HKUST position in digital humanities

The Division of Humanities of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) invites applications for a tenure-track position in the discipline of Digital Humanities with an expected start date of July 2, 2025. The position is at the rank of Assistant Professor. Exceptional candidates at the Associate or Full Professor level will also be considered.

We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in AI applications in the humanities, dedicated to pioneering research and teaching in this dynamic area. The candidate is expected to:

  • Engage in cutting-edge research projects in Digital Humanities.

HKUST position in digital media/film

The Division of Humanities of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is searching for suitable candidates to fill a tenure-track faculty position in the discipline of Digital Media/Film with an expected start date of July 2, 2025. The position is at the rank of Assistant Professor. Exceptional candidates at the Associate or Full Professor level will also be considered.

The Division is especially interested in scholars whose teaching and research address the intersections of media theory, digital technology, and culture, with a preference for candidates whose work approaches Asia from a transnational or comparative framework. The Greenberg-Starr Department of Chinese invites applicants for a tenure-track position in Chinese language, literature, and culture to begin in fall 2025. Candidates may be specialists in any historical era and any genre of Chinese literature or other form of Chinese cultural production, but priority will be given to candidates who can teach courses on traditional Chinese literature and culture, including poetry, prose, and drama, as well as topical courses not confined to a single historical period. Candidates with experience and demonstrated success teaching Chinese language, literature, and culture to undergraduate students are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants must have the Ph.D. in hand or expected by September 2025. Appointment is expected to be at the rank of Assistant Professor. Candidates must be committed to high quality undergraduate education, including language education and the mentoring of a diverse student population, and they also must be willing to dedicate themselves to participation in a department with a tradition of teamwork and team teaching. In each fall and spring semester the new colleague will typically teach 1 Mandarin language course and 1 course in English on Chinese literature or culture. In some semesters the new colleague may also be asked to teach a 1st- or 2nd-year Chinese drill class. Texas A&M associate prof position

The Department of English and the Department of Global Languages and Cultures, in the College of Arts and Sciences, at Texas A&M University invite applicants for a full-time 9-month joint appointment as a tenured Associate Professor of Asian and Asian American Studies, to begin in Fall 2025.

Colgate position

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at Colgate University invites applications for a tenure-stream position in Chinese at the level of assistant professor, beginning fall semester 2025. A Ph.D. in hand or near completion and native or near native command of both Chinese and English are required. The area of specialization is pre-twentieth-century Chinese literature and culture. The successful candidate will be expected to teach language at all levels, departmental courses in his or her specialization, courses in the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum, independent studies as needed, and to direct in rotation a semester-long study abroad program to mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Teaching will contribute to the interdisciplinary program in Asian Studies, and may contribute to Colgate’s other interdisciplinary programs, depending on the successful candidate’s area(s) of interest and expertise. The teaching load is five courses per year. Faculty responsibilities include productive scholarly research, student advising, and service to the University and the profession.

Bowling Green position

The Department of World Languages and Cultures at Bowling Green State University seeks applicants for a part-time adjunct instructor in support of the BGSU Chinese Program, starting August 16, 2025. Successful applicant will teach one or two language courses per semester. The Departments of East Asian Studies and Comparative Literature at Princeton University invite applications for a jointly appointed tenure-track assistant professor in contemporary Chinese literature, media, and culture. Chinese Encounters with the Mediterranean in Late Qing Travel Accounts: Call for research position

The University of Palermo (Italy) is the lead institution for the research project “The Mediterranean through Chinese Eyes: An Analysis Based on Geographical and Travel Sources from the Song to Qing Dynasties (960–1911) [MeTChE]”, funded by the Italian Ministry of Universities and Research. In relation to this project, the following research position with a research grant is announced, for a duration of 12 months. The research work can also be conducted remotely, in collaboration with the Principal Investigator (PI) and the research units. The deadline for submitting the application is June 30, 2024.

RESEARCH TITLE
Chinese Encounters with the Mediterranean in Late Qing Travel Accounts: A Transcultural Exploration

DESCRIPTION
The research fellow will collaborate on the project “The Mediterranean through Chinese Eyes: An Analysis Based on Geographical and Travel Sources from the Song to Qing Dynasties (960–1911)”. He/she will be in charge of collecting and translating late Qing-era Chinese travel sources to analyze descriptions of Mediterranean civilizations from a transcultural perspective, under the supervision of the Project Scientific Supervisor. Specifically, he/she will:

  • Identify a selection of travel accounts by Chinese travelers in the Mediterranean and Europe;
  • Create an archive of occurrences of the term “Mediterranean”;
  • Analyze and translate excerpts from collected works related to the theme of Mediterranean culture (both material and immaterial aspects);
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses to delineate the perception of the Mediterranean by late Qing-era Chinese travelers.

The research fellow will collaborate with the project’s PI and other research unit members, either in person at the Departmental offices or remotely, in producing research outputs and organizing conferences and events.
