August 2024 Advisor of the Month

Check out some of the wonderful things our advising colleagues have done to wrap up summer and get autumn semester off to a great start! Thank you to each of you for all of your hard work and dedication to the students in your areas and OSU!

  • Louise Hall
    • It’s mid-August and a new freshman decides he wants to change majors to ECE. Nothing is open! However, the student reached out to Louise, and she had a new schedule put together to better support the new major within just a few hours. She is a rock star!
  • Alissa Kasmer
    • I was emailing with a new international freshman about getting started with OSU and next steps in regards to class choice. The student indicated they no longer wanted to pursue the major and wanted to change. I reached out to Alissa explaining the desire to change to one of her majors. The same day she responded, including a schedule for the student to fit the new plan. She has also emailed the student with more details that same day. I appreciated her willingness to jump right in and help the student have the best schedule and start with OSU possible.”
    • “Unwavering support and fiercely strong advocacy for her students!”
  • Yeri McClain
    • “Yeri has been at the university for several years and started in the TAG office where she helped out various offices around campus. She then transitioned to EHE in 2022 and has been an amazing asset ever since. During her time with EHE, she has created an ‘Advising Resource Guide’ for all of our students to utilize and this is a one stop shop for a ton of FAQ’s, program specific requirements, 4-year sample plans, etc. She has also been amazing at utilizing OnCourse and the different functions it offers and sharing those tips/tricks with her team. To grow her knowledge further, she went through the OnCourse Ambassador training last year as well. It is so fun to watch Yeri think proactively for ways the staff can do things better and to help her students be successful. I know her students and colleagues in EHE and around the university greatly rely on her and are so thankful for her expertise!”
  • Stephanie Rinehart
    • Stephanie did an awesome job planning orientation for the College of Engineering. Even the days with lots of students were manageable due to her excellent planning and communication.”
  • Lindsay Tolchin
    • I have worked with Lindsay for 11 years. She is truly an outstanding person and advisor. More recently, Lindsay has expanded her responsibilities to include advising students through to graduation, taking on a whole new role while continuing to excel in her previous duties. In addition, Lindsay masterminded and launched an Industry Mentorship Program, connecting our current students with alumni and industry leaders. One of the most significant concerns voiced by our Biomedical Engineering students at OSU is the lack of departmental support for industry partnerships. Lindsay tackled this challenge head-on, creating an incredible new opportunity for our students. Lindsay’s program was highlighted as a program strength during our accreditation review!! Lindsay built this Industry Mentorship Program from the ground up—recruiting alumni and industry partners, promoting the program to students, pairing participants, and managing the entire process. Lindsay’s dedication and drive to enhance the experience of BME students are truly inspirational.”
  • Kim Wickham
    • “Kim is such an amazingly dedicated and supportive advisor! As a member of TAG, she has assisted many different units in times of need and always does so with the most infectious positive attitude and demeanor. Kim is quick to jump into new tasks, learn new degrees/programs, and is always eager and ready to meet with students. Kim has recently been assisting in Extended Education and her help has been invaluable with assisting in our peak enrollment times when students are so insistent on speaking with someone right away! No matter what, I know if Kim is assisting a student that they will get the best Advising experience that OSU has to offer with the greatest amount of care and compassion included!”
  • David Zach
    • I have been emailing with a new international freshman about getting started with OSU. We started an autumn semester schedule via email, then had a zoom meeting to finalize everything. During the zoom meeting, we realized he confused the major names. He really wanted Physics. I reached out to David to inquire if he would help the student create a better schedule geared toward Physics. Within a couple of hours David responded and was working with the student to make the changes needed. I appreciate how quickly he responded in with such a positive attitude about working with this student.”
