Meet the Faculty: Tom Stewart

TSS Headshot

Tom Stewart

“A Lecturer at The Ohio State University.” After hearing that title, it would be normal to make assumptions about the journey that person took to get in that position. Possible assumptions would include years of graduate school and a passion and fervor for research. However, Tom Stewart’s story is a little different.

Graduating from Ohio State in 1972 with his bachelor’s degree in communication and education, Tom went to work for the advertising company that was in charge of McDonald’s restaurants, J. Scott Corporation.

Having a passion for the broadcasting business, Tom only stayed with J. Scott agency for four years. Beginning in 1976 Tom started his broadcasting and media career as a local account executive for WBNS Radio. For the next twenty-five years, Tom stayed in the media world, with positions at WBNS Radio and WBNS-TV. At one point within that almost three decade time period, Tom served as the youngest major market radio station general manager in the United States. Another accomplishment of Tom’s was winning the right to be the exclusive radio voice of The Ohio State Buckeye Athletic Department. Through this, Ohio State football and basketball coverage became a prominent part of the radio station’s programming. Serving as general manager for both WBNS Radio and WBNS- TV, Tom helped guide the stations to dominance.

Retiring at the close of 2001 as the senior executive of WBNS, Tom pursued a long-term goal of his: teaching. Returning back to Ohio State, Tom became a lecturer in the Department of Human and Community Resource Development (now known as Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership.) Working with students for over ten years, Tom teaches courses like public speaking and public relations.

A favorite lecturer among students who have taken his class, Tom makes it a priority to connect with students and make them the reason he teaches. Outside of class and his numerous other obligations, Tom loves his wife of over 35 years, and adores spending time with his two daughters’ families, including his two grandsons.

Meet Our Faculty: Dr. Caryn Filson

Growing up in a home centered around agriculture, it’s no wonder that Dr. Caryn Filson is now a lecturer in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences at Ohio State. Dr. Filson got her start in agriculture living on a hog and grain farm in Harrison, Ohio where she spent her childhood actively showing steers, hogs and lambs in 4-H.

She graduated from Diamond Oaks Career and Technical Center in an equine science program, then proceeded to earn her bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. degrees all from Ohio State in agricultural education. Before returning to Ohio State as a lecturer, Dr. Filson taught middle school agriscience and earth science classes in Virginia for three years.

Aside from spending time with her two boys, Grady and Jasper, Dr. Filson also has an affinity for rescuing animals including two rescue dogs, Tanner and Josie, as well as two rescued bunnies from OSU animal research, Buckeye and Blitz. In her spare time, Dr. Filson loves to garden, work with livestock, go to outdoor country concerts, visit the beach, and travel to see family and friends across the state.

When asked what her “fun fact” is, it included her siblings. Three of the four siblings in her family all graduated with college degrees across the country in the same weekend. Her younger brother from Oklahoma State with his bachelor’s, her older sister from the University of Cincinnati with her master’s, and then Caryn from Ohio State with her PhD. The most impressive part? Her parents and older brother made it to all three graduations that weekend!

Meet Our Faculty: Dr. Keith Smith

Making a positive impact on his students as a professor in the Department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership, is far from the only thing that Dr. Keith Smith has given to Ohio State. For over twenty years he tirelessly served as the director of OSU Extension. Dr. Smith has also served as the associate viceOSU CFAES Dr. Keith L Smith Assoc. VP & Driector OSU Extension president for agricultural administration, and the associate dean of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences at Ohio State, just recently retiring from these positions in 2015.

A graduate from Utah State University and Iowa State University, Dr. Smith has his bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. degrees in agricultural education. Meet our Faculty: Dr. Scott Scheer

Dr. Scott Scheer, a professor in the Department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership seems to have done it all, and then some. Earning his bachelor’s degree in geology from Louisiana Tech University, and his master’s in developmental psychology from Columbia University, Teachers College, Dr. Scheer then went to the University of Delaware to earn his Ph.D. in family studies.

Before coming to The Ohio State University in 1996, Dr. Scheer spent time working as a social worker, a graduate research and teaching assistant, and an evaluation specialist. Now as a professor in ACEL, his research focuses primarily on outreach education and youth development. Dr. Scheer also advises undergraduate and graduate students alike. Moreover, he serves as the graduate studies director in ACEL and the coordinator of the community and extension education undergraduate specialization.

Dr. Scheer’s preferred mode of transportation to get to work is his scooter, however, due to Ohio’s inclement weather during the winter months, he can only do this 8 months out of the year. Aside from being a scooter enthusiast, Dr. Scheer enjoys being a family man while also loving to travel and jog.

Meet our Faculty: Dr. Susie Whittington

Earning a long list of accolades for her achievements as an author, her dedication and enthusiasm for teaching, and her unwavering service to students clearly shows that Dr. Susie Whittington is making quite the impact as a professor in the Department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership at The Ohio State University.

Having three degrees (including her Ph.D.) from The Ohio State University in Agricultural Education, it seems only fitting that Dr. Susie Whittington would want to carry out her teaching career at Ohio State. However, she did take a brief hiatus from the Buckeye-loving university when she took her first post-doctorate teaching position in 1991 at the University of Idaho in their Department of Agricultural and Extension Education. Before returning to The Buckeye State she made a detour in 1995 to The Pennsylvania State University as an Associate Professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics, Sociology, and Education. Five short years later Dr. Susie Whittington made it back to The Ohio State University, accepting a position as an Associate Professor in the Department of Human and Community Resource Development (now known as Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership), where after teaching for eleven years, she transitioned to her current position where she serves as a professor.

She also loves spending time with her family, which includes husband Dr. Pat Whittington, three daughters, and two son-in-laws.

FFA turned a shy teen to a public speaking faculty member

By Dr. Emily Buck
Professor
The Ohio State University

If anyone had looked at me when I was 12 they never would have thought I would be standing in front of people teaching everyday.

I was a shy sheep girl who kept to herself. My agriculture teacher changed all of that!

I will never forget my first state FFA convention on Ohio State’s campus. The mass of blue jackets walking around High Street, sitting in the auditorium watching as the state officers shared their retiring address and kids win awards for their dedication to agriculture. My ag teacher turned to my friend and I and said, “that will be you.” At that moment I knew I was going to be involved.

Three years later as I prepared to graduate from high school I had another memorable state convention. I can’t tell you which I am more proud of: receiving the state degree, winning the state sheep proficiency, or being elected state treasurer.

The FFA had set me up to be successful in all I did from there on out. Because of that I strive every year to help or give back to the organization that gave me so much. I was in 4-H and loved it, but FFA is what made me who I am.

The nights at FFA camp raiding the kitchen as a state officer, dancing on stage at opening session of “my” state convention, to the long drives to national convention in Kansas City, they all had an impact on me.
