Madison County 4-H Week – March 6-12 – Fuel your curiosity in 4-H!

Join us on social media while we celebrate Madison County 4-H Week!

  • Monday – comment your favorite 4-H project!
  • Tuesday – Post your favorite camp memory or photo!
  • Wednesday – Tag your favorite 4-H volunteer!
  • Thursday – Tag a 4-H alumni member to share their story of 4-H!
  • Friday – Talk about your favorite community service project
  • Saturday – Tag someone that should join 4-H!

The more participation = more entries to win a cool 4-H prize at the end of the week!

 

4-H Club Window Display Contest

Clubs have the opportunity to locate a local business and decorate their window/space for 4-H week! You can find details on the contest here. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

4-H Online Enrollment – March 15

You are now available to enroll your family for 2022! Visit oh.4honline.com and log in your same email and password that you used before. If you forgot your password/email, contact our office – DO NOT create a new account unless you are a NEW family to 4-H!

Looking for a new/fresh project for this year? You can view sample pages of project books, see comments from families that have enrolled in the project, etc. at www.projectcentral.ohio4h.org! You can can visit go.osu.edu/mc4hspark where you will find videos from key leaders, livestock committee members, and other volunteers describing various project areas, what you need, what you learn, etc. There will also be videos from our own 4-H members that have done really well in certain project areas sharing their insight!

Livestock Quality Assurance

To be eligible for participation in the Madison County Junior Fair, potential youth exhibitors must participate in one of the following Quality Assurance Education Programs. The deadline to complete QA Education for the Madison County Fair is May 15, 2022. Parent participation is required for exhibitors under 16 or first year exhibitors.

4-H & FFA Members in these projects must attend Quality Assurance Education:  All Dairy Cattle, Market & Dairy Goats, Breeding Goats, Market & Breeding Rabbits, Beef (Mkt. Steers, Beef Feeders, Breeding Beef), Dairy Feeder Calves, Market and Breeding Swine, Breeding and Market Sheep, all Market and Fancy poultry. Horses, Dogs, Alpacas, Cats, Cavies, and Pet Rabbits do not need to complete QA training.

Session options are listed below. Mark your calendar to attend ONE! Sign ups are available NOW at www.go.osu.edu/MadCoQA

  • March 21, 6:30-8:30 – Della Selsor Building
  • March 31st, 6:00-8:00pm – Tolles Tech (Hosted by ASE Feeds – RSVP through their website)
  • *April 18, 6:00-8:00pm – Becks Hybrids (Rabbit Project Specific)
  • *April 20th, 6:30-8:30pm – Becks Hybrids (For NEW MEMBERS ONLY – 1st-3rd year members just getting started on their projects!)
  • April 28th, 7:00-8:30pm – Virtually via Zoom
  • May 5th, 7:00-8:30pm – Virtually via Zoom
  • May 12th, 6:30-8:30pm – Coughlin Building

If you cannot attend the above dates, there are options for an online QA through YQCA. Contact the extension office for details. It does cost roughly $12 to complete. You can also reach out to surrounding counties to complete this.

We provide this calendar so that you can plan ahead. RARELY are big dates changed so that you can plan around family vacations, sporting events, etc. Please make these a priority as a lot of planning and volunteer time goes into these events. Make up options and extensions are few and far between for required things when we sent the schedule out several months in advance 🙂

Dog Project Info Clinic – March 7 at 7pm – Della Selsor Building

Interested in taking a dog project this year through 4-H? Attend the Dog Informational Clinic! There will be live demonstrations for Showmanship, Obedience and Rally Obedience. Contact Jenny Sweet, Dog Program Leader, 740-506-3357 or Sweets43140@att.net for any questions you may have.

 

 

 

 

 

 

2022 Family Guide Available NOW!

The 2022 Family Guide is now available for download at ohio4h.org/familyguide! All families and volunteer enrolled last year will be receiving a paper copy via mail. We will have some available in the office as well, first come first serve.

You can view sample pages of project books, see comments from families that have enrolled in the project, etc. at projectcentral.ohio4h.org!

Now is the PERFECT time to browse the 4-H projects available for next year! Contact our office with any questions about projects, purchasing books, etc.!

Officer Training Resources: Visit https://ohio4h.org/officerresources for some brand new officer training resources! We were excited to add these new resources under the “Officer Resources” tab. These resources are quick guides that offer information on the importance of campaigning for club offices, officer position descriptions, and tips for holding elections.

County Level Scholarship Opportunities

  • Madison County Farm Bureau Scholarship-March31
    • The Madison County Farm Bureau is offering scholarships to the children of Madison County Farm Bureau members. While all students are encouraged to apply, preference is given to applicants majoring in an agriculturally-related field

    • The completed application is due March 31, 2022 to Madison County Farm Bureau, P.O. Box 368, Hilliard, Ohio 43026 OR emailed as a PDF to madison@ofbf.org
  • Madison County 4-H Scholarship – April 30th
    •  The Madison County 4-H Advisory Committee sponsors two -$500.00 and four-  $250.00 scholarships.  Applicants must be currently enrolled in the Madison County 4-H program and must be high school seniors or college freshman.
    • This scholarship application is due April 30th to the Extension Office or emailed to foos.61@osu.edu

  • 4-H Trip Scholarships
    • There are many opportunities available to youth outside of our county programs! The Madison County 4-H Committee sponsors trips for our youth to help them gain leadership skills and represent our county! Trips include: State Leadership Camp, Shooting Sports camps, Citizenship Washington Focus (trip to D.C.), and many more
    • Applications ASAP for early registrations (CWF, Buckeye Leadership Workshop, etc.) or 6 weeks in advance of registration for event.

2022 Madison County Fair Schedule Posted!

The 2022 Madison County Fair schedule is posted at https://www.madisoncountyfairoh.com/fair-schedule.

Please review as there are some changes to check in and removal times for animals!

Livestock Committee Members Needed!

We want YOU to consider joining the Small Animal or Large animal committees, or Horse Committee!  This is a great opportunity to get involved to help make the Jr. Fair programs great!

Contact the Jr. Fair Coordinator at madisoncountyjfb@gmail.com to get on the mailing list for meeting dates.

The 3 Committees are:

  • Equine Committee (has been in place for several years, If interested, contact Colleen Martin at stephighatlfs@aol.com for information on meetings times, dates, etc.)
  • Small Animal/Specialty: includes rabbit, poultry, dog, alpaca, and small animal
  • Large Animal Committee: Includes beef, dairy, swine, goat, and sheep!

Responsibilities of these committees will include:

  • Species specific rule recommendations to JFB (timely and accurate oversight and revisions)
  • Judge recommendations
  • Develop and maintain volunteers
  • Fundraising/Budget
  • Fair format/show bill/arena and facility set up
  • Assist extension office with skillathons

Ohio 4-H Conference – Great opportunity for Volunteers and Teens! – March 12, 2022

Ohio 4-H Conference is a full day conference at the Columbus Convention Center on Saturday, March 12 that offer sessions that directly relate to bettering your 4-H club experience leadership skills, etc..

Open to 4-H members and volunteers age 13 and up.

Registrations are due to our office by February 9! We have 8 adult and 4 teen spots sponsored by the 4-H Endowment fund!

Shooting Sports Information Meeting

Join shooting sports instructors on February 17th at 6:30pm at the Extension Office to learn about all of the shooting sports projects, what is required, benefits of it, and more!

No RSVP required – just come by between 6:30-8:00pm to get your questions answered!

Volunteer Trainings: All club volunteers need to complete 2 trainings for 2021 4-H year. Attend 1 mandatory 4-H Volunteer training, plus the Club Update or opportunity at the county, district, or state level or a non-4-H training that relates to your work as a volunteer. This is a new requirement from the state level. Watch your emails for more information on topics, registration, etc. You can find information and register for a session at go.osu.edu/madcovolunteertraining. 

*Policy 1.50 Child Abuse and Awareness training will be offered online on a “do at your own pace” course

4-H Rally Night – January 26

Come learn what 4-H is all about! Meet with project leaders, clubs, and youth to find your spark in 4-H. There will be refreshments as well as door prizes for project books, 4-H camp gift certificates, and more!

Invite your friends and family for an evening of fun!

*If your club would like to have a booth, please contact foos.61@osu.edu  by January 14th. If you would like to represent your project area at a booth, let us know!

While enrollment is not due until March 15 for 2022 4-H year, enrollment is OPEN! If you want to get a head start on your projects, update your email, mailing address, etc., now is the time!

Trip Scholarships – Due December 1 or ASAP

What: For any youth in 4-H to submit to attend 4-H related trips or opportunities, such as statewide camps, 4-H conference, CWF and LWF, and more! Trips are funded by the county 4-H committee or endowment funds, either partial or fully funded depending on the opportunity and cost.

Deadline: Due December 1 OR with proper notice before the event to allow time to committee review and registration (6 weeks before registration is due)

CLUB/VOLUNTEER UPDATES

Volunteer Trainings: All club volunteers need to complete 2 trainings for 2021 4-H year. Attend 1 mandatory 4-H Volunteer training, plus the Club Update or opportunity at the county, district, or state level or a non-4-H training that relates to your work as a volunteer. This is a new requirement from the state level. Watch your emails for more information on topics, registration, etc. You can find information and register for a session at go.osu.edu/madcovolunteertraining. 

*Policy 1.50 Child Abuse and Awareness training will be offered online on a “do at your own pace” course

Dates to hold:

  • January 12, 10-11:30am and 7-8:30pm (Virtual)
  • CLUB UPDATE: January 31st, 10am (In-Person) or 7pm (Virtual) – Required for all volunteers to attend live or watch recording

4-H Club Update Event – January 31 –  There will be a 10:00-11:30am time and a 7:oo-8:30pm timeslot. This will cover any updates for 4-H for the year (calendars, policies, new events, fair updates, etc.) so that the volunteer trainings can focus on more educational and applicable topics that will help you as volunteers. We will require at least 2 representatives from each club to attend and recommend that everyone attends OR watches the recording afterwards. This will count as a training opportunity for volunteers as well.

Yearly Financial Summary due January 31 – All clubs are required to turn in their end of year financial statement, found at https://ohio4h.org/volunteers/volunteers/club-leaders/finances/clubaffiliate-yearly-financial-summary. These are required to be turned into our office by January 31st so we can file 990N forms. If we do not receive by the 31st, your club will be put on probation for the year and may affect your club status for future years.

Club Achievement Packets: Make sure you are picking up your club achievement packets at the extension office! We still have SEVERAL waiting to be picked up!

Background Checks: If you are up for a background check this year, you will receive notice in the next couple of weeks or so via mail and/or email. Please get that done sooner rather than later!

Beef Tag In Information and State Fair Update

Beef Exhibitors! Save the date for Saturday, January 15, 2022 for the mandatory tag in for those planning to show beef at the Madison County Fair.  Hoof trimming will also be available. Watch for more information to be coming soon on sign ups.

If you are planning to show beef at the state fair in 2022: All market beef exhibitors MUST pick up and return a DNA Sample kit and EID tag. All beef must have the EID tag to exhibit at the state fair. The DNA sample kits are due back to the Ohio State Fair by January 15, 2022 (received, NOT postmarked).

You may pick up your EID tag and DNA sample kit from the OSU Extension Office during normal hours (Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:00pm). You may choose to mail it to Ohio State Fair on your own, OR you can return to the Extension Office by January 7 and we will mail it for you. Complete instructions are listed in the kit for how to collect and send back.

Livestock Committee Members Needed!

We want YOU to consider joining the Small Animal or Large animal committees, or Horse Committee!  This is a great opportunity to get involved to help make the Jr. Fair programs great!

The 3 Committees are:

4-H Silent Auction – November 29-December 5

Need some holiday gifts?

The Madison County 4-H Committee is hosting a Virtual Silent Auction this week! The site is open to bids NOW and closes this Sunday, December 5 at 1pm (during the 4-H banquet).

All items can be viewed and bids submitted at go.osu.edu/mc4hsilentauction. Anyone can bid (over 18), so share with your friends, family, and neighbors!

Items are anything from a gift baskets, toy trucks, decor, things to do, handmade items – there is something for everyone! Special thanks to all the local businesses and people that donated items!

To make a bid, click on the item you wish to bid on, which will take you to a form which you can submit your information and your bid. Click the link to a shared Google Spreadsheet to view the most current bid BEFORE submitting your bid.

Bid HIGH and bid OFTEN! All proceeds benefit the Madison County 4-H Program.

4-H Online Enrollment-March15

While enrollment is not due until March 15 for 2022 4-H year, enrollment is OPEN! If you want to get a head start on your projects, update your email, mailing address, etc., now is the time!

You can log into your 4-H Online profile at oh.4honline.com using the email and password you used to enroll in 4-H (and possibly fair entry). If you recently moved or changed your email, please make that correction so you can continue to receive information in a timely manner!

2022 Family Guide Available NOW!

The 2022 Family Guide is now available for download at ohio4h.org/familyguide! All families and volunteer enrolled last year will be receiving a paper copy via mail. We will have some available in the office as well, first come first serve.

You can view sample pages of project books, see comments from families that have enrolled in the project, etc. at projectcentral.ohio4h.org!

Now is the PERFECT time to browse the 4-H projects available for next year! Contact our office with any questions about projects, purchasing books, etc.!

Achievement Awards for Project Areas

These awards recognize achievements in specific 4-H project areas.

Areas include: Beef, CARTEENS, Citizenship & Community Service, Creative Arts, Clothing & Textiles, Communications, Companion Animals, Dairy, Environmental Sciences, Family Life & Child Development, Foods & Nutrition, Gardening & Horticulture, Health & Safety, Horse, Leadership, Goats, Llama Mechanical Engineering Sciences, Personal Development, Photography, Poultry, Rabbits, Sheep, Shooting Sports, Swine, Woodworking, and Veterinary Science.

Award recipients receive a trip to National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Georgia. Complete the Ohio 4-H Achievement Record (must follow guidelines listed on the application regarding font and formatting). Applicants must be at least 14 years old and currently enrolled in 4-H.

This application is also required for those interested in Ohio State Junior Fair Board and the Township Association scholarship.

4-H Recognition Banquet – December 5

Attention 4-H volunteers, club advisors, teen leaders, Junior Fair Board members, camp counselors, member honor award winners, cloverbuds, and special guests! Please join us for our annual recognition banquet, sponsored by the Madison County 4-H Advisory Committee, as a way to say thanks for “sticking with it” this year and your hard work and dedication to the Madison County 4-H program!

Join us on Sunday, December 5, 2021 at the Della Selsor Building, Madison County Fairgrounds. Arrival begins at 12:30pm and lunch is served at 1:00pm. Awards will begin promptly at 1:30pm.

Registration is due Monday, November 22, 2021. Please only RSVP once you know everyone that is attending from your party!

Please RSVP online at www.go.osu.edu/mc4hbanquet by Monday, November 22. All invited and honored guests can attend free of charge. Additional guest can attend at $15 ($10 for children 10 and under) and must also RSVP. Checks for guests can be made payable to: Madison County 4-H Committee and are due by November 22.

The Madison County 4-H Committee will be hosting a Virtual Silent Auction the week leading up to our recognition banquet, November 29-December 5. More information on how to bid and items available will be coming later this month! Anyone can bid online thorough the week, and there will be a chance to bid in-person at the beginning of the recognition banquet!

If your club, family, business, organization, etc would like to donate an item for the silent auction, please contact Frances Foos or any 4-H Committee member at foos.61@osu.edu or 740-852-0975. We need a quality photo of the item, short description, and estimated value by Friday, November 19! Items can be dropped off to the Extension Office anytime before December 3 at 4:00pm.

4-H Camp Counselor Applications – Due November 5

Applications are due November 5 and are available at www.go.osu.edu/madco4hcampcounselor. Contact the Extension Office if you have questions!

We are in need of several counselors! More counselors = more kids we can take to camp! We especially need MALE counselors! 20 counselors is our goal!

You do not have to have gone to camp before to be a counselor – just need to like kids! Counselors meet around 8-10 times a year starting in January and plan the entire camp week in June!

Please share and encourage your high school members to apply (must be 14 by January 1, 2022 to apply – mature 8th graders are also welcome!). You do not have to be in 4-H currently to apply – camp counselors can take camp counseling as their project for the year!

You may pick up your EID tag and DNA sample kit from the OSU Extension Office during normal hours (Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:00pm). You may choose to mail it to Ohio State Fair on your own, OR you can return to the Extension Office by January 7 and we will mail it for you. Complete instructions are listed in the kit for how to collect and send back.

Livestock Committee Members Needed!

We want YOU to consider joining the Small Animal or Large animal committees, or Horse Committee!  This is a great opportunity to get involved to help make the Jr. Fair programs great!

Contact the Jr. Fair Coordinator at madisoncountyjfb@gmail.com to get on the mailing list for meeting dates.

The 3 Committees are:

  • Equine Committee (has been in place for several years, If interested, contact Colleen Martin at stephighatlfs@aol.com for information on meetings times, dates, etc.)
  • Small Animal/Specialty: includes rabbit, poultry, dog, alpaca, and small animal
  • Large Animal Committee: Includes beef, dairy, swine, goat, and sheep!

Responsibilities of these committees will include:

  • Species specific rule recommendations to JFB (timely and accurate oversight and revisions)
  • Judge recommendations
  • Develop and maintain volunteers
  • Fundraising/Budget
  • Fair format/show bill/arena and facility set up, recs
  • Assist extension office with skillathons

2022 4-H Calendar Available NOW!

Please mark down important dates with your families NOW! (Rally Night, Judging days, SKILLATHON, etc.) – Livestock Quality Assurance dates will be added by January

    • January 26 – Rally Night
    • March 15 – 4-H Enrollment deadline
    • May 1 – Animal Ownership deadline
    • June 1 – Jr. Fair Entries due
    • June 4-8 – 4-H Camp
    • June 21 and 29 – Livestock Skillathons (REQUIRED TO ATTEND ONE, NO EXCEPTIONS!)
    • July 9-16 – Madison County Fair (pending ODA approval)

We provide this calendar so that you can plan ahead. RARELY are big dates changed so that you can plan around family vacations, sporting events, etc. Please make these a priority as a lot of planning and volunteer time goes into these events. Make up options and extensions are few and far between for required things when we sent the schedule out several months in advance 🙂

JFB is open to all high school 4-H/FFA members – not just for those enrolled in livestock projects! We need all project areas represented and all clubs! Our goal this year is to have at least one from each club apply!

JFB members meet about 5-7 times a year and plan various Jr. Fair activities, select awards, organize and work the livestock shows and misc. events, etc.

4-H Camp Counselor Applications – Due November 5

Applications are due November 5 and are available at www.go.osu.edu/madco4hcampcounselor. Contact the Extension Office if you have questions!

We are in need of several counselors! More counselors = more kids we can take to camp! We especially need MALE counselors! 20 counselors is our goal!

You do not have to have gone to camp before to be a counselor – just need to like kids! Counselors meet around 8-10 times a year starting in January and plan the entire camp week in June!

Please share and encourage your high school members to apply (must be 14 by January 1, 2022 to apply – mature 8th graders are also welcome!). You do not have to be in 4-H currently to apply – camp counselors can take camp counseling as their project for the year!

4-H Trick or Treat – October 24

Join us October 24 from 5:00-8:00pm at the Madison County Fairgrounds for some fun trick or treating, costume contest, games, activities, and free food and drinks, plus a haunted hayride! EVERYONE is invited to come!

*CLOVERBUD OPTION: At 4:30pm, right before the event starts, there will be a special activity for Cloverbuds (5-8 years) to make and take PUMPKIN SLIME! No pre-registration required – just show up and have fun!

Costume contest will being at 6pm. There are prizes! The categories are:

  • Infant to 4 years
  • 5-8 years
  • 9-11 years
  • 12-14 years
  • 15-18 years
  • Group/Adult

*If your club or organization would like to have a table to pass out candy, please contact our office by October 20th!

Jr. Fair Sale Check Info

  • All sales checks from the Junior Fair livestock sale have been mailed out. If you do not receive your check by October 5, please email madisoncountysalescommittee@gmail.com or call 614-778-9318.
  • Don’t forget to thank you buyers and boosts! Attached is a list of all buyers and addresses in alphabetical order, and it is also available here. Be sure to send thorough and thoughtful thank you notes (at least 3 sentences thanking them, an example of how you plan to use the funds – future plans, projects, etc.)

4-H Online Records

While enrollment is not due until March 15 for 2022 4-H year, it is a good idea to double check your profile now and make sure you are still getting emails, that your email and mailing address is correct, etc.

You can log into your 4-H Online profile at oh.4honline.com using the email and password you used to enroll in 4-H (and possibly fair entry). If you recently moved or changed your email, please make that correction so you can continue to receive information in a timely manner!

Trip Scholarships – Due December 1 or ASAP

What: For any youth in 4-H to submit to attend 4-H related trips or opportunities, such as statewide camps, 4-H conference, CWF and LWF, and more! Trips are funded by the county 4-H committee or endowment funds, either partial or fully funded depending on the opportunity and cost.

Deadline: Due December 1 OR with proper notice before the event to allow time to committee review and registration (6 weeks before registration is due)

Application: Can be found at www.go.osu.edu/madcoteenopportunities  and are turned into the Extension Office or emailed to foos.61@osu.edu

The following opportunities must have a trip scholarship filled out: Carving New Ideas, State Shooting Sports Camp, State Leadership Camp, Ohio 4-H Conference, Buckeye Leadership Workshop, Citizenship Washington Focus, Leadership Washington Focus, Sea Camp, and any other paid/selection type opportunity.

Carving New Ideas

Check out this great opportunity for 4-Hers grades 8-12! Carving New Ideas is a camping opportunity for older youth, concentrating on the principles of critical thinking and program facilitation. It is hosted by Collegiate 4-H at The Ohio State University and the college students, who are also 4-H alumni, are prepared all of the fun activities for the weekend of October 29-31.

Member Shout Outs!

Teen Leadership Council – Congrats to Luke Peart for being selected to serve on the Ohio 4-H Teen Leadership Council for the 2021-22 term year! As a member, he will learn leadership skills, meet others teens from across the state, meet with supporters and donors of Ohio 4-H, and provide guidance to the 4-H program, as well as work some state level events!

Congrats to Amara Suchy for being selected to attend the Cultural Immersion Experience trip to Puerto Rico this winter!

Congrats to all of our Ohio State Fair participants! We had several winners in the livestock area, skillathons, and non-livestock judging! Way to represent Madison County well!

 

Youth Leadership Summit & Glo Paint Party – September 11

Madison County Prevention (MCP) will be holding the second annual Youth Leadership Summit on September 11th at the Madison County Fairgrounds!

This event is free to students, grades 9-12, in Madison County!  Madison County Youth Ambassadors (YA) have been actively planning for this event, which includes community service and leadership training, fun and games, FREE PIZZA, and a GLO PAINT PARTY!

Do you know any youth that are interested in taking over the family farm, starting their own farm, or owning their own business in the agriscience industry? Check out this attached flyer about attending Agricultural Entrepreneurship Camp on the weekend of September 24-26. Open to all youth that are in high school. Teen Leadership Council Applications Available!

Applications and more information to be an Ohio 4-H Teen Leadership Council (TLC) member for the 2021-22 program year are now available online at: go.osu.edu/TLC. Please note: applications (and other materials, including letters of recommendation and program fees) are due (received, not postmarked!) by Friday, August 13, 2021.

The Ohio 4-H Teen Leadership Council (TLC) is a statewide group of 4-H teens and young 4-H alumni that provides a youth stakeholder perspective in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Ohio 4-H programming. In this process, council members develop knowledge, skills, attitudes, and aspirations needed for future success.  Council members share advice and recommendations to 4-H professionals in order to improve, strengthen, and expand the Ohio 4-H program.  Members also make recommendations regarding opportunities for Ohio 4-H teen programming. They serve as a sounding board for Ohio 4-H program direction.

July 2021 4-H News

July is here and it is time for the fair! I am so excited to see all the hard work of our youth come together. As we go into the prime time of summer heat and fun, I challenge you all to remember how grateful we are to have a time and place that our youth can exhibit their projects and enjoy the experience. I like to remember the 4-H pledge during busy times: head to clearer thinking, heart to greater loyalty, hands to larger service, and health to better living. Let’s use our minds to think clearly and be good role models for those around us, help out our friends and family, help serve those that are in need, and maybe try to not eat fair food for every meal? (Okay, ice cream doesn’t count!).

In all seriousness, let’s have a great fair week and best of luck to all of our exhibitors!

Be sure to review and print out the following to be best prepared for fair week:

As a reminder, the fair is put on by all volunteers and as such, there will be mistakes because we are human! Please remember to go into the fair week with a kind heart and good sportsmanship and above all, ENJOY the time together as our youth complete their projects they have worked so hard on all year long!

*Emails: Be sure to check your emails frequently this coming week as well as social media for the fair and OSU Extension as this is the main way we communicate any changes or information you need to know!

Swine Check in Information: All exhibitors should have received an email with the swine check in times and information. You can also find the info at: https://madison.osu.edu/program-areas/4-h-youth-development/swine-projects

Sheep and Goat Check In: Sheep and Goats will have to sign up for a check in time on Saturday at this link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080b4fadad2da5f85-sheep1 (has been sent via email to all sheep/goat exhibitors). Please sign up for ONE slot per FAMILY, NOT per animal.

Special Interest Awards will be annouced on Tuesday, July 13 at 7pm. Nutrition and Clothing Awards will be annouced after the Style Review on Wednesday, July 14 at 7pm.

SPECIAL INTEREST AUCTION – New in 2021!

This year, all youth exhibiting a special interest project that are NOT selling a livestock animal in the Jr. Fair sale have the option to auction off an item related to your special interest project! The form below must be turned in at the time of judging check in on July 10th and has the additional rules listed.

Special Interest Auction Entry Form and Rules

  • When: Thursday, July 15 at 5:00pm (check in at 4:15 with item and get photo taken)
  • Where: Della Selsor Building
  • How: Turn in Auction Entry Form at Project Judging on July 10th
  • Item must be 60% homemade, raised, or in some way created by the exhibitor and must be related to your project. You may only enter 1 item per exhibitor.

This is a great oppportunity to invite your family and friends too, and reach out to your small businesses that would love to sponsor a project! If you know someone interested in supporting, share this flyer with them!

Miscellaneous Fair Contests

  • Thank Your Buyer poster contest – Sponsored by the Jr. Fair Sales Committee
    • Posters can be turned into the JFB office by 8pm on July 10th . List your name, species, and club on the backside. Posters will all be displayed in the Eby Arena
    • Poster cannot be larger than 11x18inches and must clearly list the previous year’s buyer and thank them for their support.
    • Each livestock category will have 1 winner chosen. Winners are announed on Tuesday evening at the Special Interest Awards ceremony. Cash prizes are given

  • Cake Decorating Contest – Wednesday, July 14
    • Compete in your different age divisions listed below:
      • Adult/Senior Division (Age 15+) – 11:00am
      • Intermediate Division (Ages 12-14) – 11:45am
      • Junior Division (Ages 8-11) – 12:45pm
      • Cloverbud Division (Ages 5-8) – 2:00pm
    • All cake rounds and icing and tips are provided (Special thanks to Vallery Farmhouse Bakery for donating the icing!)
    • Participants are timed (Seniors = 30 min, Intermediates = 45 min, Beginners & Cloverbuds=60 minutes)
    • Placing awards are given from a qualified judge (Cloverbuds receive participation ribbon)

Cloverbud Participation at the Fair!

  • Cloverbud Show & Tell – July 12 @ 7pm in the Della Selsor Building: Each club takes the stage for members to share about the project that they made and what they enjoyed about 4-H! Club advisors register 30 minutes prior to the event
  • Cloverbud Passport to the Madison County Fair – July 14 @ 10:30: Sponsored by the Madison County Farm Bureau, any youth ages 5-8 can attend for a tour of the fairgrounds to meet the animals, enjoy games and crafts, and a special prize! Arrive at the Della at 10:30 to participate on July 14
  • Cloverbud Cake Decorating – July 14 @2pm: Test out your cake decorating skills! All youth are given a cake form and icing to decorate a cake with and to display the remainder of fair week.

Cloverbot Challenge

In honor of the Mars Rover, this year Cloverbuds will be going to space with the challenge happening on Mars. Cloverbuds will design a place to live on the Red Planet and create a model featuring their method of transportation. The Challenge will take place virtually on Monday, July 12 or Thursday, July 22 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. We will be utilizing breakout rooms in ZOOM so that teams will have the opportunity to share their projects. With help from the Ohio 4-H Foundation, teams can order a kit to get them started. Information is posted on the Ohio 4-H website https://ohio4h.org/families/cloverbuds/cloverbot-challenge and via Facebook.

Teen Leadership Council Applications Available!

Applications and more information to be an Ohio 4-H Teen Leadership Council (TLC) member for the 2021-22 program year are now available online at: go.osu.edu/TLC. Please note: applications (and other materials, including letters of recommendation and program fees) are due (received, not postmarked!) by Friday, August 13, 2021.

The Ohio 4-H Teen Leadership Council (TLC) is a statewide group of 4-H teens and young 4-H alumni that provides a youth stakeholder perspective in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Ohio 4-H programming. In this process, council members develop knowledge, skills, attitudes, and aspirations needed for future success.  Council members share advice and recommendations to 4-H professionals in order to improve, strengthen, and expand the Ohio 4-H program.  Members also make recommendations regarding opportunities for Ohio 4-H teen programming. They serve as a sounding board for Ohio 4-H program direction.

Ohio 4-H Summer Shooting Sports Education Clinics

Ohio 4-H Shooting Sports is offering 4 days of shooting education clinics to youth interested in expanding their skill set in a specific area at Canter Cave 4-H Camp in Jackson, Ohio. You do NOT have to be enrolled in a shooting sports project to attend! Register in advance at go.osu.edu/SSclinics by July 9 as space is limited!

Contact our office to ask about potential funding to cover the $30/day/participant fee!

Dates are:

  • Sunday, July 18: Beginner Clinics
  • Monday, July 19: Adult/Youth Day
  • Tuesday, July 20: Intermediate/Introduction to Advanced skills
  • Wednesday, July 21: Advanced Skills

Livestock Skillathon Registration and Info

Skillathon takes place on June 19th, 2021.  Livestock Skillathons are required for the following projects in order to exhibit at the county fair: Beef, Dairy, Alpaca, Dog, Equine, Goat, Sheep, Poultry, Rabbit, and Swine Projects.

All youth must register for a time slot by June 9th at www.go.osu.edu/madcoskillathon

If you need a specific accomodation or have questions, contact the Extension Office at 740-852-0975. Alternative dates should have been scheduled by June 1 for those that have conflicts.

OSU Extension Office Hours & Updates

General Office Hours: Our office is open Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:00pm for normal office hours. It is still recommended that you call ahead if you need something specific or need to speak with a specific staff member.

Welcome our new office associate, Jackie Buss! If you see her in the office or chat with her on the phone, say hi and welcome her!

County Level Scholarship Opportunities

In-Person 4-H Meetings and Events Update -NEW UPDATE

Remember to follow our meeting guidelines for any in-person 4-H meetings and events that you may be attending: That information, along with any new updates, is at https://ohio4h.org/families/stay-connected.

    1. Face masks are not required to be worn inside or outside at 4-H camp (day or overnight) for ALL employees AND clientele
    2. Face masks are not required to be worn inside or outside at any OSU Extension (including 4-H non-camp) programs and activities for ALL employees AND clientele
    3. Face masks are not required to be worn inside or outside at county offices for ALL employees AND clientele.
      • Face masks are strongly recommended for those who are not yet fully vaccinated (strongly recommended means the individual chooses to wear a mask or not)
    4. All other health and safety guidance is still in effect, such as physical distancing and sanitizing. Local guidance or building requirements prevails if there are more stringent requirements
    5. Individuals and/or family members may not attend if they or anyone living their household is experiencing any of the following symptoms: fever, cough, shortness of breath, loss of sense of taste or smell, or as been directly exposed (confirmed or suspected) to COVID-19 if they are not fully vaccinated.
    6. COVID-19 vaccinations are our best current protection against infection and a fatal outcome. Fully vaccinated individuals are not required to wear a face mask, however we strongly recommend eligible, but unvaccinated, individuals to continue to properly wear a face mask when social distancing cannot be maintained.
    7. As a reminder: Know that these guidelines may be modified at any time if conditions change and/or guidance is not following, and/or local health department issues more stringent requirements

Jr. Fair Royalty and Ambassador Applications

Apply now to be Fair Royalty or Specie Ambassador! Applications are due June 15, with a required meeting for all contestants June 15 at 6:00pm in the Della Selsor Building.

Outstanding Exhibitor and Scholarship Applications Due June 15

Applications for outstanding specie exhibitors and various scholarship are due June 15. See below for the opportunities and applications:

Poultry –  Pollorum Testing (Note – NOT for market broilers or waterfowl)

Pullorum Testing – Saturday, June 12th at 12pm

Where: Poultry barn @ Madison County Fairgrounds

Why: An A/I & Pullorum Clean test is required for entry to the fair. If you purchased from a hatchery since last fair you can get a verification from the hatchery. If you have chickens older than last fair (2020) or purchased from a private breeder you MUST get your birds (a %) tested.

If you can’t make the June 12 date, reach out to Julia for a list of testers.  If you don’t have a “disease- free- hatchery paper” or a clean- test paper you will NOT show at the fair. Waterfowl is not tested.

Equine Clinic Dates

The following are the Equine Clinic Dates:

  • 6/6 @ 10AM for Western and Trail (Showmanship, Pleasure, Ranch, Contesting)
  • 6/12 @ 10 AM  for Hunters and English Flat work (Hunter under saddle and equitation)
  • 6/26 @ 10 AM for Saddleseat and Dressage

  • Those exhibiting at OSF and want to be eligible for Outstanding Breeding Exhibitor (OBE) awards MUST participate in the VIRTUAL skillathons online
