4-H CARTEENS takes place at the Muskingum County Juvenile Court. Youth interested in becoming 4-H CARTEENS volunteer presenters should contact the Extension Office for details.

Junior Camp counselors and staff will meet at the Extension Office. Crafts Counselors will meet at 5:30 p.m.

Small Animal Fun Day – April 20, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Youth enrolled in (or interested in taking in the future) rabbit, poultry and goat projects are STRONGLY encouraged to attend this free clinic that will include species themed games, great educational opportunities and door prizes!

Horse Safety & Ethics Program – April 23, 6-7 p.m.

All first-time horse project participants are required to participate in the Horse Safety and Ethics Training Program with a parent/guardian before they are permitted to ride a horse at a 4-H activity or event. Both parent/guardian and youth must read 191R Horses, Safety and You prior to attending the program and bring the book with them to the program. See page 22 of the 2019 Muskingum County 4-H Family Handbook for details.

Camp Counselor Workshop at 4-H Camp Ohio – April 26-27

First-time Camp Counselors are required to attend.

Two overnight camps are happening this summer at the Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center. 4-H Camp Tech is from June 5-7 for youth entering grades 6, 7 and 8. You’ll explore all things tech-y from programming with Google to virtual reality to robotics and more! Details at http://go.osu.edu/CampTech.

And you can learn about life in another culture and learn about making a difference at 4-H Global AgriCULTURE Camp, from June 10-14. Youth entering grades 8, 9 and 10 will spend three days at OSU discovering how agriculture can impact global food issues, then travel to Howell, Michigan for an over experience at the Heifer Global Village. The 4-H Youth Development program in Muskingum County is led by a team of two Extension Educators involved directly with volunteer management and training. As a member of the team, this Extension Educator will provide co-leadership to a comprehensive positive youth development program while focusing educational programming on workforce preparedness, expanding the 4-H program beyond the traditional club model, and other topics identified as a county need for youth programming. Examples of programs include school programs, after-school programs, youth boards, volunteer orientation, and training specific to volunteer roles and responsibilities.

The 4-H Cloverbot Challenge is a statewide event designed just for our youngest 4-H members. Teams work together to research a topic, build a model out of interlocking bricks and create a poster highlighting their experience. On June 29, the teams will come together at the Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center to share their work, visit with one another, participate in kid-friendly activities, and celebrate their efforts with a closing celebration and award ceremony.

Teams may have a minimum of two members, but no more than eight, and are coached by an adult team leader. Details and registration information can be found at https://ohio4h.org/families/cloverbuds/cloverbot-challenge

• What: Ohio 4-H Event Youth Assistant (4HEYA)
• Who: Individuals age 13-18 (as of January 1 of the year of application) and have at least 1 year prior 4-H experience.
• Timeframe: Apply by May 15, selection, training, service to Ohio State Fair, and evaluation.  Complete responsibilities by August 31, 2019.

• Requirements (in addition to application/selection process):
  • Training-Must attend one of the options for training (July 9 or July 17)
  • Events-Must work a minimum of 3 events at the Ohio State Fair; may work more if desired
• Program Fee: $25/person for first year members; $10 for 2^nd or more year members
• Teens Receive:
  • 4HEYA Polo & Nametag
  • State Fair admission, parking ticket, and meal ticket(s)
  • Optional State Fair housing in the Rhodes Center (if desired)
  • Experience of working events at the Ohio State Fair
  • Opportunity to enhance leadership skills and be involved in the State 4-H program
• What about the Teen Leadership Council? YES, these members may apply for 4HEYA AND TLC this year, if desired.  TLC applications will be available in June and will be due the Friday following the Ohio State fair.  Their term is September 1, 2019-August 31, 2020.  Current TLC members are not eligible to apply for 4HEYA, as they are already fulfilling obligations at the Ohio State Fair.

Many of us, including myself, feel great affection toward 4-H Camp Ohio – home of some beloved memories. As we work hard to keep the camp relevant and appealing to our current clientele, we are examining our facilities to prioritize improvements and updates. As Board President, I would love to see our 4-H family in Muskingum County become engaged in these projects!

4-H Camp Ohio recently published its first Facilities Newsletter. This newsletter will be published several times a year so that we can share information about facility maintenance and upgrades at 4-H Camp Ohio. It will also provide information about possible volunteer and donation opportunities.

Attention high school students! Teens interested in agricultural careers don’t want to miss this amazing and FREE opportunity to spend a week on a college campus exploring the world of agricultural careers. The application to apply is March 30. Check out the four opportunities this summer at ExploreAg.org.

Club Organizational Volunteers should look for an e-mail shortly after the March 15 enrollment deadline in regards to schedule book order appointments. We are waiting until after the enrollment deadline to begin filling orders this year, because we plan to use the 4HOnline book order report feature to help us determine if we have enough books on our shelves to fill orders this spring. It is our hope to cut down on the number of volunteers (especially those who fill orders later in the cycle) who need to make more than one trip to pick up project books.

Right now, I have time scheduled the last week in March and the first two weeks of April to complete orders. Stay tuned for more information!
