Junior Fair Board: Officers and Theme

Although the weather doesn’t quite feel like summer, the Junior Fair Board has been hard at work preparing for the 2018 Muskingum County Fair. We are excited to announce your 2018 officers:

President: Adam Crock
Vice President: Rachel Hampp
Secretary: Kamryn Kreis
Treasurer: Kailey Lindsley

If you have ideas or suggestions for improvements to the Junior Fair, feel free to reach out to one of these youth. The officers led a great discussion at the last meeting which led to our 2018 Junior Fair theme: Stand Out with Junior Fair!

We look forward to seeing how you incorporate this theme into your booths and barn displays!

Livestock Quality Assurance Certification

Hello 4-H Family! To help clear up some confusion: the Beef QA programs held at Muskingum Livestock DO NOT fulfill the LQA certification required for youth exhibiting a market animal, lactating dairy cow, or lactating dairy goat at the Muskingum County Fair.

Certification can be obtained in two ways:
1. Youth can participate in an LQA program
provided by OSU Extension.
2.Youth can participate in the test out option.

For more information and program dates, please refer to page 22 of the Muskingum County 4-H Family Handbook: http://go.osu.edu/familyhandbook

Working on Woodworking?

Are you an advisor whose members are taking woodworking? A parent with a child enrolled in woodworking? Specific projects include:

Measuring Up #556
Making The Cut #557
Nailing It Together #558
Finishing Up #559
Woodworking Master #560A

Last year at the Ohio State Fair, 39 4-H youth were not considered for final placings because they used ineligible tools. Check out the Ohio State 4-H Woodworking Guidelines to make sure tools youth wish to use for their specific project are allowed.

Horse Safety and Ethics Training

All first-time horse project participants must participate in the Horse Safety and Ethics Training Program with a parent or guardian before they can begin riding their horse at 4-H activities.  There are two opportunities to attend the program: March 12 and March 29 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. each evening at the Extension Office.

Call the Extension Office to pre-register. Please be on time. No late admittance allowed.  Both parent/guardian and youth must read 191R Horses, Safety and You prior to attending the program and bring the book with them to the program. Volunteers should purchase this book with their book order so the youth have time to read it with a parent prior to the program.

4-H Project Spotlight: Beekeeping

As I was sitting in our 4-H project book room, the Beekeeping project book caught my eye. I’ve always been fascinated by bees. Perhaps because they produce one of my favorite sweet treats: honey. Or perhaps because their pollination efforts are crucial to our every day eating habits – pollinating about 1/3 of the crops we eat.

The Beekeeping project is a powerhouse of STEM activities hidden in hands-on hive work that teach youth how to keep records, communicate, and conduct experiments. Beginners with no experience don’t even need to own their own hive! Youth investigate a topic of interest such as bee development, pollen and nectar, or the history of beekeeping. Youth set learning goals such as attending a local beekeeping class, visiting a large beekeeping operation, or participating in a wax/honey judging contest to dive in deeper and learn more about these interesting insects.

The real home-run of this project is the work youth do in maintaining and observing their hive. Youth keep records on what bees are eating, what flowers are blooming in the area, predator damage to the hive, and identification and treatment of any parasites found. The equipment and supply inventory and income and expense records teach youth how to manage personal finances and make good decisions related to money.

This project does require the purchase of some equipment that your child will need when working with bees – at minimum (if you will be working with someone else’s bees) you’ll want to purchase a veil and gloves.

Don’t have bees? Don’t worry! Let us help connect you with local beekeepers who would love to help the first year of the project! Our 4-H enrollment deadline is less than one month away – don’t miss out on this (or any other) fascinating project!

2018 Junior Fair Swine Schedule

The Muskingum County Senior Fair Board has made a decision to reduce the number of days swine are on the fair grounds for the health and safety of the citizens of Muskingum County and the animals. The decision was made due to a recommendation from State Veterinarian, Dr. Tony Forshey.

The 2018 Muskingum County Junior Fair Swine schedule is:

Arrival Monday, August 13 9:00PM – Tuesday 8:00AM
Weigh-In Tuesday, August 14 8:00AM
Break Tuesday, August 14 Evening
Show Wednesday, August 15 8:00AM
Showmanship Thursday, August 16 8:00AM
Sale Friday, August 17 1:00PM
Dismissal Friday, August 17 Following Sale

We understand a change in schedule will mean a change in process for many of our of 4-H families. We hope you will continue to participate in the 4-H hog project. As more details are finalized they will be announced to club advisors, via email, on Facebook, and here on our blog.
