Check out some of the wonderful things our advising colleagues have done this past month! Thank you to each of you for all of your hard work and dedication to the students in your areas and OSU!

  • Matt Ralph
    • Matt is an awesome advisor and colleague. He is always willing to jump in to help on projects or provide back-up to other advisors in our office. Recently, one of our advisors was out so Matt stepped in and helped resolve some urgent issues for some of her students that came up during her absence. Matt can always be relied on and often goes above and beyond for his students! I’m thankful to have a great colleague in him! Go Matt!”
  • Joanna Spanos
    • Joanna repeatedly goes above and beyond to help students and staff alike during tough transitions. In addition to taking on new role responsibilities, she has been training multiple new Advisors, filling in advising roles for other departments when needed, running the Peer Mentor Program for Honors, all while supporting her own student caseload. We just KNOW that Joanna is constantly getting pinged with off-the-cuff questions, but she never lets it show. Her personality and quick jokes have a positive effect on her team members.”

  • Caitlin Burden
    • Caitlin has gone above and beyond in creating and updating an incredibly helpful detailed spreadsheet for Math Advising that allows us to see all variables related to the thousands of seats offered in the Math Department each term. This helpful tool is used to modify class offerings where possible so that more students are accommodated as early as possible within staffing and room constraints. Thanks Caitlin for being the Tech guru for Math Advising.”
  • Mary Kay Pohlschneider
    • Mary Kay is great! She gives helpful life advice, and you can talk to her about anything.”

  • Fran Bowes

  • Hillary Carter
    • Hillary is extraordinary at building rapport with her students. Among other things she is a licensed counselor and has a high level of expertise in applying her skills to her advising. She is our student-athlete advisor extraordinaire in University Exploration, she is a major contributor to ACADAOS and she consistently steps up to needs on our team. Hillary is awesome!”
  • Ryan Mouncey
    • Ryan is one of the unsung heroes in our office. He regularly checks in on his colleagues to see how they are doing, and does his work without making a big fuss about anything – while quietly putting out fires, helping train new advisors, and helping with any coordinating or administrative tasks he can. And oh yeah, he’s also a great advisor! We have an awesome staff over here, and Ryan is one of our rocks – always there, ready and able to help.”
  • Amy Selby
    • Amy cares deeply about each of her students. She handles a variety of needs and attitudes with empathy and professionalism. She excels working with difficult situations and it is not uncommon for students to come into a session feeling frustrated, but by the end of the appointment, they leave feeling empowered and motivated. Amy puts in a lot of extra time and effort tracking down answers and communicating with students to make sure their needs are taken care of and that their questions are answered. She also goes the extra mile to help other advisors and help new advisors learn the trade.”

  • Jessica Baer-Graves

  • Trish Jefferson
    • Trish has been so helpful with scheduling many visits/appointments for prospective student-athletes this fall. We’re all a little rusty with in-person campus visits, but not Trish! She hit the ground running, offered awesome meetings and open houses for prospective students and parents, and communicated updates in a very timely manner. We appreciate you, Trish!”
  • Alissa Kasmer
    • “Alissa is always happy to help with an advising question and if she doesn’t know she digs and finds the answer. She is deeply kind and cares so much about everyone around her. She consistently goes above and beyond to help and has such a positive outlook. She looks out for her students and her fellow advisers. Even with staffing changes in her own office, she pushes through to support those around her.”
  • Margaret Nevrekar
    • “Margaret is an excellent academic advisor. Not only does she bring her expertise and calm and caring demeanor into each student appointment, this fall she is also … [deep breath] teaching Survey, stepping up to learn to begin running Exploration’s end-of-term processes, teaching EXP 2000 in Session 2, serving on USAC, serving as EXP’s OnCourse ambassador, running EXP’s probation workshop and served on our interview committee for a new hire and probably more that I am leaving out. She is awesome and we appreciate her!!”
  • Lucy Omar
    • “Lucy has gone above and beyond this semester in multiple ways. With multiple new members of the team, Lucy has been a patient teacher, mentor, and advocate, and with her new first year students, Lucy has shown incredible dedication to making sure that their transition to on-campus learning and Ohio State in general has gone smoothly.”
  • Rebecca Sallade
    • “Rebecca used her background in public health to put together a presentation and resource list on mental health and self care, and is in the midst of presenting it to 13 different survey classes. This is in addition to learning all of the nuances of the advising job (she only started in August!) and working to make connections with her students.”

September 2021 Advisor of the Month

Check out some of the wonderful things our advising colleagues have done this past month! Thank you to each of you for all of your hard work and dedication to the students in your areas and OSU!

  • Nicole Vangas and Kathryn Dove
    • Nicole and Kathryn have beautifully coordinated our hybrid EXP NFYS Survey efforts this fall.
Nicole worked with returning students to recruit them as Peer Mentors for the class to ensure that our NFYS students have excellent role models and points of connection at a university where our students can sometimes feel lost. She has worked with other units on campus to coordinate our weekly lectures to ensure that students are equipped with the best knowledge about campus resources and majors.
Kathryn is our Carmen guru. She has managed the online content and presented it in a way that is clear, concise, and easy to use for all students. She effortlessly navigates and troubleshoots any issues that arise, which truly eases the load for those of who are not so tech-savvy!
Together, they have created centralized resources and supports for advisors to utilize while teaching. Thank you both for all of your efforts in creating such a user-friendly (for students and staff) Survey experience!”
  • Jeanne Mauriocourt
    • Jeanne transitioned to an advising role at the Mansfield campus in SP21—what a crazy time to get trained and learn about how OSU advising works! She has done an amazing job at whatever we throw at her and is quickly streamlining and simplifying everything she can to make us as efficient as possible. I am thrilled that she is part of our team.”
  • Heather Saling
    • Heather is a complete ROCKSTAR and totally revamped our honors processes in the College of Pharmacy. She spoke with folks in other units to do some bench marking, created an honors contract for College of Pharmacy students, and developed a process that we can utilize to help students stay on track with and better understand the honors requirements. We have put this new process into use already this semester, and it has been so helpful. Thank you Heather!”
  • Athena Yiamouyiannis
    • “Athena is tireless in support of her students in Actuarial Science, and an advocate for her staff in math advising. She makes sure that our team is on-point and has the resources we need to help our advisees and the university community.”
