Regional Campus Transition Day – Photos

On Wednesday, March 25, 2015, students from Ohio State’s regional campuses and ATI visited Columbus as part of Regional Campus Transition Day. This event is organized by the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.

Our department had two students, Scott McDermott and Mary Siekman, serve on the student panel for all visiting students.

In the afternoon, students were separated into smaller groups based on their major. During our time with these students, five current students who have made the transition in the past talked to them about their likes and dislikes of Columbus. Students were able to ask questions and have current students answer honestly. Questions about student life, Greek life, housing, meal plans, and courses were asked. After the panel, students were met with their future academic advisors to ask specific questions about scheduling and major courses.

The day was concluded with an ice ceram reception.

During the time with our department, students met Dr. Gary Straquadine, Dr. Susie Whittington, Dr. Emily Buck, Dr. Annie Specht, Dr. Caryn Filson and Emily Wickham. Current undergraduate students who had transitioned from a regional campus or ATI served on an informal panel answering questions from a variety of topics on meal plans, housing, credit transfer, major courses, university size and student life. DaleBaughman

C. Dale Baughman, 2015 Distinguished Alumni Award

Dale earned his Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education from The Ohio State University in 1961. After graduating, he started as a vocational agriculture (VoAg) and science teacher at Graham High School in Champaign County. During this time, he was also working toward his Master of Arts in Education Administration at Wittenberg University. In 1966, Dale became vocational director intern and administrative assistant to the Montgomery County Superintendent of Schools. Hired to spearhead the creation of a comprehensive vocational technology district for high school and adult students of Miami Valley, he obtained commitments from 13 school districts. Starting in 1971, Dale served as director/assistant superintendent of the Montgomery County JVS District until 1976 when he was named superintendent. The Montgomery County Joint Vocational School District continued to grow over time, increasing to 27 member districts. To more accurately reflect the expanded district, the name was changed to Miami Valley Career Technology Center in 1994. In 1995, Dale led students and staff to Russia on a 30-day educational exchange program.

Dale earned his PhD in Educational Administration from Miami University in 1972. Throughout the 70s, he taught graduate level courses at the University of Dayton.

A longtime member of Ohio Vocational Association and American Vocational Association, Dale has also held memberships with Ohio JVS District Superintendents’ Association (past president); Buckeye Association of Schools Administrators (legislative agent, representative at State Board of Education meetings, representative at Ohio School Facilities Commission meetings, and at-large member of the legislative committee); and the American Association of School Administrators.

Also active in his community, Dale has held memberships with the Greater Dayton Jaycees, Dayton Area Junior Achievement Board of Directors, Northmont Rotary Club (past president), United Way of Montgomery County Education Division (chairman and pacesetter), BrookHaven Retirement Community (director since 1992, president 2002–2014), and the Farm Bureau Advisory Council.

Dale and his wife, Carol, live in Brookville, Ohio. They are the parents of Gregory and Bradley.

Congratulations Dale on your many accomplishments and for representing the agricultural education profession.

Collegiate Washington DC Leadership Experience
The Collegiate Washington D.C. Leadership Experience is an all-expenses paid trip for collegiate leaders with an interest in agriculture. The OCWGA will be sponsoring students to attend the National Corn Congress in Washington D.C. and participate in a leadership experience. Any child of an OCWGA member or any collegiate OCWGA member is encouraged to apply. While in D.C., students will attend National Corn Congress sessions, visit with agricultural leaders and organizations, and have opportunities to make congressional visits on behalf of growers. This trip will be a four-day experience, from July 13-16, 2015, with opportunities for students to network with agricultural leaders, growers from across the U.S., other collegiate leaders and OCWGA board members. The OCWGA wants to provide students with the resources and experiences to develop as leaders in the agricultural community. Attendees of the Collegiate Washington D.C. Leadership Experience will walk away better prepared for their future careers and involvement in agriculture.

To apply, students can find the application and trip information below.
