray to the Green and Gold of Bison Nation.”

It looks like a 100% chance of an internship

Written by: Brooke Rieke Schanowski
Winfield, Illinois
Agricultural Communication
Senior

“Today we’re experiencing another beautiful day. Mostly sunny skies, with a light breeze coming from the southwest. Later in the week, we may see some possibilities for rain showers. Other than that, take advantage of this warm October weather.”

Brooke Rieke Schanowski (internship, photo 4)

I was so fortunate to have an internship at NBC4-Columbus with their weather department. When I was in eighth grade, we did a 3-week weather unit. Ever since then, I’ve been hooked. That’s why it is so important to have an internship that fulfills my specific interest. I was so excited when Jym Ganahl, NBC4 Chief Meteorologist, emailed me back telling me I could intern with them in the fall.

A typical day at my internship consisted of first and foremost looking at the various weather models. We were always fascinated at studying the GFS-Model. For those of you who don’t know a lot about weather, the GFS-Model basically shows the trends of fronts and jets streams across the nation. Although some of the data shows patterns that are too early to tell, we always like seeing if these patterns will stay true.

Brooke Rieke Schanowski (internship, photo 1)

After studying the weather trends, we would go into creating the graphics with this data. As you see with your local weatherman, behind him is a variety of graphics that help give a visual representation to what the weather is like outside. At some stations, they will have a weather producer who is in charge of these. However, most stations have their meteorologists creating the graphics themselves. I was especially able to help out with the graphics during Beat Xichigan week.

One of the best parts of this internship was being able to go out with Jym for High School Friday Night Football. Every Friday, Jym and Jerod Smalley, the lead sports anchor, host a tailgate at a different high school. The students get behind it and show off their school pride. There’s free Cane’s chicken fingers and a great Columbus DJ playing the latest hits. It was interesting how different the dynamic was when the anchors had to give a report on the field rather than in the studio.

With this internship, it has made me excited to start my future career in this field. By learning from intelligent individuals, such as Jym Ganahl and Dave Mazzza (another NBC4 meteorologist), I have learned so much that I will be able to apply when I’m on-air.

Thanks for a great experience Jym and Dave!

Summer’s heat or winter’s cold, the seasons pass the years will roll, time and change will surely show, how firm thy INTERNSHIP.
