COUNTY UPDATES


Livestock Skillathon – Sign Up by June 15 & Study Guides!

Skillathon takes place on June 21st and 29th. Families will sign up for times for youth needing to complete skillathon. Livestock Skillathons are required for the following projects in order to exhibit at the county fair: Beef, Dairy, Alpaca, Dog, Equine, Goat, Sheep, Poultry, Rabbit, and Swine Projects.

**VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Parents, advisors, community members, alumni are all welcome to assist with skillathons! The more volunteers, the smoother each evening can run! Please call the Extension Office at 740-852-0975 or email foos.61@osu.edu if you are interested. Food will be offered to volunteers both evenings!


4-H Demonstration Day!

Join us for the 4-H Demonstration Day on Wednesday, June 15, starting at 10am to practice your public speaking skills and get a chance to compete for cash and awards, and represent Madison County at the State Fair Communication Day!

Classes:

  • 1. Junior: ages 8-10, no computer technology permitted
  • 2. Junior teams: ages 8-10, no computer technology permitted
  • 3. Intermediate: ages 11-13, with/without computer technology
  • 4. Intermediate teams: 11-13, with/without computer technology
  • 5. Senior: ages 14 and up, with/without computer technology
  • 6. Senior teams: ages 14 and up, with/without computer technology
  • Cloverbud: ages 5-8 pledge or demonstration
  • Cloverbudteam: ages 5-8 pledge or demonstration

Awards:

  • Overall in Each Class:
    • 1st Prize $50 and trophy
    • 2nd Prize $40
    • 3rd Prize $20
  • Cloverbudswill be awarded for participation
  • 1st place winners will be selected to represent Madison County at The Ohio State Fair Communication Day. Classes 1-6 will go to the State Fair on Thursday, August 4. Some State rules are different than Madison County rules.

Animal Specific Information

Emails were sent to all families in early April will all details pertaining to your animal project. See below for a link to view that email message. Please review for details of what is required of your project!

Project Books – Purchase the 4-H Project Record Book for your species/project and the Resource Handbook if applicable (available in our office for purchase or online at www.extensionpubs.osu.edu) (Livestock projects must purchase the 4-H project book for their first year)

  • 2nd year livestock and beyond: (not equine, alpaca, dogs, or small animals) – utilize project book AND add record via the printable Livestock Project Record Book (will be checked for skillathon). You can print at home or pick up from our office for FREE

Special Interest Auction

All youth exhibiting a special interest project that are NOT selling a livestock animal in the Jr. Fair sale have the option to auction off an item related to your special interest project! The form below must be turned in at the time of judging check in and has the additional rules listed.

Special Interest Auction Entry Form and Rules

  • When: Thursday, July 14, 2022 at 5:00pm (check in at 4:15 with item and get photo taken)
  • Where: Della Selsor Building
  • How: Turn in Auction Entry Form at Project Judging
  • Item must be 60% homemade, raised, or in some way created by the exhibitor and must be related to your project. You may only enter 1 item per exhibitor.

This is a great oppportunity to invite your family and friends too, and reach out to your small businesses that would love to sponsor a project!

Outstanding Exhibitor Applications (All due June 15)

These are a great way to be recognized for your hardwork in your species! Fill out the form and turn into the Extension Office by June 15!

Represent the Madison County Fair in your species or department or as royalty! Applications are due June 15. Follow the link above for more details on requirements and dates and deadlines!

COUNTY JR. FAIR UPDATES


Poultry –  Pollorum Testing (Note – NOT for market broilers or waterfowl)

Pullorum Testing – Sunday, June 12th at 1-3pm

Where: Poultry barn @ Madison County Fairgrounds

Why: An A/I & Pullorum Clean test is required for entry to the fair. If you purchased from a hatchery since last fair you can get a verification from the hatchery. If you have chickens older than last fair (2021) or purchased from a private breeder you MUST get your birds (a %) tested.

If you can’t make the June 12 date, reach out to Julia for a list of testers.  If you don’t have a “disease- free- hatchery paper” or a clean- test paper you will NOT show at the fair. Waterfowl is not tested.

Now more than ever it’s time for 4-H’ers to make the best better! While youth are at home and staying safe, we still want you to stay connected. Below are links to activities for youth and resources for volunteers. Check back frequently for additional links and program updates!

 


Ohio 4-H Capital Day – register for High School 4-H Members!

What is Ohio 4-H Capital Day?: This one-day event will give current high school students an opportunity to will join discussions covering current issues youth face, learn about advocacy, gain an understanding of the legislative process, and have the opportunity to meet with individuals involved with State Government.

When is Ohio 4-H Capital Day?: Join us in Columbus, our state capital, on Wednesday, June 15! Programming will begin at 9:00 AM and the day will conclude by 5:00 PM.

What is included in registration?: The day will include programming hosted at the Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center, followed by a visit to the Ohio Statehouse, including a tour! Transportation for students will be provided from the 4-H Center to the Statehouse and back. Lunch will be provided to all attendees.

How can I register?: Registration is open through June 6! The cost is $10.00 to attend, which can be paid via credit card or by check – see these details in the online registration. Visit go.osu.edu/4Hcapital to get signed up!

Ohio 4-H Shooting Sports Camps

Don’t miss out – registrations for the 2022 Ohio 4-H Junior (July 15-17) and Senior (July 24-29) Shooting Sports Education Camps help at Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp are due June 15th!

Ohio Youth Skillathon Information

Ohio Youth Skillathon information for VIRTUAL and IN-PERSON sessions is now online at: https://ohio4h.org/animalsciences/ohio-youth-skillathons

VIRTUAL Skillathon Registration is due by JUNE 14th, 2021!

A few important notes:

  • Those exhibiting at OSF and want to be eligible for Outstanding Market Exhibitor (OME) awards MUST participate at the IN-PERSON skillathons at the state fair
  • Those exhibiting at OSF and want to be eligible for Outstanding Breeding Exhibitor (OBE) awards MUST participate in the VIRTUAL skillathons online
