The 4-H Committee is now accepting nominations for the Muskingum County Friend of 4-H Award, which recognizes an individual, family, business or organization who has provided exceptional support to the county 4-H program.

It’s also time for outstanding 4-H volunteers to be nominated to receive the John & Dorothy Montgomery Leadership Award.

Nomination forms for both awards are available at the Extension Office or on our website. Completed nominations are due to the Extension Office by September 1. 

Both awards will be presented at the Volunteer Recognition Banquet on September 25.

Superior Ratings

Congratulations to the following youth who achieved a Superior Rating (90+) at Livestock Skillathon! Youth will be recognized during their species Showmanship event. Horse members will be recognized during Tuesday or Wednesday of the show.

Award Winners

Youth who received a score of 90 or above at Livestock Skillathon are eligible to compete for age division and overall winner awards within their species. The following youth will be recognized for their achievements at the fair when Superiors are recognized.

Whether it has been designing submarines to study sea horses or building cost efficient and safe animal handling facilities day campers at the Muskingum Family Y have been working hard each Tuesday in July to solve STEM challenges. STEM stands for Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics. Each week campers have been engaged in diverse challenges that taught important skills such as critical thinking, creativity and collaboration. Each week presents a whole new challenge but as you can see from the photos it has been a lot of fun. We are looking forward to the next sessions on harvesting grains and designing tractor seats.

Help is needed at the Fairgrounds with barn set up.

Rabbit Barn – Saturday, August 3

Rabbit Barn set up will begin at 9 a.m. and go until finished. Committee members will be there to power wash, set up cages, etc.

Hello everyone and thank you for such a warm welcome to the 4-H program in this new role! It has been a great month so far meeting lots of new people and putting names to faces! Please don’t hesitate to stop and talk with me or send me an email at tom.35@osu.edu , I’d love to hear about your role in our existing programs and talk about opportunities to continue to grow Muskingum County 4-H.

My role as Non-Traditional 4-H educator is an exciting opportunity. I will be giving leadership to a few existing programs such as Real Money Real World and CARTEENS but will also be looking to expand our reach to include more workforce development programs as well as STEM programming. Jamie and I are currently working with the Muskingum County Farm Bureau and the Muskingum County Dairy Promoters to create a Scavenger Hunt at the fair. Informational posters will be hanging in most of the barns so make sure you complete the activity to earn your prize. I am currently working on a County Government Day which will be a great opportunity for Muskingum County Youth to get a glimpse at what it is like to work in public service, details will be coming soon!

Our camping program’s success is not possible without a committed group of teen counselors (4-H age 14-18) and adult volunteers. Our camping year starts with the availability of the camp counselor application in late October (November 15 deadline). While previous counselors only need to complete the application to be considered, new counselor candidates must attend Camp Counselor Selection Night, where they participate in a variety of activities to assess their counseling skills. It is a very competitive process – there are always more applicants than spots available.

Serving as a part of our camp team is a tremendous time commitment, as meetings start in December and continue through the end of June. During that time, counselors and staff attend 20+ hours of meetings to be trained for their role and to plan numerous aspects of our camp. First-time counselors are also required to attend an overnight workshop at 4-H Camp Ohio. A HUGE thanks goes out to our 2019 camp team for their hard work!

Cloverbuds are invited to participate in Cloverbud Show and Tell on Sunday, August 11 at 1 p.m. at the Entertainment Tent at the Muskingum County Fair. Register by calling the Extension Office or e-mail Jamie (mcconnell.210@osu.edu) by August 1.

Cloverbuds can present on any topic of interest and use posters, displays or other props. Individual or team presentations are welcome.
