Ambassador Info Session
Are you interested in applying to be an Ambassador for the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES)? To learn more about what the CFAES ambassador team is all about, attend an information session, which will be held at 5:20pm on Wednesday, January 24 in room 247 of the Agricultural Administration Building. This is an optional activity to learn more about the application and interview process. We will have current ambassadors in attendance to share what their experiences have been. Feel free to attend if you are considering submitting an application for the ambassador team. We hope to see you there!

I-Corps @ Ohio State Application Opportunity
I-Corps@Ohio is an Ohio statewide program developed to assist faculty, staff, and students(undergrad, grad, & post docs) in validating the market potential of technologies and launching startup companies. I-Corps@Ohio is modeled after the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) successful I-Corps (Innovation Corps) program, which has been proven to increase innovation, entrepreneurship, and industry collaboration.

I will mentor you through the application process and the workshop series next summer.  See the information below. Precision Ag Review
Precision Ag Reviews is a project funded by Ohio Soybean Council and GIS Heartland. Currently there is no resource for farmers to compare precision ag equipment other than the salesman’s word. We are a non-profit and a bias third party. The premise is “Farmers Helping Farmers.” Precision Ag Reviews shows comparisons between products and new upcoming products. Check out precisionagreviews.com and create a review in less than 5 minutes to help farmers in your community make informed decisions. By completing a survey, you are entered into a raffle weekly to win a $100 gift card.

National Land-Grant Diversity Conference
The Conference is hosted by five land-grant universities from Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio. It is designed for administrators, faculty, and staff from Cooperative Extension, research, and academic programs; private and public university representatives; K-12 educators; community outreach leaders; health and social services professionals; employers and supervisors; human resource staff; elected and appointed officials; and all others wanting to expand diversity efforts and increase cultural understanding in their communities and workplaces.For additional information click here.

Collegiate Ohio Agri-Women Information
Collegiate Agri-Women is a soon to be chartered organization that is focused on women’s role in the agricultural industry and their impact on agricultural policy. Collegiate Ohio Agri-Women is directly linked to Ohio Agri-Women a professional and social organization of women in agriculture. Both of these organizations are affiliates of American Agri-Women, a national organization and the largest coalition of women in agriculture. The Collegiate chapter at Ohio State is looking to help college women interested in agriculture network with women currently in the industry. In addition, we are looking to educate our members on agricultural issues, while providing a communication link to the general public and legislators. Collegiate Ohio Agri-Women is also looking to help educate young people in schools and communities nearby.

Meetings will formally begin after winter break; be on the look-out for posters with more information. Any current student wishing to be considered for a college scholarship for 2018-2019 must complete the online college scholarship application between November 1, 2017 to February 15, 2018 in order to be considered. Current students receiving scholarships from CFAES must reapply to be eligible. Selection will be conducted spring semester. Generally, the criteria for these scholarships include a declared major in the college.  Those who are selected to receive a College and/or Department scholarship will be notified via mail in June 2018. The Exploration of Modern Farming internship supported through a collaborative grant involving  OSU, Wilmington College, Central State University, Battelle, Grow Next Gen, and Ohio Soybean Council will include a minimum of 40 hours (includes 8 hours of training) during the months of April through September 2018, in which the intern will be expected to educate people of all ages in one-to-one and/or in larger groups at a variety of events. The intern  will be trained on how to educate the public in informal and formal settings including, but not limited to: county or state fairs, ag days for elementary school students, or classroom presentations.

A training is a required and will take place on February 16–17 at FFA Camp Muskingum, beginning at 6 pm on Friday, February 16 and ending at 4 pm on Saturday, February 17. All lodging and food is free to the intern during this training. Mileage is not included.

Intern training will include ‘how to present’ the following activities (minimum):

  • GMOs and how they are engineered
  • biodiesel and its performance
  • NDVI and the principles of light and how they are used to help farmers (flying a paper airplane drone)
  • programming and computational thinking using Makeblock
  • other outreach activities such as: soy ink, soybean seed necklaces, soy bioplastic, etc.

Ohio Collegiate Agri-Women Student Organization
A new student organization at Ohio State and within CFAES will be having a meeting November 28th at 7 pm in 164 Howlett Hall. This is the chapter’s second meeting, with opportunities to become involved.

Farm Bill Conversation Presentation
On November 28 at 6:30 pm in 164 Howlett Hall, Collegiate Farm Bureau will have John Torres of Ohio Corn and Wheat on campus to discuss the upcoming farm bill, how it affects us, and fielding any questions you may have.

Student Council Presents Food and Fellowship with Faculty
Formerly known as Donuts with the Dean, Food and Fellowship with Faculty is an event put on by the CFAES Student Council to help connect students with the dean and faculty members and to take time to get to know others within the college. Please take a quick study break to come out to meet new people, grab some free breakfast, and connect with our faculty and deans on Tuesday, December 5 from 7:30am-10am in Kottman Hall Lobby. If you have any questions seek a council representative, or email Monica Pennewitt (.2) or Amy Wilber (.37).

Calling all aspiring farmers!
The Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association (OEFFA) is coordinating a Begin Farming Apprenticeship Program that has openings for  apprentices to work on certified organic vegetable farms in Ohio for the 2018 growing season. The Begin Farming Apprenticeship Program is an educational program for aspiring farmers to gain hands-on experience and skills necessary to begin a career in organic agriculture. Ideal candidates will have a strong commitment and desire to beginning a start-up farming operation of their own.

Apprentices will gain on-farm experience in the daily production practices of a mixed vegetable operation. In addition to this paid position, apprentices will attend off-farm educational workshops, participate in skill-sharing on host farms, tour exemplary farms, and connect with other apprentices and early career farmers through networking opportunities.

MACA Young Leader Scholarship Program
The Mid-America CropLife Association is pleased to announce the continuation of the Young Leader Scholarship Program (YLSP) for the sixth year as we believe it benefits students who have an interest in agriculture. MACA is an association made up of basic manufacturers, distributors/formulators and allied industry from the crop protection industry.
Benefits for the students:
·         Networking and interaction with professionals in the agriculture field.
·         A monetary scholarship.
·         Participation in the MACA Annual Meeting in Des Moines, Iowa in September.

Ohio Soybean Council Graduate Scholarships
Three scholarships of up to $5,000 each are available to graduate students who are enrolled as a full-time student at an Ohio college or university and have proof of legal residency in the United States.

Applicants must be conducting research in bioproducts, biobased materials, biotechnology, bioengineering, biopolymers or a related field, and focused on advancing the soybean industry.

The deadline for undergraduate and graduate applications is Jan. 12, 2018.

All OSCF scholarships will be competitively awarded with funds paid directly to the educational institution. Scholarships are not renewable, although recipients may reapply. For more information and to download the scholarship applications, visit the Ohio Soybean Council Foundation at www.soyohio.org/scholarship.

Scholarships

2018-2019 Ohio Soybean Council undergraduate scholarships
Six undergraduate scholarships of up to $3,000 each will be awarded. In addition, one $3,000 FLM Harvest Excellence in Communications Scholarship, which was founded to provide resources to young people with a passion for agricultural and business communication will be awarded. Also available to one undergraduate student is a $3,000 Robinson W. Joslin Scholarship, which was established to recognize a student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership potential. Lastly, one undergraduate student is eligible for a $5,000 Bhima Vijayendran Scholarship, named to honor Dr. Vijayendran’s contributions to the soybean industry through his scientific research and commercialization activities at Battelle. This scholarship was founded to support those pursuing a degree related to science, technology or soybean research.

Eligible majors include biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, molecular biology, chemistry, engineering, biotechnology, bioenergy, biofuels, food science, crop science, environmental science, agricultural communications, agricultural business, agricultural education or any of the agricultural disciplines or related fields.

Apply for Student Sustainability Scholarship Funding
The Office of Energy and Environment is now accepting applications for student sustainability scholarships. The deadline to apply is Nov. 19. Additional information, including the funding application and profiles of past scholarship recipients can be found at http://oee.osu.edu/student-funding/.

The scholarships are valued at $1,000 per award, and will be applied to 2018 Spring Semester tuition and fee expenses.

Wasted! The Story of Food Waste Movie Screening
The Undergraduate Student Government we will be showing this film November 9, with the doors opening for catered food from Alchemy at 6:30 PM, and the film starting at 7 PM. This event will be located in the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Building (CBEC) 131. It is the room directly next to the wall of lights, so it is visible when entering CBEC from the front.

We are having free food and giving away several items to students on a first come, first serve basis.

CFAES Undergraduate Research Forum Call for Abstracts
The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences is calling for abstracts for the CFAES Undergraduate Research Forum, scheduled for Thursday, March 1, 2018, from 1:00pm to 4:00pm, in the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center. The CFAES Undergraduate Research Forum provides a means for undergraduate students to share their research with members and friends of the OSU community; recognizes the significant contributions to research by OSU undergraduates; and facilitates exchange between students, faculty, and the public. Participation in this event will prepare students for the OSU Denman Undergraduate Research Forum on Tuesday, April 3, 2018. Students enrolled in any undergraduate degree program in CFAES and the School of Environment and Natural Resources are invited to participate, provided they have a CGPA ≥ 2.5 and are engaged in supervised research projects in the area of their major. If a research project is ongoing and will not be completed by March 1, a research-in-progress summary may be submitted in lieu of an abstract.

LifeSports Youth Leadership Academy
One component of this initiative, the LiFEsports Youth Leadership Academy (YLA), is a college and career readiness program which serves about 60 diverse, urban, high school Columbus youth each year. YLA goals are to assist youth in accessing and preparing for higher education. For the second year in a row, YLA juniors and seniors will be paired with college students or professionals to engage in college readiness activities (submitting applications, writing college essays, etc.). Research shows that quality mentoring relationships have positive personal, academic and professional influences on youth. More info here.

New CFAES Transcript Designation- The Global Option
CFAES has a new transcript designation available to recognize student efforts to internationalize their OSU experience. This new designation is called the Global Option (GO).

The CFAES GO has four basic components:
A: Education Abroad or International Student Status
B: Taking a course related to your major or minor (see list) that is international in nature
C: Advanced international learning: A second study abroad, or the second set of 3 credit hours for a program that awards 6+ hours, or participate in an international research project, internship or Service Learning experience, or minor in a program that is international in nature, or prove at least minor-level proficiency in a non-English language
D: Complete the Global Option Capstone course (FAES 4580) at some point after reaching rank 4 (exceptions allowed for special circumstances such as Agriscience Ed students who are not able to take any additional courses their final year) To learn more, see this website with additional details and the Global Option application: https://students.cfaes.ohio-state.edu/globaloption. Student Focus Groups for Recruitment
University Marketing is currently looking for students to participate in focus groups to discuss their experiences at and thoughts about Ohio State. Examples of questions they may ask include “What made you decided to attend Ohio State? What does it mean to be a student at Ohio State? What would you tell your younger family members or friends about Ohio State if they said they were interested in attending Ohio State?”
There will be two sessions available later this month, but you would need to sign up for just one. Participating students will receive a Starbucks gift card at the end of the focus group. Below you’ll find the details. To reserve a spot, fill out the following survey:
What: University Marketing focus groups
When: Tuesday, October 24 or Wednesday, October 25; 5:15-7 pm on both evenings
Where: Ohio Union, room to be confirmed
Misc: Casual dress, pizza and drinks to be provided

Scholarships

NCGA, BASF Accepting Applications for 2018 Ag Scholarships
The National Corn Growers Association is again offering its William C. Berg Academic Excellence in Agriculture Scholarship thanks to the sponsorship of BASF Corporation. Five $1,000 scholarships are available to college students (sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students and Ph.D. candidates) who are pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in an agricultural, agribusiness or an ag-vocation field.
The five scholarship winners will be announced at NCGA’s annual trade show and convention, Commodity Classic, which will be held on February 27 – March 1, 2018 in Anaheim, California. Applicants or a parent/guardian must be a member of NCGA. Funds are for the 2018-2019 school year.  Past scholarship winners, employees and the families of employees of any division of BASF or their subsidiaries or NCGA are not eligible for the scholarship. Students may apply for membership at NCGA.com.Applications must be postmarked on or before December 1, 2017. The application is available at: http://www.ncga.com/scholarships.

AGRCOMM 5194: Group Studies – Data Visualization & Scientific Storytelling in FAES
Looking for an elective to help improve your design and presentation skills? This fall, we’re offering AGRCOMM 5194: Group Studies – Data Visualization & Scientific Storytelling in FAES. In this class, you’ll learn how to use Adobe Creative Cloud software to produce visuals for research presentations, articles, and other reports. We’ll also cover how to talk to different types of audiences about science, agriculture, and research. The class is 2 credit hours and meets Fridays from 9 AM-12 PM. It’s open to graduate and undergraduate students, and it would be especially helpful to students conducting research. For AGRCOMM students, this course can count for major elective credit.
