Master Gardener Volunteer Meeting
December 11, 2025

Opening and Pledge of Allegiance – Pam opened the meeting, and Chet led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Committee Reports

  • Community Outreach – Thresea Harris – Our tree at Mill Creek is decorated and will be there until January 7th. Thresea thanked Lois and Val for helping.
  • Hospitality – Natalie Fraser and Peg Zeleznik – Peg asked us to sign up to bring food for the classes for our 2026 MGV Training Class. The classes will start February 10th through April 28th. We have 21 applications, so plan on 30 that will eat. We always show great hospitality to our new trainees.
  • Veterans- Chester Kaschak, Carol Kirsch, and Al Leonhart – Carol told us the wreaths were placed last Saturday. She said it was a great ceremony to honor our veterans. American Legion Post 574 provided the Color Guard. Students from West Branch High School assisted, and Mason Brown performed TAPS. Kristen thanked Carol and her committee for the great job in planning the ceremony.

Administration Report

  • I still need speakers for Morning with the Masters Series – Kristen needs more speakers for the library presentations. You can speak on any gardening topic. It can be a fun, light-hearted topic. It only needs to be 1 hour, which includes 15 minutes for questions. You can do a presentation with PowerPoint or you can use props.
  • RSVP for the FREE Occasional Quantity Cooks Class on December 18th 10 am to 12:30 pm at the Office
  • RSVP for the Banquet due December 19th – You can notify the office by email or phone call.
  • Recertification in HOC due December 31stIf your recertification is not done by December 31st, you will become inactive. Also, this is part of winning our Platinum MGV group designation every year.
  • Volunteer and Continuing Education Hours are due December 31st, but enter them ASAP
  • $15 State Dues need to be turned into the office by January 31st. Checks payable to OSU Extension – You can pay by cash or check and you can pay at the banquet.
  • If you need a new name tag let me know ASAP! – Kristen told us she is going to order name tags next week, so let her know if you need one. Also, let her know if you want a magnetic, lanyard or pin.
  • The Extension Office will be closed December 24th through January 1st for Winter Recess – Kristen will not be available by email this week.
  • Stephanie Hughes’s son passed away, please think of her and her family at this time.

Old Business

  • Holiday Donation Vote for 2025: Youngstown Blue Coats. Bring your donation items to the office anytime we are open until Monday, December 15th. You can gain the following hours for donating certain items:
    • 2 hours – Adult Coats, Boots, Tents, Sleeping bags
    • 1 hour – blankets, kids’ coats, tarps
    • .5 hour – 2 pairs of gloves, 2 winter hats, 2 pairs of heavy socks
  • These items can be dropped off before 4:30pm on Monday.
  • Pam introduced our officers and committee chairs for next year.

New Business

  • Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest – Doreen won the Ugly Sweater Contest.
  • There was a drawing for MGVs who have recertified, and there were 3 winners.

November 13, 2025

Opening and Pledge of Allegiance

President Pam Baytos welcomed all, and Chester Kaschak led us in the Pledge.

Committee Reports

  • Community Outreach – Thresea Harris

Thresea announced that our Christmas tree at Fellows Gardens will have a butterfly theme. The decorating day is tentatively Dec.3. Please call her (no texting) to let her know if you can help and she will provide the time. If you have butterflies to donate, let her know.

  • Education – Karen Gates and Stephanie Hughes

There will be a sign-up sheet next month for food donations at upcoming classes for new volunteers.

  • OSU Extension Grounds – David Burnham and Paula Kohler

The second order of mulch came in and is now in beds. David said they planted spring bulbs in the verbena bed. The cana lily bulbs were dug up and most were saved. Extra bulbs were available to MGVs who wanted them.

  • Plant and Pest Clinic – David Sprague

The committee met Nov.12 to review this year’s clinic activities. The clinic is now closed, however, any future questions will be forwarded to David periodically.

  • Recruitment and Retention – Marilyn McKinley and Kary Shively

Marilyn was pleased to announce that our Open House event in October was very successful with 28 in attendance. The majority of those present had already registered for the new classes. Lots of help will be needed come next February for the classes.

  • Veterans– Chester Kaschak, Carol Kirsch, and AL Leonhart

Carol reminded us of the upcoming placement of wreaths on veterans graves Dec.6 at North Georgetown Cemetery. Chester will be Master of Ceremonies and students from West Branch are involved in the program. Those helping are asked to arrive at 8:30. The event begins at 10am. Approximately 100 wreaths will be place on veterans graves.

Administration Report

  • 2026 Class Applications Due December 5th
  • We need helpers for the Holiday Centerpiece classes December 9th and 10th. Please bring greenery for these classes as well! Sign-up sheets to help on back table.
  • Hands on Connect Day: December 11th 9 am up to the start of the meeting(last day)
  • Recertification: Dec.1
  • RSVP for the Banquet due December 19th. Free if your hours are in or the cost is $20.
  • Volunteer and Continuing Education Hours are due December 31st, but enter them ASAP

Old Business

  • Holiday Donation Vote for 2025: The following were voted on by MGVs in attendance and Youngstown Blue Coats received the most votes. We have been asked to please donate items before our Dec. Meeting. There is a very big need for warm clothing and for children’s items as well. Many do not have adequate clothing for winter. Kristen will be sending out information for donations.

New Business

  • State Conference Update – Pam and Others?

Marilyn announced that even though we did not receive top awards for submitted projects we did receive a Platinum award for our MGV program which is a very high honor. It was disappointing to those that worked long hours in preparing and submitting our projects and of course to those involved in the special projects as well. Linda Dolak was thanked for all the hours put in for writing and word processing the submissions. About nine MGVs attended the Conference and Bob Eister encouraged us to keep being creative and not give up! We do need new projects for the future.

  • Liverpool Garden Club would like a speaker July 24th on “Growing Best Tomatoes” and on Oct 23rd on Good and Bad Critters in the Garden.
  • Lois announced the tragic passing of former MGV Jason Baker (class of 2012).
  • Pinky announced the East Liverpool Beautification event on Nov.30th. Tour of 1-6 homes (hers included) and cost is $20. contact her or the Carnegie Library for tickets.
  • MGVs present were interested in having another “Trivia Night” hosted by Marilyn’s son.Kristen has already given the ok for the event. It will include music,trivia, dinner and some gifts. A donation of $10 (or more) is suggested. Date to be determined in Feb/March. Last year’s first Trivia night was lots of fun!
  • At our fun Dec 11th meeting please wear your ugliest Christmas sweater! There will be a prize for the winner!

MGV Minutes for October 2, 2025

Opening and Pledge of Allegiance – Chester led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Committee Reports

  • Community Outreach – Thresea Harris – Thresea reported that our Christmas Tree at Fellows will be decorated on December 3rd or 4th. The tree will be taken down on January 6th. If you are interested in helping, let Thresea know by calling her home phone or texting her cell phone.
  • Hospitality – Natalie Fraser and Peg Zeleznik – Natalie passed around a sign-up for our Open House on October 21st. You can sign-up for a finger food light lunch snack or cookies/sweets. We ask that nothing requires silverware to eat.
  • OSU Extension Grounds – David Burnham and Paula Kohler – No report.
  • Recruitment and Retention – Marilyn McKinley and Kary Shively – Kary told us they are having a meeting on October 7th at 10:30 am to plan for the Open House on October 21st. If you would like to help at the Open House, notify Kary or Marilyn or come to the meeting on the 7th. You will be able to sign up for an assignment for the Open House.

Administration Report

  • Hands On Connect Day: October 15th 9 am to 7 pm – Kristen announced she is having a Hands On Connect open house. You can come in at any time during these hours. It is recommended that you bring your own device, along with your charger. The office does have an iPad available, if needed.

Master Gardener Volunteer Meeting Minutes

September 11, 2025

Opening and Pledge of Allegiance: Vice President Stephanie Barkay welcomed all and Al Leonhart led us in the Pledge.

  • We had a moment of silence to honor the memory of those who were lost on 9-11.

Committee Reports

  • Bring One Take One (Exchange Only) – Bob and Marianna Eister

Marianna announced that there were about 30 people that attended this three hour event. They brought five plants to exchange and the experience was a very positive one. The weather was nice and she thanked the MGVs that helped to make things run smoothly.

  • Canfield Fair – Jim Zeleznik

Jim covered our meeting tables with the brown paper upon which many fair goers wrote their special “Wishes”. We enjoyed reading the many interesting notes with so many positive thoughts. It was suggested that this expression of those visiting our MGV fair exhibit could possibly be a great article for the Vindy. Let Jim know if you would like to write about this for the Vindy. Jim thanked his fair committee for making the display so welcoming, relaxing, peaceful and beautiful! In particular he thanked Ed and Doreen for the fairy garden display, Tom for the wishing well, John for the birdhouse area, Anissa for the signs. There were about forty MGVs that helped make our area so special.

  • Community Outreach – Thresea Harris

Thresea said that this year we are able to choose our own theme for decorating the Christmas tree. Let her know if you have any ideas.

  • Education – Karen Gates and Stephanie Hughes

Karen said to meet at 9 a.m. at the extension office for the Sept 16th field trip to Holden Arboretum to carpool. You may meet them there at the Arboretum at 10:15. Address is 9550 Sperry Rd, Kirtland, OH

Pinky said the committee recently had a cleanup at the Lisbon garden. There will be an October clean up. If you would like to help, let Pinky know and she will add you to her email for the date in October.

  • OSU Extension Grounds – David Burnham and Paula Kohler

The grounds committee was thanked and applauded for their efforts in keeping the grounds so lovely. It looked beautiful for fair time and received many compliments from the public. David and Paula thanked their committee members for their dedication, time and effort and for showing up whenever they could to help.

  • Plant and Pest Clinic – David Sprague

The clinic has been steadily busy with questions and walk-ins. MGVs are always welcome to help on Monday and Thursday mornings from nine till noon. David read a note that he received recently commenting on our beautiful Extension grounds area. We applauded again to recognize the grounds’ committee members.

  • Recruitment and Retention – Marilyn McKinley and Kary Shively

Kary reminded us of the upcoming Open House for prospective Master Gardener recruits. It will take Place on Tue. Oct 21 from 1-3pm. She passed around a sign-up sheet with two areas of need: Greet & Guide and Floater. If you would like to help let her know or the office. They would also like 5-6 items for door prizes.

  • Veterans Committee- Chester Kaschak, Carol Kirsch, and Al Leonhart

Mark Williams said there is about $1400 in the account. Wreath cost is about the same and they have been ordered from Tractor Supply. The event is on

Dec. 6 at the North Georgetown Cemetery.

Administration Report

  • Hands on Connect Day: October 15th 9 am to 7 pm

Kristen announced she will have a HOC “Help Day”. She gave us letters on our HOC volunteer and CE hours, if MGVs have not met the required hours for the year If you need more CE hours, refer to our newsletter for CE opportunities. If you find good education on the Kissing Bug, let the office know so they can share the resource with other MGVs. The Plant and Pest Clinic is available for MGVs to get additional Volunteer hours. If you are having trouble getting your required number of hours, let Kristen know and she will assist you.

  • Hospitality for Extension Training

Our extension has been asked to assist with training for other Extension staff in the region. There will be about 30 people for each training session. The training will be on six dates from September to December and breakfast and dessert Hospitality items are needed for each date. A sign-up sheet is available for the Hospitality items for each training session. Kristen also will send us an email for open dates of Hospitality items.

  • Conference Update

Remember the next MGV meeting will be on October 2. David Sprague was nominated for Outstanding MGV of the Year by our State Committee. David is in the top 10. The top 5 will be announced at the State Conference.

August 14, 2025

Opening and Pledge of Allegiance:

Committee Reports

  • Bring One Take One (Exchange Only) – Bob and Marianna Eister
    • Kristen announced that the plant exchange went well.
  • Community Outreach –
    • Thresea Harris thanked all the MGVs that attended the Veggies and More events and said it was a very successful season. The Good Nature Gardener Partners is a part of the program. The Vindy newspaper had a very good article with photos of some children and master gardeners at the last tour held at St. Patrick’s gardens. We do have the Christmas tree and more to come on this later. Kristen would appreciate suggestions of Youngstown gardens to attend for next year, preferably not a private garden.
  • Education – Karen Gates and Stephanie Hughes
    • The committee met before the monthly meeting and Karen distributed a sign-up sheet for the next field trip. Jim Zeleznik Said the trip will be to the Holden Arboretum on Tues.Sept.16. It is located in Kirtland, OH (Lake County) and the cost on that day is $12 for adults. Meet at OSU Ext. office to carpool at 9a.m or meet there at 10:15a.m.
  • Hospitality – Natalie Fraser and Peg Zeleznik
    • Peg said there is a need for food donations for the upcoming MGV Open House on Tues, Oct. 21. The committee would like finger foods (napkin only) by noon that day or you may bring them in the day before. A sign-up was available.
  • New and Active Pollinator Gardens – Marilyn McKinley and Gail Siembida
    • Pinky will be organizing a clean-up day for the pollinator garden at the Columbiana County Fairgrounds. There were many positive comments about the pollinator garden at the Columbiana Fair.
  • OSU Extension Grounds – David Burnham and Paula Kohler
    • Our OSU grounds look great, and our committee continues to weed and water for our upcoming Canfield Fair. There are free five-gallon buckets near the shed if you need one.
  • Plant and Pest Clinic – David Sprague
    • The clinic has been busy answering lots of vegetable questions, especially on blossom end rot. Consistent watering and mulch will help reduce this problem. Committee members will be getting together for lunch on Thurs.Aug.21st at the Dutch House restaurant in Columbiana.
  • Recruitment and Retention – Marilyn McKinley and Kary Shively
    • Volunteers are needed to greet and assist guests at the Open House Oct.21st. You may sign up at the September meeting.
  • Veterans Committee- Chester Kaschak, Carol Kirsch, and Al Leonhart
    • 110 wreaths have been ordered for the N. Georgetown Cemetery on Gilson Rd. Ceremony is at 10am on Dec.6. West Branch has confirmed a trumpeter for taps that day. Donations are still being accepted for the wreaths.

 

Administration Report

  • Apparel Order – The order came in and Kristen gave master gardeners their order as they came in. If you haven’t received your order, stop by the office.

New Business

  • Canfield Fair – Jim Zeleznik & Kristen Eisenhauer
    • Jim told us the displays are being set up. The displays at the fairgrounds will be set up on Monday, August 25th. Construction will be done first at 9am. Master gardeners can start bringing their plants in at 10am. Tear down will be done on September 2nd. If you have bird houses or plants to bring for the display, notify Jim with pictures or description. Indoor plants are also needed. If you have bright colored or flower print umbrellas, they are also needed
    • Kristen told us master gardeners will get 1 ticket and a parking ticket per day for each day you signed up. Master gardeners should wear Master Gardener OSU apparel or a red or gray shirt. Kristen reminded us to check plants before watering to avoid overwatering. She asked us to engage with people walking through to answer questions and provide information. We will be in Building 25. The parking pass is for the parking at the extension office. Packets neeed to be picked up at the office prior to fair.

July 10, 2025

Opening and Pledge of Allegiance

Pam welcomed all, and our MGV armed service veterans led us in the pledge.

Committee Reports

  • Bring One Take One (Exchange Only) – Bob and Marianna Eister: Bob announced the event will take place rain or shine, Aug.9th. Committee members received an email regarding who is working and the directions regarding the event. Please arrive at 8:30am as guests will start arriving by 9:30am. BOTO will start at 10am and include about 5 rounds of exchanges.
  • Canfield Fair – Jim Zeleznik: Kristen has a water feature to give to Tom. Gail said they are in need of children’s size umbrellas for display.
  • Community Outreach – Thresea Harris: The Veggies and More Monday night events are going well. There were about 20 at the Dorothy Day House tour. Community is having fun attending and learning, and playing educational events. The next tour on 7/14 is at Flying High Grow Urban Farm.
  • Education – Karen Gates and Stephanie Hughes: Karen attended the Lavender Farm and said they had beautiful bouquets of lavender to collect. There is an upcoming field trip on July 15th from 10-12 at Bending Oak Permaculture Farm. The address is 100 Cottage Grove Drive, 44505. If it rains, the event will be cancelled.
  • Hospitality – Natalie Fraser and Peg Zeleznik: A sign-up sheet for the BOTO was passed around.
  • New and Active Pollinator Gardens – Marilyn McKinley and Gail Siembida: Pinky has been handling the Lisbon Garden at the Columbiana Fairgrounds.
  • OSU Extension Grounds – David Burnham and Paula Kohler: David said the committee has been busy weeding, dead-heading, and watering the beds. One order of wood chips has been delivered, with more to come.
  • Plant and Pest Clinic – David Sprague: David said they are very busy in the clinic now and gave us examples of questions they have received recently.
  • Recruitment and Retention – Marilyn McKinley and Kary Shively: Marilyn announced that a list of people has been contacted to encourage their participation in the MGV program. A table with info on OSU MGV program will be set up at the BOTO and Canfield Fair. An open house is planned for sometime in October.
  • Veterans Committee- Chester Kaschak, Carol Kirsch, and Al Leonhart: Carol has ordered 110 wreaths. The cost to sponsor a family is $10.

Administration Report:

  • Kristen announced that the Morning with the Masters library talks are going well. We are in need of a host at the July 16th Boardman library (Linda Dolak is unable to help). Marilyn M. is presenting on Ohio pollinators.
  • Columbiana County Fair Sign Up: Let the office know if you can help at the MGV table to give out info about OSU MGV program and to answer gardening questions.
  • Canfield Fair Sign Up: Signup sheets were available at the end of the meeting. Kristen discussed expectations if one signs up to help. She has limited fair entrance tickets. If you cannot attend your designated day/time, please return your ticket to the office. Please wear your MGV shirt and ID and plan on helping and sharing time for the bathroom, drinks, etc. Someone has to be there always. There are three shifts during the day: 10-2, 2-6 and 6-9. The event is in building #25. You will receive a parking pass for our OSU Ext. parking lot and must park at the back of the lot as the front is available for community paid parking. Kristen advised us to come early for the parking space and enjoy the fair.
  • Threshold Garden Demonstrations –Let the Office know if you can do this.
    • July 23rd at 10 a.m. Topic: Top 10 ways to improve your garden (can be adjusted if an available MGV has a different topic they’re more comfortable with) Location: Threshold Community Garden, 71 W Taggart St, East Palestine, OH 44413 Setup: Picnic tables and benches @ garden for seating, no PPT required, demonstration-type class
    • August 19th at 10 a.m. Topic options: Planning for your Fall Garden, or a garden art class – (topic dependent upon MGV preference, $$ is available for purchasing garden art materials if that is an interest in fairy gardens or painted rocks) Location: Threshold Community Garden, 71 W Taggart St, East Palestine, OH 44413 Setup: Picnic tables and benches @ garden for seating, no PPT required, demonstration-type class

  • The upcoming 60th Annual Horticulture Show by the Gardeners of Greater Youngstown is Aug.23&24 at Fellows’ Riverside Gardens. The event is free and will include a youth division. You may consider entering, as ribbons and prizes are awarded in every category. There is a flower arrangement and fairy garden category this year, too. Or just plan on attending and enjoying!
  • Stephanie Hughes was in attendance, and she said she was very happy to be back as she missed everyone!
  • Natalie Fraser was thanked for all her help as the host at a recent library event.

Master Gardener Volunteer Meeting

June 12, 2025

Opening and Pledge of Allegiance – Mark Williams led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Committee Reports

  • Bring One Take One (Exchange Only) – Bob and Marianna Eister – Marianna announced the flyers are done. The committee met today and there are still available assignments for MGVs to sign up. MGVs should arrive at 8:30 am on August 9th. People will start dropping off their plants at 9:30 and the plant exchange will start at 10 am. We will have tables set up for Recruitment and Retention, Plant and Pest Clinic, and Hospitality.
  • Canfield Fair – Jim Zeleznik – Jim told us there will be a planning meeting on Tuesday, August 5th from 5:30 – 6:30 pm. The theme will be What Are Your Garden Wishes. If you have plants you would like to bring, let Jim know so he can work it into the display planning.
  • Community Outreach – Thresea Harris – The last Veggies and More was cancelled. The Paw Paw Orchard may be rescheduled. The Youngstown Botanical Garden tour is scheduled for 6/16 at 6 pm at 528 West Indianola Ave, Youngstown. There is a sign up for this event.
  • Education – Karen Gates and Stephanie Hughes – Karen announced a field trip is scheduled for July 5th from 10 am – 12 pm to go to a pick lavender event in Canton. We will have to carpool. You will need to meet at the extension office, so we can leave by 8:30 am.
  • Garden Workshop – Patty Kacenski and Jim Merva – No report.
  • Hospitality – Natalie Fraser and Peg Zeleznik – Natalie told us there is a signup sheet to bring baked goods for the Bring One Take One event.
  • New and Active Pollinator Gardens – Marilyn McKinley and Gail Siembida – Pinky announced they were working at the fairgrounds in Lisbon today. Marilyn told us the pollinator garden at Waterworth Park in Salem is now being taken care of by Bee City. It is a success story because the plan was to have a group in Salem maintain the pollinator garden.
  • OSU Extension Grounds – David Burnham and Paula Kohler – David told us they planted vegetables in the raised planter by the shed. The other planters at the extension office have been planted with different summer flowers. They wanted to give a variety of ideas. David said 400 annuals were planted at the extension, some of them were purchased by the extension and some were donated by MGVs.
  • Plant and Pest Clinic – David Sprague – David reported there has been an increase in questions in the last week as the weather has improved.
  • Recruitment and Retention – Marilyn McKinley and Kary Shively – Marilyn told us they will start planning for an open house.
  • Veterans Committee- Chester Kaschak, Carol Kirsch, and Al Leonhart – Carol said the Wreaths for Veterans is going well. Tractor Supply told her they don’t expect there to be an increase in price for the wreaths. 100 wreaths will be needed for the 100 veterans at the North Georgetown cemetery. Carol told us she has been working with the cemetery to have the flags put down for Veteran’s Day, that were used for Memorial Day. Carol told us they’ve been distributing information in North Georgetown to increase community awareness of the plans. John Schoeni has been assisting because he’s from the area. GD Worth American Legion in North Georgetown will be there for the ceremony. They were encouraged to ask a Junior student from West Branch High School to play TAPS.

  • Apparel Order – Kristen told us she expects our order to come in 6 weeks from now and we should receive them prior to the Canfield Fair.

Committee Reports

  • Bring One Take One (Exchange Only) – Bob and Marianna Eister – No report.
  • Canfield Fair – Jim Zeleznik – Kristen announced the committee will meet Tuesday, May 27 at 5:30 in the office.
  • Community Outreach – Thresea Harris –Good Nature Gardener Partners program applications are due May 23rd. The Veggies and More Tour will start June 2nd and will be every Monday night at 6 pm. Anyone interested in helping with the Cityscape’s event may still do so, however, they have run out of t-shirts.
  • Education – Karen Gates and Stephanie Hughes – Karen announced that you may pick your own bouquets of lavender at Sandy Creek Ventures from 10-12pm on the following Saturdays: 6-21,6-28,7-5 and 7-12. Their address is 9336 Mapleton St. SE, East Canton, OH 44730. If you are interested in doing the trolley tour of Mill Creek Park on May 20 from 3-4 let Karen know asap.
  • Garden Workshop – Patty Kacenski and Jim Merva – Patty thanked all who helped with this event. It was very successful.
  • Hospitality – Natalie Fraser and Peg Zeleznik – No report.
  • New and Active Pollinator Gardens – Marilyn McKinley and Gail Siembida – Merabeth (Pinky) reported they are working at the Columbiana County Fairgrounds weekly, removing thistle and weeds.
  • OSU Extension Grounds – David Burnham and Paula Kohler – David said the committee has been busy cleaning, pruning, and mulching the grounds. The old shed was emptied out, and a new shed was set up with all the necessities. He thanked the committee members and requested cardboard of any kind be donated for the next project, which will be discussed in an upcoming email. The Extension grounds look great, and a big “thank you” to this committee was given.
  • Plant and Pest Clinic – David Sprague – Questions are flowing into the clinic and David welcomed all to help on Mondays or Thursdays from 9am till noon.
  • Recruitment and Retention – Marilyn McKinley and Kary Shively – No report.
  • Veterans Committee- Chester Kaschak, Carol Kirsch, and Al Leonhart – Carol reported that for the next two years the North Georgetown Cemetery veterans’ graves will receive wreaths. This year’s event will take place on Dec.6. Donations of $10 per wreath would be greatly appreciated. Donation forms are available in the office.

Administration Report

  • There will be a training class in 2026 applications are available and due by December 5th. An R & R open house will be planned after the fair.
  • Apparel Order- Orders will be placed on 5-9. If you haven’t paid for your order, payment must be made before orders are placed.
  • Pollinator Palooza – 2 more helpers needed for this event on 5-10 from 8am till 12:30pm. See Kristen
  • Pollinator Garden Clean-Up – Let Kristen know if you can help pull weeds in our pollinator garden this upcoming week. (not on a rainy day)

  • MGV Conference Scholarship

Opening and Pledge of Allegiance – Al Leonhart led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Committee Reports

  • Bring One Take One (Exchange Only) – Bob and Marianna Eister – Bob announced there will be a planning meeting for BOTO at 5:30 pm on June 12th. An email will go out to the committee members about the planning meeting. The BOTO will be held on August 9th at 10:00 am.
  • Canfield Fair – Jim Zeleznik – Jim informed us the committee will meet on Tuesday, April 29th from 5:30 – 6:30pm. The theme is “What are your Gardening Wishes?”
  • Community Outreach – Thresea Harris – Thresea told us the Christmas tree was ordered.
  • Education – Karen Gates and Stephanie Hughes – No report.
  • Hospitality – Natalie Fraser and Peg Zeleznik – Natalie informed us to bring in baked goods on Friday before 4:30pm or early Saturday morning.
  • New and Active Pollinator Gardens – Marilyn McKinley and Gail Siembida – No report.

  • Garden Workshop – Patty Kacenski and Jim Merva – Jim told us he has made a few necessary changes to the assignments. Everyone should have their assignments. We will set up the table and chairs and fill goodie bags at 1:00pm on Friday. On Saturday, we should be there no later than 8:30 am. The doors of the extension will be unlocked at 8:00 am. Kristen told us 23 attendees have registered.

Administration Report

  • There will be a training class in 2026; applications are available and due by December 5th.
  • Flying High Series – Volunteers are needed for the Urban Fruit Tree Pruning Clinic at the Hope for Newport on April 19th and Mahoning Valley Campus of Care on April 19th. If you can help, notify Kristen.
  • Help with the Fabric Frenzy 4/29 & 4/30 – Kristen told us she will need help on April 29th and April 30th from 9am – 4pm to help prepare for the Fabric Frenzy on May 2nd and 3rd. Please let her know if you are planning on helping.
  • Apparel Order – Kristen announced she sent out an email notifying us about apparel we could order. The order is due by May 1st. New Business

  • MGV Conference Scholarship
    • The 2025 MGV State Conference will be held in Wooster at the Secrest Arboretum. The dates of the Conference are Thursday October 9th and Friday October 10th. The total price of the conference is $75.00. Mahoning County will be offering 5 $40 scholarships to active MGVs and 2 $40 scholarships to the newest classes (2022, 2023, 2024). To be considered for the scholarship you must fill out the application entirely and submit it by May 15th at 5:00 pm.
    • Columbiana Garden Art Classes – If you are interested in doing a Garden Art class in Columbiana County, let Kristen know. You could do one of the Garden Art Classes that have been done in Mahoning County.
    • Stephanie Hughes shared with us that Nancy Brundage, emeritus MGV, is housebound. Nancy’s birthday is April 11th, if we want to send her a birthday card. Stephanie would also like to arrange a date, so a group of MGVs could take Nancy a birthday cake and visit with her at her house. Notify Stephanie if you want to be part of the group to visit Nancy. Nancy’s address is 64 Winona Ave. Canfield, OH 44406.
    • Marilyn McKinley’s husband passed away. There is a card for us to sign to offer condolences. If you would like to send her a card, her address is on your contact sheet.

March 13, 2025

Opening and Pledge of Allegiance: President Pam Baytos led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Committee Reports

  • Bring One Take One (Exchange Only) – Bob and Marianna Eister: Marianna announced Aug 9th as the date for this event. There is a committee meeting on June 12th @ 5:30 pm in the small classroom before the regular monthly meeting. The BOTO exchange with be moved inside if it rains. The event will be announced at the upcoming Spring Garden Workshop. Plant and Pest Clinic table and general info table will be set up as well as coffee and drinks.
  • Canfield Fair – Jim Zeleznik; Committee members will meet March 31st 5:30-6:30 in large classroom.
  • Community Outreach – Thresea Harris: The first Veggies and More tour is Monday, June 2nd at 6 pm at Flying High (Greenhouse). Other summer Monday events are in planning stage.
  • Education – Karen Gates and Stephanie Hughes: Karen said there is a spreadsheet with PowerPoint info if you need that info. A spring field trip to the lavender gardens in Ellsworth is being planned. Karen has put together a PowerPoint/Video of last year’s field trip to the Fig Tree farm and will present it after the June meeting.
  • Hospitality – Natalie Fraser and Peg Zeleznik: Peg announced there is a sign-up sheet available for the upcoming Spring Garden Workshop. Breakfast snacks and lunch desserts are requested (Lunch is being provided by the Extension Office).
