ACEL is using group scheduling for all our majors to help create a collaborative advising and peer environment. We hope this will help address questions that all students have during scheduling. Individual scheduling will be available to those students who have already attended a group scheduling meeting and still have additional questions and needs. Scheduling and advising are different. Diversity, equity, and inclusion professional development workshops
The CFAES Office of Equity and Inclusion is pleased to announce that effective immediately all diversity, equity, and inclusion professional development workshops will be open to CFAES undergraduate students. Previously, workshops were available only to faculty, staff, and graduate students. The Office of Equity and Inclusion feels that this valuable resource should be available to all members of the CFAES community in order to create an inclusive environment where all people are valued and celebrated. Below is the schedule for the remaining fall workshops along with descriptions and registration links. Columbus workshops are held in the Eastman Room, 4-H Center and Wooster workshops in 126 Research Services. Lunch will be provided at all workshops.

November: Men, Women, and Everyone Else: An Exploration of Sex, Gender, and Gender Identity (Register here)
The words “sex” and “gender” are frequently used synonymously, but they actually refer to different, but related, characteristics. What is the difference between the two and what happens when they don’t align? What does it mean to be “transgender”? How do all of these concepts relate to other identities such as sexual and affectional orientations? This workshop will take a deep look into the surprisingly complex world of sex and gender and will culminate in an in-depth discussion of the diversity of trans and non-binary identities. Cap: 30 participants.

Columbus – Thursday, November 7th, 1:30-4:30 pm
Wooster – Friday, November 8th, 1:30-4:30 pm

December: Cultivating an Inclusive Environment: Recognizing and Responding to Implicit Bias (Register here)
This workshop will explore how identities, beliefs, and backgrounds shape our perceptions of other people in ways that can unconsciously and negatively impact our interactions with them. Participants will learn how to identify and empathetically respond to implicit bias in order to foster a more inclusive environment for everyone. Cap: 30 participants.

Now Open – College Scholarship Application for the 2020-2021 academic year – Priority Deadline: February 15, 2020
All students in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences are encouraged to fill out the College Scholarship Application for the 2020-21 academic year.

You will only need to fill out one application to be eligible for scholarships from the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, School of Environment and Natural Resources, and ATI/Wooster. The priority deadline for completing the application is February 15, 2020.

The simple on-line form requires you to write a short 300 word essay, list of present and previous work experience, involvement in extracurricular activities, provide details about involvement in groups. Students in the School of Environment and Natural Resources will only need to complete this application for 2020-21 as the supplemental questions are within this application. Applicants who have participated in 4-H regardless of University/College, Campus, or major are to complete this application and the additional supplemental questions when you check “Yes” on the involvement in 4-H.

This May program has students exploring the relationship between humans and their natural systems through the lens of environmental sustainability; all while traveling through stunning parks, forests and coastlines.

Panama: Through the Lens of AgriCulture, Sustainability and Diversity (April 29-May 10, 2020)
This course is designed to give students a different perspective on agriculture and other economic sectors that influence food, fiber, and fuel. Students will also have the opportunity to explore culture outside of the classroom and view, first-hand, food and production based on varying available natural resources, socioeconomic status and needs of the region and/or country.

South Africa: Exotic Animal Behavior and Welfare (April 30-May15, 2020 or May 18-June 3, 2020)
This May program takes students on a safari through parks and refuges where they study wild animal behavior and welfare by observing animals in their native habitat.

England: Evolution in Darwin’s World and ours– Entomology (May 5-16, 2020)

Agri-Pulse seeks summer 2020 internAgri-Pulse Communications is looking for an intern who is passionate about reporting on farm, food and rural policy issues and serving our growing audience.

The ideal candidate should have experience in writing, editing and broadcasting and possess knowledge of the policy issues we cover. Established contacts with lawmakers and industry sources are a plus.

The communications firm is widely considered the most influential source of farm, food and rural policy news on Capitol Hill.

The right candidate can help us expand our coverage, use a broad array of social media tools and assist with new product development.

This temporary paid internship is based in Washington, D.C. One position is open for the summer of 2019. Start and end dates are flexible, but preferably mid-May through mid-August.

Preferred qualifications:

  • A college major in English, Journalism or related degree;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Knowledge about farm, food and rural policy issues;
  • Excellent grammar skills;
  • Ability to produce video or audio news content;

Agricultural Communication and Education in the U.K.

In May and June, I traveled to England and Scotland on the Agricultural and Environmental Communication education abroad. This trip was only two weeks, but had enough experiences to last a life-time.

The part I enjoyed most about the trip was its focus on my major, agricultural communication. Our group was able to learn some key differences and similarities between the U.S. and the U.K. both in agricultural communication and agriculture in general. By learning more about my future profession in another country, I was able to have an even better understanding of global agriculture going into my senior year. I gained this awareness especially through our various industry visits.

While we were in England we visited many places and agricultural businesses, but my favorite was Farmers Weekly. Not only did the company buy us all Starbucks coffee, but also taught us a lot about what their organization does. Karl Schneider, the editor, focused the discussion mostly on where agriculture is in the U.K. now and how that affects their content. Being one of our first industry visits, it was a nice introduction to learning more about U.K. agriculture. Farmers Weekly is the number one magazine for farmers in the U.K., so the organization had a great deal of interesting insights on how to engage audiences.

Our time at the Scottish Farmer was also impactful. Although the publication was smaller than Farmers Weekly, it was interesting to have a discussion with them about their magazine. There we talked a great deal about the decline in print and strategies to combat this issue. Another interesting part of the visit was hearing about the history and how far the organization has come in the past 126 years. We were even able to see old copies of the magazine, understanding what the magazine used to contain versus what it is currently. 

This two-week adventure included tours and visits that were more focused on culture and history as well. Some of my favorite visits include Kensington Palace, the London Eye, the Roman Baths and Stonehenge. I loved the opportunity to learn so much about agriculture, while simultaneously visiting intriguing places such as these. My absolute favorite activity was walking around Edinburgh, Scotland. The historic city has a lot to offer, from shops to restaurants to its overall atmosphere. The group was also able to visit Edinburgh castle, which was also rich in history.

The Agricultural Communication and Education trip allowed me to learn more about culture and agriculture in the U.K. I had previously studied abroad in Brazil my sophomore year, but this trip was a different experience that allowed me to learn more about my major from an international perspective. From the trip, I now have a better understanding of agricultural communication in these countries and how it may, in turn, affect the U.S. I am grateful for the opportunity, and I recommend all students, ACEL or not, to apply in the future!

Diversity, equity, and inclusion professional development workshops
The CFAES Office of Equity and Inclusion is pleased to announce that effective immediately all diversity, equity, and inclusion professional development workshops will be open to CFAES undergraduate students. Previously, workshops were available only to faculty, staff, and graduate students. The Office of Equity and Inclusion feels that this valuable resource should be available to all members of the CFAES community in order to create an inclusive environment where all people are valued and celebrated. Below is the schedule for the remaining fall workshops along with descriptions and registration links. Columbus workshops are held in the Eastman Room, 4-H Center and Wooster workshops in 126 Research Services. Lunch will be provided at all workshops.

November: Men, Women, and Everyone Else: An Exploration of Sex, Gender, and Gender Identity (Register here)
The words “sex” and “gender” are frequently used synonymously, but they actually refer to different, but related, characteristics. What is the difference between the two and what happens when they don’t align? What does it mean to be “transgender”? How do all of these concepts relate to other identities such as sexual and affectional orientations? This workshop will take a deep look into the surprisingly complex world of sex and gender and will culminate in an in-depth discussion of the diversity of trans and non-binary identities. Cap: 30 participants.

Columbus – Thursday, November 7th, 1:30-4:30 pm
Wooster – Friday, November 8th, 1:30-4:30 pm

December: Cultivating an Inclusive Environment: Recognizing and Responding to Implicit Bias (Register here)
This workshop will explore how identities, beliefs, and backgrounds shape our perceptions of other people in ways that can unconsciously and negatively impact our interactions with them. Participants will learn how to identify and empathetically respond to implicit bias in order to foster a more inclusive environment for everyone. Cap: 30 participants.

Now Open – College Scholarship Application for the 2020-2021 academic year – Priority Deadline: February 15, 2020
All students in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences are encouraged to fill out the College Scholarship Application for the 2020-21 academic year.

You will only need to fill out one application to be eligible for scholarships from the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, School of Environment and Natural Resources, and ATI/Wooster. The priority deadline for completing the application is February 15, 2020.

The simple on-line form requires you to write a short 300 word essay, list of present and previous work experience, involvement in extracurricular activities, provide details about involvement in groups. Students in the School of Environment and Natural Resources will only need to complete this application for 2020-21 as the supplemental questions are within this application. Applicants who have participated in 4-H regardless of University/College, Campus, or major are to complete this application and the additional supplemental questions when you check “Yes” on the involvement in 4-H.

This May program has students exploring the relationship between humans and their natural systems through the lens of environmental sustainability; all while traveling through stunning parks, forests and coastlines.

Panama: Through the Lens of AgriCulture, Sustainability and Diversity (April 29-May 10, 2020)
This course is designed to give students a different perspective on agriculture and other economic sectors that influence food, fiber, and fuel. Students will also have the opportunity to explore culture outside of the classroom and view, first-hand, food and production based on varying available natural resources, socioeconomic status and needs of the region and/or country.

South Africa: Exotic Animal Behavior and Welfare (April 30-May15, 2020 or May 18-June 3, 2020)
This May program takes students on a safari through parks and refuges where they study wild animal behavior and welfare by observing animals in their native habitat.

England: Evolution in Darwin’s World and ours– Entomology (May 5-16, 2020)

Progressive Publishing seeks editorial internship applicants
Agricultural students with journalism or communications training are encouraged to apply for Progressive Publishing’s 2020 editorial internship program. Applications are due Dec. 20, 2019.

Editorial interns will be responsible for writing feature and news articles for one or more of the company’s agricultural magazines, as well as copyediting and photography. The internship may be tailored to those with particular skill sets, including design, web content, social media and marketing. The company’s family of publications includes Progressive DairyProgressive Dairy-CanadaProgressive Cattle and Progressive Forage.

Applicants should maintain a 3.0 or greater GPA in college coursework and have previous writing experience. Students who have completed coursework for their junior or senior year are preferable. Students who will have completed their undergraduate degree by spring 2020 are also encouraged to apply. A dairy or agricultural background is not required, but experience and knowledge of the industry is preferred.

The internship is based at the company’s headquarters in Jerome, Idaho. It is a paid internship, and assistance in locating housing and arranging transportation will be provided. Start and end dates for the internship are flexible to accommodate class schedules and graduation dates. Typical internships last eight to 10 weeks.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, resume, three references and examples of published work that relates to their field of expertise. Suggested amounts and categories of published works are: five articles, five ad designs or layouts, three marketing campaigns or three designed websites. Materials for class assignments will be accepted if the applicant does not have examples of published work.

Agri-Pulse seeks summer 2020 internAgri-Pulse Communications is looking for an intern who is passionate about reporting on farm, food and rural policy issues and serving our growing audience.

The ideal candidate should have experience in writing, editing and broadcasting and possess knowledge of the policy issues we cover. Established contacts with lawmakers and industry sources are a plus.

The communications firm is widely considered the most influential source of farm, food and rural policy news on Capitol Hill.

The right candidate can help us expand our coverage, use a broad array of social media tools and assist with new product development.

This temporary paid internship is based in Washington, D.C. One position is open for the summer of 2019. Start and end dates are flexible, but preferably mid-May through mid-August.

Preferred qualifications:

ACEL is using group scheduling for all our majors to help create a collaborative advising and peer environment. We hope this will help address questions that all students have during scheduling. ACEL Photo Shoot for Past (and present!) 4-H and FFA members
The Department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership is hosting a photo shoot on Tuesday, October 15, from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. for ACEL students who are past (or present) 4-H and FFA members. These photos will be used during upcoming social media campaigns to highlight how 4-H and FFA may have played a role in a student’s decision to choose his/her major or Ohio State.

Please do your best to arrive on time (or a little before, if possible). We will meet in the lobby of the Agricultural Administration building (beside the coffee shop). All pictures will be outside, weather permitting.

Agricultural students with journalism or communications training are encouraged to apply for Progressive Publishing’s 2020 editorial internship program. Applications are due Dec. 20, 2019.

Editorial interns will be responsible for writing feature and news articles for one or more of the company’s agricultural magazines, as well as copyediting and photography. The internship may be tailored to those with particular skill sets, including design, web content, social media and marketing. The company’s family of publications includes Progressive DairyProgressive Dairy-CanadaProgressive Cattle and Progressive Forage.

Applicants should maintain a 3.0 or greater GPA in college coursework and have previous writing experience. Students who have completed coursework for their junior or senior year are preferable. Students who will have completed their undergraduate degree by spring 2020 are also encouraged to apply. A dairy or agricultural background is not required, but experience and knowledge of the industry is preferred.

The internship is based at the company’s headquarters in Jerome, Idaho. It is a paid internship, and assistance in locating housing and arranging transportation will be provided. Start and end dates for the internship are flexible to accommodate class schedules and graduation dates. Typical internships last eight to 10 weeks.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, resume, three references and examples of published work that relates to their field of expertise. Suggested amounts and categories of published works are: five articles, five ad designs or layouts, three marketing campaigns or three designed websites. Materials for class assignments will be accepted if the applicant does not have examples of published work.

News Release: Ohio State students successful at national critique and contest

The Ohio State University chapter of the Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow (ACT) participated in the 2019 National Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow (NACT) Critique & Contest. An award ceremony was held during the Ag Media Summit in Minneapolis, July 29-30, 2019.

“Ohio State ACT was happy to encourage more participation in NACT Critique and Contest last year. We plan to continue to motivate members to enter this coming year, and give them opportunities at club meetings to submit,” said Marlee Stollar, Ohio State ACT club president. “Our club has already secured more speakers at meetings this year and is looking forward to increasing professional development for members. We are proud of our club members for their work last year in the contest but are also excited for the year to come.”

In addition to participating in the NACT Critique & Contest, Ohio State ACT host several events throughout the academic year to promote the agriculture industry and develop members’ skills. The club hosts Farmer’s Share, an event held at the Waterman Agricultural and Natural Resources Laboratory to educate Ohio State students, faculty and staff about the agriculture industry. A Night for Young Professionals is also organized by Ohio State, an event that allows students to network with industry leaders and grow their professional skills.

Many ACT students study agricultural communication or have an interest in promoting the agriculture industry. The agricultural communication major prepares students to plan, develop, and implement a communication campaign, using visual media, writing and editing. Students also study crisis communication, graphic design, marketing, and journalism so they can spread the word about agriculture. ACEL is using group scheduling for all our majors to help create a collaborative advising and peer environment. We hope this will help address questions that all students have during scheduling. Individual scheduling will be available to those students who have already attended a group scheduling meeting and still have additional questions and needs. Scheduling and advising are different. This course is designed to give students a different perspective on agriculture and other economic sectors that influence food, fiber, and fuel. Students will also have the opportunity to explore culture outside of the classroom and view, first-hand, food and production based on varying available natural resources, socioeconomic status and needs of the region and/or country.

South Africa: Exotic Animal Behavior and Welfare (April 30-May15, 2020 or May 18-June 3, 2020)
This May program takes students on a safari through parks and refuges where they study wild animal behavior and welfare by observing animals in their native habitat.

Apply to Join Towers Agricultural Honorary
Towers Agricultural Honorary is currently accepting applications for membership for the Autumn 2019 semester. It was founded in 1952 to establish an organization to honor individuals in agricultural fields demonstrating high levels of scholarship, strong leadership skills, and high moral character. Any student in The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences who is enrolled in at least their third academic semester, has earned an accumulative point hour ratio of 3.00, and has proven himself/herself outstanding in at least one extracurricular activity is eligible for membership. Throughout the year, Towers’ members are involved in a variety of group activities and events such as our Induction Ceremony, quarterly blood drives, and our Member/Mentor recognition reception.

Info Sessions 
Are you interested in applying to be an Ambassador for the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES)?  To learn more about what the CFAES ambassador team is all about, attend one of the information sessions listed below.  This is an optional activity to learn more about the application and interview process.  We will have current ambassadors in attendance to share their experiences.  We hope to see you there!

Suicide Prevention Services Hotline Seeking Volunteers
The Suicide Prevention Hotline is available every day to help individuals in our community who are in crisis, having thoughts of suicide, or need a good listener. Volunteers are needed in order to provide this service to the Franklin County community 24/7, 365 days a year.

As a volunteer, you will be trained in communication skills, problem-solving, risk assessment, and crisis intervention. You will also learn about local resources and programs that can help our callers find treatment options, food assistance, and more.

Our next training begins on September 25. To volunteer or for more information, call the Coordinator at 614-299-6600 ext. 2073, the Assistant Coordinator at ext. 2026, or email us at sps@ncmhs.org.

Panama: Through the Lens of AgriCulture, Sustainability and Diversity (April 29-May 10, 2020)
This course is designed to give students a different perspective on agriculture and other economic sectors that influence food, fiber, and fuel. Students will also have the opportunity to explore culture outside of the classroom and view, first-hand, food and production based on varying available natural resources, socioeconomic status and needs of the region and/or country.

OSU Student Farm – 2 student worker positions available
The Ohio State Student Farm was started back in 2017 under the mission of creating a learning, living laboratory dedicated to restorative agriculture, social justice, student research, and growth. Located on Waterman Farms, we grow using organic methods on 4-acres. In our production we have mixed vegetables, an agroforestry plot, cover crops, bees and pollinator habitat, and student growing plots. Each week we hold a market on campus, weekly meetings with the Student Growing Collaborative (Thursday 6-7pm), and weekly workdays (Sunday 10am-12pm).
