Meet Our Graduate Students: Cora Carter

Motivated, ambitious, goal-oriented, and driven to make a difference are a few of the ways to describe graduate student Cora Carter. From a small town in Southern Indiana, Cora majored in pre-veterinary medicine at Purdue University as a fourth generation Boilermaker. Once admitted into the prestigious College of Veterinary Medicine at Purdue, Cora had a decision to make. Continue on in the Vet Scholars program, or follow her calling to help feed the world?Photo

Through church mission trips, Cora had traveled to Honduras where she saw poverty in a real way. These trips are what helped to plant the seed of spending her life helping to feed others. Changing her concentration from pre-vet to animal production, Cora added a second major in international agronomy. This helped her build a knowledge base in crops, soils, forages, animal nutrition, and international economics. Knowing that in order to reach her goals she would need research experience and a higher-level degree, Cora found the perfect fit at Ohio State with the international development extension graduate degree. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in agricultural extension and education with a focus on international development from Ohio State’s Department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership.

The research that Cora is conducting is focused on livestock production in the inner city of developing countries- something that hasn’t been researched to a great extent. She is developing a project in collaboration with the International Research Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) in Managua, Nicaragua. The project will survey livestock producers within the city limits of Managua, determining their needs for safety education with regards to raising livestock. With hopes of determining the safety education levels of farmers, especially regarding waste management and zoonotic diseases, Cora will then work with animal scientists, veterinarians, and OSU extension personnel to develop workshops and materials for use in Nicaragua.

She wishes to create a self sustaining program in Nicaragua by training local Nicaraguan livestock producers to teach the workshops to their peers, which would in turn help guide further education programs. Excited about her future and where her research at Ohio State will take her, Cora says,
“I look forward to being a part of the solution to world hunger in my lifetime and this is where it begins.”

Dear Leah…free student benefits?

Dear Leah

Q: What are some additional benefits that OSU offers students for free?

A: As college students, most of us are well aware of what The Ohio State University offers us in terms of classes to take, sports teams to cheer on, and clubs to join. Beyond these things, however, is a vast array of services and opportunities that the University offers to students free of charge that are often unbeknownst to students.

Are you a tech wizard that likes to be at the forefront of technological advances? Or just have a passion for computers? The Digital Union offers free 3-D printing, and resources to help you do it. Free video tutorials are also offered for those who want to learn more about coding, InDesign, or other complIMG_2511ex programs. Software that is otherwise quite expensive to buy to put on your own computer is also offered in the Digital Unions to complete any project you can think up.

If you’re like me, instead of technology mesmerizing you and piquing your interest, it seems to be it’s own foreign entity that, if touched, it will probably break. For anyone out there like me, then I have good news: Ohio State can offer you free help for that too. BuckeyeBar is one way that techHub helps give support for student’s technological devices. Students can feel free to get expert advice on their devices free of charge.

Technology not your thing, but adding world traveler to your resume is? Then look no further than the Office of International IMG_2509Affairs. No matter where you want to travel around the world, Ohio State has got the connections to get you there. Between “Global Gateways” (the OSU Gateway in Brazil is pictured here with me holding both the OSU and Brazilian flag) and various partnerships around the world, Ohio State can help students travel abroad to research, study, or serve- whichever your passion and interests may lie in.

Unless you are athletically blessed enough to be an OSU athlete, or just have way more self-motivation than I do, then college is a rude awakening in the exercise department. For me, high school was filled with sports and physical activities that became almost nonexistent as I moved into the concrete city my freshman year. Sure there are four gyms on campus that give students full access to workout equipment, swimming pools, indoor courts, and even a sauna, but where is the fun in all of that if you are just aimlessly wandering around the gym by yourself wondering which machine you should try to tackle next?

One facet of Rec Sports is group fitness classes that get you active and working out while also connecting you with others who want to do the same. Yoga, cycling, aquatics, kickboxing, cross training, zumba, hip-hop fitness….the list goes on and on.

While working out is important to student wellbeing, so is safety. The Department of Public Safety is on campus for the sole purpose of providing a safe environment for students, including a safe ride across campus. Much to the disappointment and scorn of my mother, in my three years at Ohio State I have yet to use this service for a variety of reasons, none of which are valid. My excuses for not calling campus safety to give me a lift at night include: “I feel bad for bothering them when I’m sure I’ll be safe walking home by myself,” and “Well I would call them, but I don’t know what the number is and by the time I call them and they pick me up I could have walked home.” In all reality, it would be much smarter of me to utilize this free service and put my mother’s mind at ease by simply saving the number (614) 292-3322 in my phone to call for a ride when I need it.

Although there are many more opportunities and services that OSU provides free of charge, it would take way too long to explain them all, so I’ll finish off with one final service: the Younkin Success Center. The Younkin Success Center offers students basically any service related to student success. This ranges from tutoring, to career counseling, to test-taking strategies, to assistance while writing research papers, to stress management. All of these are offered out of one “hub” of the Younkin Success Center, where they offer flexible hours to work with any student’s schedule.

College is short and your time at Ohio State will fly by before your eyes. So make the time you have here mean the most and utilize ways that Ohio State can help!

Honduras Study Abroad: Leche Rio Grande Tour

As a part of the Community Development study abroad trip to Honduras, students toured Leche Rio Grande, a facility in Choluteca, Honduras that packages milk and produces cheese. Students were able to see the process from start to finish as milk arrived at the facility from local farms until the cheese was pasteurized and then sampled.

Meet our Graduate Students: Kaitlyn Murray

Earning a college degree is a feat in itself, but Kaitlyn Murray has gone beyond that by earning two bachelor’s degrees and will soon receive her master’s degree. Kaitlyn graduated first in 2012 from Ohio State with a Bachelor of Science in biology. In 2013, she received her second diploma from Ohio State, a Bachelor of Science in animal sciences. Currently she is a graduate research associate in the Department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership where she is working on multiple projects.

Kaitlyn Murray Headshot - small Kaitlyn Murray, graduate associate

Kaitlyn was inspired to pursue graduate education as she saw the need for innovative retention strategies that support minority students of agriculture. As an LGBT student in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES), Kaitlyn had a unique vantage point where she could see agriculture as the most fundamental vehicle for social justice. Long-term goals for Kaitlyn include obtaining an administrative position in a college of agriculture and related sciences where she can focus on equity, inclusion, and student development. She aspires to encourage empathy, confidence, scholarly thought, and activism in students through a continued dialogue.

The proposed thesis that Kaitlyn is working on examines college student peer mentors and the development of their leadership abilities. Under the guidance of Dr. Jeff King, Dr. Jeff Hattey, and Dr. Susie Whittington, Kaitlyn is exploring this using data collected from students at Ohio State. Associated with this, Kaitlyn is developing an evaluation that measures the impact of the CFAES Peer Mentoring program.

Another graduate research project Kaitlyn is focusing on concerns the conditions that enhance or inhibit the effectiveness of interdisciplinary scientific research teams. Her research on this is being done alongside Julie Aldridge and Dr. Graham Cochran.

Beyond doing research, Kaitlyn is very involved within CFAES as a peer mentor program coordinator and a teaching assistant. She is also designing equity/inclusion programming to be implemented in the fall of 2016. Even with her busy schedule, Kaitlyn still finds time to volunteer at the Franklin Park Conservatory.

Kaitlyn was raised on a hobby farm in northwestern New plitviceJersey, where her family bred and raised alpacas, miniature horses, goats, and honeybees. Her background in agriculture will serve her well as she plans to spend her life making a positive impact on students pursuing degrees in agriculture.

Honduras Study Abroad: Vocational School Work Days

While in Choluteca, Honduras, students from Ohio State and Utah State completed projects at the Choluteca Vocational School, which included a connector sidewalk, entry way, and weight room floor. In the time we were allotted, projects were completed from start to finish, with the concrete pour for the weight room floor finished after we left.

Ways to Save by Being a Buckeye

By Leah Schwinn
Senior
Agricultural Communication

As college students, we know all too well the struggle of balancing the costs of life including tuition, rent, and groceries; not to mention other necessities like buying full season tickets for Ohio State football games. Trying to alleviate some of the financial stress students face, Ohio State offers some relief to students by offering ways to save.

If you take the time to look at what all is included in tuition costs, you will notice that there is a charge of $37.50 for a “Student Activity Fee.” If you’re at all like me, you might be wondering what on earth this is and why you are required to pay it. Well the good news? The benefits you receive from paying this fee greatly exceed the mere $40 you spent. Because of this student activity fee, Ohio State is able to offer students a wide variety of opportunities at either a discounted rate, or for free.

Throughout the year there are various entertainment opportunities on campus that students can go to free of charge, which include concerts, lectures, comedy shows, and movies. In recent years, Ohio State has offered students the following events: Big Sean concert, Bill Nye the Science Guy, 10 Lessons for Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse with Max Brooks, The Hunger Games movie night on the Oval, and even an event called “Cupcakes and Canvases with Cody” where you spend the evening painting and eating cupcakes.

If students are looking for something fun and affordable to do off campus, “d-tix” is a great option to check out. D-tix refers to discount tickets (as well as gift cards) that are available to students at the Ohio Union. Some of the attractions that offer discounts through d-tix are: Mad River Mountain, Cedar Point, Jeni’s Ice Cream, the Columbus Zoo, and much more.

Whether you are a freshman or a senior, we are all college students looking to save a buck. Take advantage of the ways that Ohio State can help you save!

The Ohio Union Activities Board (OUAB) is responsible for putting on a lot of events for students. To find out more about OUAB and their upcoming schedule, visit: http://ouab.osu.edu/events.aspx/2016/4?d=11&p=3
