Apply for the Muskingum County 4-H Scholarship

Since 2015, the Muskingum County 4-H Committee has awarded scholarships to recognize 4-H members and alumni for their achievements. In 2020, a minimum of two $500 scholarships will be awarded at the 4-H Kick-Off.

Applicants must:

  • be a current 4-H Member or alumni of Muskingum County 4-H;
  • be a current year graduating high school senior, or equivalent of a college freshman or sophomore (proof of equivalent in a home school program by the end of the current school year is acceptable);
  • be active in 4-H for the previous three (3) consecutive years;
  • have a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale based on the most recently completed semester;
  • plan to attend (or currently attending) any post-secondary educational institution.

Ohio 4-H Scholarship Application Available

Ohio 4-H recognizes and rewards individual excellence, whether it is in project work, leadership, citizenship or community service. Ohio 4-H Scholarships were established in 1976 in order to help young people become self-directing, productive and contributing members of society.

There are currently 36 statewide 4-H scholarships being offered.  The scholarship application can be completed online. Applications are must be completed and submitted online by February 15.

Camp First-Time Counselor Meeting – January 2, 6-8:30 p.m.

First-time camp counselors will meet at the Extension Office.

Ohio Fair Managers Association Junior Fair Day – January 4

Registered Junior Fair Board members will travel to the Ohio Fair Managers Conference at the Columbus Convention Center.

4-H CARTEENS Program – January 9

4-H CARTEENS takes place at the Muskingum County Juvenile Court. Youth interested in becoming 4-H CARTEENS volunteer presenters should contact the Extension Office for details.

Mandatory Volunteer Training – January 11, 10 a.m.-12 noon

The Muskingum County 4-H program requires ALL returning volunteers to participate in one Mandatory Volunteer Training annually to remain an approved 4-H volunteer.  This includes committee and camp volunteers. This training is not for new volunteer applicants. We will be offering three opportunities for volunteers to complete this requirement. All trainings will take place at Rolling Plains United Methodist Church. No RSVP necessary.

If you are a 4-H alumni, we plan to capture short video testimonials about how your 4-H experiences contributed to your adult success. If you are willing to be part of the project, Trevor will record from 5:15-5:45 p.m. the nights of Mandatory Volunteer Training and 9:15-9:45 a.m. on January 11.

Extension Advisory Committee – January 13, 6:30 p.m.

Extension Advisory Committee will meet at the Extension Office.

State Fair Steer Registration Deadline – January 15

Submissions must be RECEIVED at the Ohio State Fair by January 15.

New Volunteer Applications Due – January 15, 4:30 p.m.

Applications can be picked up in our office or downloaded from our website at:  4-H Community Club Program>Volunteer Resources.

The new volunteer selection process requires successful completion of an application, background check, interview and orientation session. All parts of the process must be completed before an applicant receives approval.

Junior Leaders Officer Installation & Family/Advisor Potluck – January 20

Club Volunteers are invited to join Junior Leader members and their families as they kick off the 2020 year at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.

Junior Camp counselors and staff will meet at the Extension Office. Campbassadors will meet at 5:15 p.m.

State 4-H Horse Volunteer Training Session – January 25, 9 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Dr. Kimberly Cole will host an update for 4-H Horse Volunteers at the Ohio 4-H Center. Registration is due January 15.

Junior Fair Board will meet at the Extension Office.

New Volunteer Orientation – January 28, 10 a.m.-12 noon

New 4-H Club volunteers must attend one of two orientation sessions offered, January 28 and February 5.

Club Paperwork Due – January 31, 4:30 p.m.

Each 4-H Club must submit the following in order to receive their 2020 enrollment information (Organizational Club Packet, Muskingum County 4-H Family Handbooks, 4HOnline Family Email List), which will be available January 15. Family Guides can be picked up earlier than that date if needed.

You will need to download the form and save it to your computer. Open the file from the saved location using Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader. Visit the Adobe website to download Adobe Reader for free. Failure to follow this steps may result in an error message when opening the document. 

    • Year-End Bank Statement (must include December 31 in statement date)

Club Audit Paperwork Due – January 31, 4:30 p.m.

Clubs that received an Audit Notification Letter from the Extension Office in November must submit documentation by January 31.

Purebred Steer Registration Papers Due – January 31, 4:30 p.m.

Youth who did not submit a copy of their purebred steer’s registration paper at weigh-in in December must submit this paperwork by January 31 or the steer will be placed in Crossbred class. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Returning Volunteer Background Check Deadline – January 31, 4:30 p.m.

Volunteers who are required to complete a background check by January 31, 2020 to continue volunteer service in 2020 were sent a letter from our office in October 2019. The Volunteer Fingerprint Background Procedure provides all necessary information to complete the background check requirement and enables volunteers to request reimbursement for their background check from The Ohio State University.

Extended Deadline to Join Junior Leaders AND 13 Year Olds Can Now Join!

As a member of Junior Leaders, 4-H teens have the opportunity to participate in leadership development beyond their club. The group meets several times per year at various locations throughout the county and state with a focus on career opportunities, leadership, citizenship and developing relationships among its members. Members must be at least age 13 by January 1, 2020.

Junior Leaders is a great place to start getting involved in 4-H teen leadership opportunities!

Advisors are Dorothy Montgomery, James & Susan McDonald and Lisa Marshall.

Complete the one page enrollment form and submit to Susan McDonald by January 1.

Location: Clay Gardens Place Retirement Home, 3784 Frazeysburg Rd., Zanesville (Across from Hobby Lobby)

5:00 p.m. Current 2019 officers meet at Clay Gardens to nominate a slate of 2020 officers.

6:00 p.m. Other members arrive at Clay Gardens to Christmas Carol with residents.

                      Elect officers after caroling in their meeting room.

7:00 p.m. Head to Pizza Cottage for dinner and white elephant gift exchange.

To do:

  • Please bring a white elephant gift for exchange
  • (A white elephant gift is amusing, impractical and has little to no value.)
  • Bring $5 for dinner.
  •   Let a current officer know if you would like to be nominated for a 2020 officer.
