ACEL Graduation Breakfast
On Sunday, May 8, 2016, graduating students and their families are invited to attend a breakfast hosted by ACEL Alumni. Breakfast will be served from 8-10am, so join at a time convenient for you and your guests. RSVP by emailing the number in your party to acel@osu.edu.CFAES Cultural Exploration April 30
Join CFAES faculty, staff, and students for a cultural exploration on April 30. We will travel to the National Underground Railroad Museum and Freedom Center followed by an afternoon at Jungle Jim’s International Market.

There is no cost but you must register here and provide a $5.00 seat deposit. For those on Columbus Campus you can drop it off to the front desk in room 100 of the Agricultural Administration Building. For Wooster Campus you can drop it off in room 128 Skou Hall. We are providing transportation from Wooster to Columbus to the Freedom Center and Jungle Jim’s.

Study Abroad

First Year Only Study Abroad
This once in a lifetime opportunity will give freshmen a first-hand experience with Nicaraguan culture, the global economy and environmental issues. Students will stay in hotels and with a Nicaraguan family for one night to explor cultural differences on a famililar, day-in-the-life level. Planned tours include food production, cultural and natural sites and animal health facilities in Nicaragua. Presentations will range from economics to the cultural significance of the environment. Ohio Pork Council Scholarship Deadline Quickly Approaching 
​COLUMBUS, OH – There are numerous scholarship opportunities available to college students interested in the pork industry. Students are reminded that applications for OPPC, OPCW and Dick Isler scholarships are due April 29.​

The Ohio Pork Council is currently offering scholarships, ranging from $500 to $1000 per individual. Students entering their freshman, sophomore, junior or senior year in college are encouraged to apply. Applicants, or their parents, must be actively involved in the pork industry. Children of pork industry employees, managers and contract growers are eligible.In honor of 42 years of service to Ohio’s pork industry, as executive vice president of the Ohio Pork Council, a scholarship fund recognizes Dick Isler and provides an annual scholarship of at $1,000 to college students pursuing a degree in agriculture.

The Ohio Pork Council Women will also be offering $500 scholarships to college students in their junior year or higher. To obtain an application for these scholarships, please visit: OhioPork.org. Applications for OPPC, OPCW and Dick Isler scholarships are due April 29.

Ohio 4-H – Educational Assistants
Ohio 4-H Youth Development, is looking for 4-H Educational Assistants to work at the Ohio State Fair from July 15 through August7, 2016.

Assistants will: 1. Provide assistance in cleaning and painting of the 4-H area in the Youth Discovery Center prior to the fair’s opening. 2. Provide assistance to 4-H Assistant Superintendents in helping with set-up and conducting their respective 4-H educational activities/events. 3. Assist with daily event/activity registration. 4. Provide information on the Ohio 4-H Youth Development Program to fair visitors. 5. Assist with awards ceremonies as needed.

Summer Job in CFAES Dean’s Office
We are looking for one student worker for the summer semester (May through August – until Fall semester begins) to manage the front desk and reception area of the Dean’s suite. Flexible hours between M-F 8:00 am – 4:30 pm. Great opportunity for students to get to know the leadership of our college and work closely with them.

Responsibilities include:

  • Running the reception desk of 140 Ag Admin – greeting visitors, answering questions, manning the suites main phone, etc.
  • Managing the suite’s conference rooms – 140N and 140G

Mental Health Matters Week is a project dedicated to reducing the stigma surrounding mental health on campus.  To accomplish this goal, an array of events have been scheduled.  One of these events is an educational session that will be taking place on Wednesday, April 20th.  This event is taking place at Independence Hall from 8:00 – 9:30pm.  Speakers will include CCS Director Micky Sharma, Ahmed Hosni from the Collegiate Recovery Community and Matthew Fullen from the OSU Suicide Prevention Program.  The goal of this presentation is to educate students on a variety of mental health issues including depression, drug abuse, suicide prevention and campus resources.  Please contact Stefan Schuster at Schuster.135@osu.edu if your organization would be interested in attending this event.

Join MentalHealthMatters week April 18-22 to help decrease stigma around mental health!

On Monday (4/18), watch for volunteers from 11am-5pm and a huge group photo at 4:45pm on the South Oval.  On Wednesday (4/20), attend an educational panel with campus experts at 8pm in Independence Hall. On Friday (4/22) enjoy a free cookout from 11am-3pm on the South Oval.

Buckeye Student Riders Donut Ride
Think you can master a donut eating contest while competing in a bike ride?  Join Team Buckeye Student Riders for our first ever Donut Ride on Friday, April 22nd from 4p-7p at Fred Beekman Park.  Registration is just $10 for all you can eat donuts and a great time!  All bikes are welcome!  Want to join but don’t have a bike?  Rent from us for just an additional $2!

We also need volunteers to help with the event!  We need volunteers to help with our donut stations and to count how many donuts each rider eats as well as to time the riders.  If you are available to come volunteer anytime between 3:30p and 7p we would really appreciate the help!  You will receive free Team Buckeye swag for helping us out and we would love to collaborate with your organization in the future!

Girls on the Run 5K – May 21
Looking for volunteer opportunities for yourself or your student organization in the spring?  Girls on the Run Franklin County Spring 5K needs help! Volunteers will be assigned to various tasks such as pre-race activities, course marshalling, passing out water, etc.  The race is on Saturday, May 21st at the Columbus Commons, 160 S High St, Columbus, OH 43215.  Pre-race activities begin at 8:00 AM and the race starts at 9:00 AM.

Faulkner named outstanding senior in CFAES

Shelby Faulkner

Shelby Faulkner, of Urbana, Ohio, has been selected as one of 20 students to win the 2016 Outstanding Senior Award from the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University.

Award winners are selected via a competitive process, and are evaluated on excellence and demonstrated personal and professional growth in the areas of academic scholarship, student organization leadership, and involvement in the university and the broader community.

Faulkner, the daughter of Lenny and Zoe Faulkner, is a graduating senior in agriscience education. In her time at Ohio State, Faulkner has been involved within the college and her community, residing as president of the Agricultural Education Society and a founding member of her local FFA chapter Alumni association. She also completed internships with Monsanto and The National FFA Organization. After graduation, Faulkner intends to be a high school agriculture education teacher.

The Outstanding Senior Awards were presented at the CFAES Recognition Banquet on April 7, 2016.

Jordan Bonham

Jordan Bonham, of Washington Courthouse, Ohio, has been selected as one of 20 students to win the 2016 Outstanding Senior Award from the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University.

Award winners are selected via a competitive process, and are evaluated on excellence and demonstrated personal and professional growth in the areas of academic scholarship, student organization leadership, and involvement in the university and the broader community.

Bonham, the daughter of Barry and Wendy Bonham, is a graduating senior in agricultural communication. She was actively involved in the Sigma Alpha Professional Agricultural Sorority, serving as a two-term president, and Alpha Zeta Partners Honorary, through which she completed a 6-week study abroad to Brazil. Bonham was also involved with Agriculture Future of America. After graduation, she will be working as a Farm Marketer for Cargill located in Albion, Nebraska.

Demi Snider

Demi Snider, of Sycamore, Ohio, was named one of 20 students to win the 2016 Outstanding Senior Award from the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University.

Award winners are selected via a competitive process, and are evaluated on excellence and demonstrated personal and professional growth in the areas of academic scholarship, student organization leadership, and involvement in the university and the broader community.

Snider, the daughter of Dave and DeDe Snider, is a graduating senior in agricultural communication. She was a member of Collegiate Cattlewomen of Ohio State and Collegiate Young Farmers. During her time at OSU, she served as an Ohio Beef Ambassador and a National Beef Ambassador where she traveled the state and country educating consumers and promoting beef.

After graduation, Snider hopes to develop a youth agricultural education program within county extension offices.

Brooke Rieke Schanowski, of Winfield, Illinois, was named one of the 2016 Outstanding Senior Award recipients from the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University.

Award winners are selected via a competitive process, and are evaluated on excellence and demonstrated personal and professional growth in the areas of academic scholarship, student organization leadership, and involvement in the university and the broader community.

Schanowski is the daughter of Mark and Susan Schanowski. She will earn her degree in agricultural communication and after graduation she plans to become an on-air meteorologist.

Rieke Schanowski’s notable experience during her time at Ohio State include serving as a college ambassador, a University Peer Mentor, participating in the Media, Marketing, & Communications Scholars Program, and working as an On-Air Meteorologist for Lantern TV.

Devon Alexander

Devon Alexander, of Anna, Ohio, has been selected as one of 20 students to win the 2016 Outstanding Senior Award from the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University.

Award winners are selected via a competitive process, and are evaluated on excellence and demonstrated personal and professional growth in the areas of academic scholarship, student organization leadership, and involvement in the university and the broader community.

Alexander, the son of Jeff and Lori Alexander, is a graduating senior in agricultural communication. He has been active in Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow, the College Student Council, Buckeyethon, College Ambassadors, and FarmHouse Fraternity. Alexander was on Ohio State’s Homecoming Court for 2015 and interned with the Office of Student Life.

Agriscience Fair Judges Needed
We need pre-service teachers, administrators and friends from industry to serve as judges for the Ohio FFA Agriscience Fair on May 5, 2016 during State Convention at the Ohio Expo State Fairgrounds in Columbus. We have a particular need for judges to pre-score written reports, which can be done from home. To sign up for judging, please complete the volunteer form. Do you love Ohio State? Have you had a positive experience as a current student that you can share with prospective students? Consider volunteering for goBuckeye, an event attended by over 1,000 admitted students and their families on Friday, April 15. Students who attend goBuckeye are making their final decision about where to attend college, and we hope it is Ohio State!

We need dozens of student volunteers throughout the day to help interact with this huge group of campus visitors. Student volunteers will greet guests, help with directions, and staff a variety of campus buildings and information booths to answer questions and share their Ohio State experience.

To volunteer, visit go.osu.edu/gobuckeye16 by Wednesday, April 6 to indicate your availability and preferences. Volunteers will be notified via email of their volunteer assignments by Friday, April 8.

On Tuesday, April 12 at 3:30 in the auditorium of the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center. Kavin’s talk is titled “Science Communication is a Marathon, Not a Sprint.” Doors will open at 3:15 with a reception to immediately follow her presentation. All are welcome to attend.

*About the speaker: Kavin is an author, public speaker and science activist writing about health, medicine, genomics, agriculture and food. She’s the co-Executive Director of international pro-science, pro-biotech movement March Against Myths, and co-author of “The Fear Babe: Shattering Vani Hari’s Glass House,” a book discussing popular food misconceptions and why they proliferate in the face of mountains of evidence against them.

LGBTQ + Community Open Discussion and Conversation
Do you identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community? If so, please join us on Thursday,
April 14 from 6-8pm in the Agricultural Administration Building Room 109. Pizza and other refreshments will be provided!
A group of LGBTQ+ students from within the college will be meeting to discuss the LGBT experience, and ways to improve CFAES for your specific needs. The results of the discussion will not include any identifying information about you, and used only to formulate recommendations for college administrators. Maintaining a safe and confidential space is highly important to the coordinators, and instances of homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, racism, etc. will not be tolerated. Please RSVP to murray.471@osu.edu if you are able to join us.

Volunteers Needed for Girls on the Run 5K
Looking for volunteer opportunities for yourself or your student organization in the spring?  Girls on the Run Franklin County Spring 5K needs help! Volunteers will be assigned to various tasks such as pre-race activities, course marshalling, passing out water, etc.  The race is on Saturday, May 21st at the Columbus Commons, 160 S High St, Columbus, OH 43215.  Pre-race activities begin at 8:00 AM and the race starts at 9:00 AM.
