Insect Curation

Fall 2019 – (for credit – EEOB 3191 Undergraduate Internship)


Quick description: Interns will learn how to prepare, preserve, and digitize museum-quality insect specimens.


Requirements: Attention to detail. Minimum commitment of 5 hours/week in the collection.

Desirable/Helpful skills: excellent oral and written communication skills, basic computer skills, especially with spreadsheets.

Training provided: understanding the value of collections, insect preparation, specimen handling, natural history collection digitization (label data transcription and specimen photography).

Supervisor: Dr. Luciana Musetti, Curator.

This internship is intended to provide OSU students in the fields of Biology, Entomology, Forestry, Conservation, and related fields, with hands-on experience in the preparation and documentation of insect specimens for scientific research and for the long term preservation of the specimens in collections. Interns will learn basic curatorial standards and techniques used in insect collections, including specimen drying, mounting, labeling, and electronic data capture. We are looking for driven students who are devoted to learning and who are enthusiastic about this opportunity.

1. Insect Imaging Internship

The Triplehorn Insect Collection is seeking undergraduate student interns who are interested in photography, entomology, and natural history for training in insect specimen imaging.

The Specimen Imaging Intern will learn to use the software, equipment, and techniques that are needed to produce publication quality micro- and macro-photography images of museum insect specimens.  Some experience with photography and Adobe Photoshop is desirable.
