June 1st is “Junior Fair Entry Day”, here is a list of forms and project registrations due by June 1.
The Equine Ambassador Application Deadline is approaching quickly, on June 1st. The Equine Ambassador Program is open to male and females that are completing 7th grade to 4-H age 17 who are currently enrolled in Adams County 4-H or FFA doing a live equine project. For more rules and the application go to Horse Program | Adams (osu.edu). Completed applications and essays are due to the Extension Office by 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday June 1st.
There will be up to three ambassadors selected. Ambassadors are selected based on applicants’ essays, applications, a modified obstacle course with rail work, and interview scores.
Some duties of the Equine Ambassadors are representing the Adams County Horse Program for one year from the selection date, participate in the Adams County Fair parade on opening day, help at horse shows, represent the Equine Program at horse camp, horse safety and ethics, and other programs.
So be sure to apply before June 1st to have the chance to become a Equine Ambassador
The Fur and Feathers Ambassador Application Deadline is coming up quite soon, on June 1st. Fur and Feather Ambassador Program is open to male and females that are completing 7th grade to 4-H age 17 who are currently enrolled in Adams County 4-H or FFA doing poultry or rabbit projects. For more rules and the application go to Livestock Projects | Adams (osu.edu). Completed applications and essays are due to the Extension Office by 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday June 1st.
There will be up to two Ambassador selected for the 2022 Adams County Fair. They will be the Fur and Feather Ambassador from July 1st, 2022, to June 30th, 2023. Skillathons are THIS WEEK on Thursday, May 26 and Friday, May 27 from 3-7pm at the Adams County Fairground in the Administration Building. Pre-Registration is NOT required.
Skillathons are required for 4-H members and optional for FFA members. It is mandatory to complete Skillathon to show at fair for all species including equine projects. Skillathon will also earn points for Outstanding Exhibitor.
The best resources to study are your livestock resource and record books. Another way to study for Skillathon is from our friends in Wayne County, who have created online practice tests at https://wayne.osu.edu/skillathon-study-materials..
Makeups for Skillathon will be scheduled on an individual base. If you cannot attend the scheduled dates on May 26 or May 27, please contact the office at 937-544-2339. Make up skillathons are not eligible for awards but do meet the criteria to be eligible to show at the 2022 Adams County Junior Fair.
Adams County Junior Fair members completing a food and nutrition or related project are eligible to enter the Junior Fair Bake Off. New for 2022, more than one member from a club may enter into a category as long as they meet the age and project requirements. Members must use the recipes provided. Grand and reserve champion baked goods in each category will be required to sell in the Junior Fair Sale on Friday evening of the fair.
Baked goods will be submitted on Thursday, July 14 at 3 p.m. in the Senior Fair Administration Building. Judging will begin promptly at 3:30 p.m. Awards will be announced that evening at 5:30 p.m. in the Administration Building.

Rules
1. The Junior Fair Baking Contest is open to current members of any Junior Fair organization or club that
have completed a food and nutrition or related project.
2. Participants may only be registered in one category and may represent only one Junior Fair
organization or club.
3. Each organization or club must submit entries by 4:00 p.m. on June 1st to the Extension office.
4. Each participant will: a) Bring the baked item they have prepared themselves according to the recipe
provided by the Junior Fair Board. b) Be required to take a written food preparation and nutrition test
when entering the baked item. c) Submit their baked item in a sealed container. NO EXCEPTIONS or
you will not be allowed to register.
5. All baked goods must be registered between 3:00-3:30 p.m. Judging will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Senior
Fair Administration Building.
6. Scoring will be as follows: a) Quality of baked item – 60%. b) Nutrition test – 40%.
7. If a participant earns less than 50% on the written food preparation and nutrition test, the baked good
will not be eligible for placing or for the sale. Any participant who has difficulty reading should notify the
contest chair(s) at time of registration so assistance can be provided.
8. Classes will be divided into Junior (8-12 years of age) and Senior (13 years of age and older). All ages
as of January 1st of the current year.
9. Junior categories: Quick Bread, Cookies, and Basic Cake
10. Senior categories: Yeast Bread, Pie, and Specialty Cake
11. Awards will be presented at 5:30 p.m. in the Senior Fair Administration Building.
12. The awards given will be: Grand Champion – Rosette, Reserve Champion – Rosette, 3rd through 5th
places – Rosettes. Each participant will receive a participation ribbon.
13. Grand and Reserve Champion must sell in the Small Animal and Baked Goods Sale. The baker must
be present to sell and follow the Junior Fair Dress Code. NOTE: Grand and Reserve Champion winners
will not be eligible to sell any additional units in any Jr Fair Sale unless those units were also designated
as qualifying champions in their respective shows.
14. If, for some reason, the Grand or Reserve Champion is disqualified, no replacement will be selected
from that division for the sale.
15. Entries not placing must be picked up by 5:30 p.m. on Thursday
Members enrolled in a poultry or rabbit project now have an additional opportunity to showcase their project knowledge. New for 2022, the Adams County Junior Fair will hold an educational Poster Contest for rabbit and poultry exhibitors. Posters will be submitted during fair check-in Sunday, July 10. Poster will be judged prior to the rabbit show on Monday and displayed for the duration of the fair. Winners will receive cash awards sponsored by the 4-H Small Animal Committee.

Adams County Junior Fair is calling on all member ages 16-18 to apply for the Adams County Junior Fair Queen & King Contest. Individuals interested must be an active member of a Junior Fair Organization such as: 4-H, FFA, FCCLA, Scouts, or SkillsUSA. Applications are available on the website (adams.osu.edu) or by visiting the Extension Office.
Applicants will participate in an interview on June 30. After the interview participates will be called back to participate in a public onstage event. Following the onstage interview, the top five candidates for Queen and King will be announced in no particular order. These candidates will ride in the fair’s opening day parade. At the conclusion of the parade the top 5 candidates for Queen & King will participate in an onstage interview and the King and Queen will be crowned.
You may wonder why you should apply for fair Queen or King. If selected as the Adams County Junior Fair Queen or King, you will hold one of the highest honors a junior fair participant is able to hold. You will participate in an experience not many before you have done and for years to come you will be remembered as the 2022 Adams County Junior Fair Queen or King. During the fair you will serve as a role model to those around you, especially younger junior fair members who want to be just like you when they grow up. After fair you will continue to serve as this role model and go on to do many things during your reign. As Queen or King, you are encouraged to branch out and visit other fairs to see what junior fairs do differently and represent the Adams County Fair. You will make memories and connections for a lifetime.

Adams County 4-H members automatically receive a $20 camp scholarship courtesy of the Adams County Advisory Committee and funded by our annual candy sales. This year every camper that registers will receive a 2022 Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp t-shirt!
If you would like to bunk with another camper, please reach out to them ahead of registering to coordinate. You will be choosing cabins using the online registration. Payment is due to the Extension office by the registration deadline to secure your camper’s place at camp. Cloverbud Camp payments will be collected through the Jackson County Extension Office.

Chick and duck pickup has moved up one day! We are using a different hatchery this year and they hatch one day earlier. Please plan to be at the Adams County Fairgrounds on Wednesday, May 25 from 4-5 p.m. to pick up your poultry. Birds will be boxed and ready for handout.
Horse camp registration is here! Equine members, register now for the multi-county horse clinic to be held Friday, June 10 and Saturday, June 11 at the Adams County Fairgrounds. Horses and members will check in the evening of June 9 and participate in a full day of education and fun on Friday and Saturday. Saturday evening and Sunday members will have an opportunity to show off what they’ve learned in the annual multi-county fun show.
