MGV Minutes for June 13, 2024

Opening and Pledge of Allegiance – Stephanie Barkay opened the meeting. Al led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

  • Marilyn told us that Pam only has one more treatment to finish with her chemotherapy. She has words of encouragement posted on her refrigerator. Pam continues to show her strength as she continues her treatment. She has been staying away from crowds to avoid any infections.

Committee Reports

  • Bring One Take One (BOTO) – Ryan Emmet-Luchansky and Debbie Tominey – Ryan told us the cleaned pots are underneath the long table by the pest clinic. MGVs can use these pots to bring their plants in. Debbie encouraged us to make garden art crafts and to add our craft idea to the sign-up form. Ryan mentioned a workday could be set up for us to work together on some craft projects. The BOTO will be on Saturday, August 10 The plant exchange will be 9-10:30 am and the inside sale will be 9 am -12 pm. Volunteers should be at the extension at 8:30 am. We will set up on Friday, August 9th 9-12. You can bring your plants in the day of our meeting on Thursday, August 8th or Friday from 9-2. It will help if the plants are identified.
  • Canfield Fair – Jim Z – No report
  • Community Outreach – Thresea Harris and Lois Martin-Uscanowski – Thresea passed around a sign-up form for Veggies and More. Veggies and More are every Monday. The dates and locations are on the sign-up form. Lois encouraged more of us to sign-up for CityScape next year.
  • Education – Karen went to Villa Marie. She told us they had flower and vegetable plants for sale. We will schedule a date to visit in July. The trolley for Mill Creek on June 25th is full for the 3-4 pm time slot but the 1:30 pm time has availability. Let Karen Gates know if you are interested (727-492-8605).
  • Garden Workshop – Marianna Eister and Jim Merva – They are done for the year
  • Hospitality – Peg Zeleznik, Natalie Fraser, and Rhonda Harris – Kristen has a sign-up form to bring in treats for Morning with the Masters.
  • New and Active Pollinator Gardens – Pinky thanked those that helped at the Lisbon pollinator garden. Marilyn commented on how nice the gardens at Smucker House looked.
  • OSU Extension Grounds – Mike Beaudis and Paula Kohler – Mike told us he was stepping down as co-chair of the OSU Extension Grounds. Paula will be the chair. Mike encouraged committee members to help. If anyone wants to be added to the grounds committee, let Kristen know. Paula will determine the jobs that need done and committee members can let her know the date, time and the job they will do to make the times more flexible for the committee members.
  • Plant and Pest Clinic – David Sprague
    • Mahoning Clinic is Monday and Thursdays from 9 am to 12 pm if you want to volunteer. Columbiana Clinic is Wednesday 12 pm to 3 pm.
  • Recruitment and Retention – Bob Eister and Bob Ferguson – 4 people came to the Open House, and all were very interested.
  • Veterans – Mike said this is his last year coordinating the laying of the wreaths at the cemetery. The next MGV to take over will need to find a cemetery in Columbiana or Mahoning County. Without extra funding, it has to be a cemetery in which only 100 wreaths would be needed for the veterans.

Administration Report

  • Kristen told us she appreciated everything we do for the community. She also reminded us that the summer will be a busy time for the office; there are many different programs within the office, and she won’t always be in the office. Mondays and Fridays are the best times to reach her. If you call or email her, please give her a few days to get back to you.
  • There will be some changes on Hands on Connect to hopefully make it more user-friendly for your hours. – Still to Come

  • Marilyn told us she was presenting for the Beekeepers in Austintown on June 23rd. If you would like to help her, let her know.

May 9, 2024

Opening and Pledge of Allegiance

  • Vice President Stephanie Barkay welcomed all.
  • Mike Beaudis led the Pledge of Allegiance.
  • Marilyn McKinley reported that President Pam Baytos continues to keep a positive attitude during her recovery.

Committee Reports

  • Bring One Take One – Ryan Emmet-Luchansky and Debbie Tominey: Ryan informed us that the committee held their first meeting this evening and passed around a volunteer sheet for the indoor plant sale. This will be held after the BOTO event outside. They are in need of more plant pots. Garden Art will have a display of items for sale as well. Debbie encouraged us to donate items such as baskets for the sale. The event is Aug.10.
  • Canfield Fair – Jim Z: Peg Zeleznik reported for Jim that things are moving forward for our display which will have an education theme. Please save paper egg cartoons for the plant make-and-take project. They will need donations of wind chimes like last year for display. Plants needed for display are native pollinators, shade-loving plants, house plants, herbs/veggies. The next meeting is on May 29, 3-4pm. Call Jim’s cell if you have questions: 330-727-0780
  • Community Outreach – Thresea Harris and Lois Martin-Uscanowski: Thresea announced that the first Veggies and More event will be on Monday, June 10 at Hope for Newport gardens. The last one is on Monday, Aug.19. The MCP plant sale is this weekend and the Holburn Herb Plant sale is this Sat. May 11 9-2 pm at the fairgrounds.
  • Education- Karen Gates and Mariann Mannion: A field trip to Villa Maria will take place on Sat. May 18. Carpools for the event are to meet at OSU Ext office at 8:30am. If you are interested in a Trolley Tour of MCP at 3pm on Tues. June 25 let Karen Gates know (727-492-8605).
  • Garden Workshop – Marianna Eister and Jim Merva: Marianna thanked all those who helped make the workshops a success. There were less numbers in attendance with more on the first day. Integrative pest management, fruits and gardening were of great interest to those who attended. The committee will review the evaluations of the events and she will email all MGVs that were involved in the workshops.
  • Hospitality – Peg Zeleznik, Natalie Fraser, and Rhonda Harris: Peg thanked all that donated to the recent MGV interns’ lunches. Food was great and enjoyed by all. The committee would appreciate appetizer food items for the upcoming Open House on June 4. Please bring donations in by 2pm that day. If you left food containers in the office from the lunches, they are on the back table in the large meeting room.
  • New and Active Pollinator Gardens: Marge Greenisen announced that the Smucker House will be having a non-profit event on June 1st from 10-2 pm and would like volunteers to host an MGV table to answer questions from the community. She thanked us for ordering geraniums. If you ordered any geraniums, they may be picked up at her house on May 18. She will bring the rest to OSU EXT on Monday May 20. Gail Siembida said there will be a planting day on May 16 at 9am.  Pinky Steffen needs help in cleaning up the Columbiana pollinator gardens next Wed. May15. Contact her if you can help.
  • OSU Extension Grounds – Mike Beaudis and Paula Kohler: Mike announced that they have had 3 clean-ups on the grounds and next week another from 1-3pm Wed. May 15. He thanked Mike McBride for a large donation of marigolds.
  • Plant and Pest Clinic – David Sprague Mahoning Clinic is Monday and Thursdays from 9 am to 12 pm if you want to volunteer. Columbiana Clinic is on Wednesdays from 1-3pm.
  • Recruitment and Retention – Bob Eister and Bob Ferguson: Marianna reported for Bob E. that the time of the Open House has been changed and now will be 3:30-5:30 so more can attend. It will be held inside. A volunteer sheet was distributed for this event. If you can help let the committee know asap.
  • Veterans: Al Leonhart said there is a clean-up scheduled this Sat. May 11 at the Log Cabin on the fairgrounds. Huntington Bank volunteers will edge. Mulching and planting there is TBD. Wreaths for Veterans will take place on Dec 7 at the Canfield Cemetery on Rt 224.

  • There will be some changes on Hands on Connect to hopefully make it more user-friendly for your hours. – Still to Come
  • Library Mini-Series – The library would like to do a fall mini-series please let Kristen know if you are interested ASAP.
  • YMHA – YMHA (Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority) sites are securing a grant to have a garden at a few of their facilities. They are looking for MGVs to guide them through the gardening process. If you are interested in helping at any of these locations, please let Kristen know.

  • South Range Schools – South Range Schools, that is interested in developing an apple orchard on their campus.

  • Sign up for education on Soil Life. Soil Life will be presented on June 25th from 9:30 am – 11:00 pm for MGVs and OCVNs only.

New Business

  • Winter Holiday Donation? Kristen asked MGVs to send her information about community groups that MGVs could donate to for struggling families and children during the holidays.
  • Marilyn will be presenting about butterflies and moths at the Smucker House on June 17 at 7pm. If you would like to help notify Marilyn.
  • Thresea asked us to make a festive decoration with garden tools and seed packets for the Fellows Christmas tree.

Opening and Pledge of Allegiance

Vice President Stephanie Barkay welcomed all and Al Leonhart led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Marilyn Mckinley reported that our MGV President, Pam Baytos, is doing well recovering from her recent surgery and has begun her treatments. She continues to keep a positive attitude and really appreciates our love and support.

At our March meeting, Stephanie B. gave away tubers and in one of the containers there was a garden trowel which she would like returned to her. Thanks for your help with this.

Committee Reports

  • Bring One Take One:  Ryan Emmet-Luchansky
    • Thank you for the donations received to date. We are still in need of more pots, containers, tools, and baskets that are in good condition to be used for the BOTO on Aug.10th. The first committee meeting will be announced soon for next month.
    • There will be a Herb sale on May 11 at the Canfield Fairgrounds sponsored by the Holborn Herb Guild.
  • Canfield Fair – Jim Zeleznik – Peg announced the following for Jim: Theme is education and there are 8 areas of focus for the MGV space. Displays are coming together and help is needed from any MGVs willing to provide plants in the following areas: Native Ohio/ Pollinator, Container-shade loving or showy, House Plants, Herbs/Veggies. A sign-up sheet was available for this. Also, please save egg cartons (paper) for one of the make-and-take ideas. The next committee meeting is Wed. May 1st from 3-4. If you would like to reach Jim with ideas, his cell is 330-727-0780.
  • Community Outreach – Thresea Harris and Lois Martin-Uscanowski – Thresea announced that the Christmas tree for Fellows Gardens has been paid. The Veggies and More calendar will be put together in May. Congratulations to Lois as she has been nominated to receive the Athena Leadership Award.
    • Lois needs to know ASAP if you want to help with Cityscape Event June 1. T-shirts will be available for the first 500 signed up.
  • Garden Workshop – Marianna Eister and Jim Merva
    • Sign-up sheets for the Saturday workshops were sent around during the meeting. Marianna has asked that those helping in the morning, show up no earlier than 8:15 am. There are still openings to attend the workshops. Marianna gave volunteers their written assignments. Volunteers see Marianna after the meeting for more details.
  • Hospitality – Peg Zeleznik, Natalie Fraser, and Rhonda Harris: Peg thanked the many MGVs that have contributed generously to our intern lunches on Tuesdays. Interns have really enjoyed the great food. The OSU staff is also grateful for the wonderful lunches as well. A sign-up sheet to help with the remaining lunches and morning coffees was sent around. If you can help let Peg know. Some MGVs have donated money to help with the cost of the food that other MGVs prepare. Thank you very much for your generosity. Peg suggested we consider appetizers instead of baked good donations for the next R&R MGV Open House in June.
  • OSU Extension Grounds – Mike Beaudis and Paula Kohler – Mike thanked his committee for help with clean-up around the OSU office. Katie Shipka took photos at one of their last work sessions.

    • Mahoning Clinic is Monday and Thursdays from 9 am to 12 pm if you want to volunteer, and Wednesdays in Columbiana from 12-3pm.
  • Recruitment and Retention – Bob Eister and Bob Ferguson – Bob E. shared an update on our Pictorial Directory which will help us learn more about our MGVs and be able to connect with them, too. It is optional to answer the questions. Please send in your bio asap and photo as well. If you would like to review what you submitted please let Bob E. know. Thanks for your help with this project.
  • Education– A tour of the Villa Maria grounds is being planned for May 18 with carpools meeting at the office at 10:15 am.

  • Sign-up for Garden Art and Morning with the Masters – There are dates available to help with hospitality and volunteer hours. Hosts are needed for Morning with the Masters.
  • Apparel Order – Orders and Money Due April 15
  • South Range Schools requested help with starting fruit trees. If you are interested, notify Kristen.
  • Apple trees – Apple trees Golden Rush and Enterprise are available to purchase for $20. You need a crabapple tree for them to cross pollinate or you can purchase a Golden Rush and Enterprise for cross pollination.

Old Business

  • Entertainment Event – Marilyn McKinley – Sign up sheet passed around. The event is on May 6th at 5:30 pm and cost is $5. We will need 50 people to sign up. It is a music trivia event and pot luck.
  • Marge Greenisen is taking orders for Smucker House geraniums. There are 5 colors of geraniums and cost is $1.50. You can pick them up at Marge’s house on May 18th or at the extension office on May 20th. Marge is taking orders until May 1st.

New Business

  • On June 25th, a Mill Creek trolley tour is planned. The cost is $20 per person.

Master Gardener Volunteer Meeting

March 14, 2024

Opening and Pledge of Allegiance

Stephanie Barkay opened the meeting and Chester Kaschak led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

  • Secretary minutes: Marilyn reported that our MGV President, Pam Baytos, is recovering well from her recent surgery and will begin chemo in upcoming weeks. Marilyn suggested that Pam would love cards and also it’s better to text than call as Pam does rest during the day.

Committee Reports

  • Bring One Take One
    • We are looking for donations of pots, containers, and baskets that are in good condition to be used for the BOTO. Please drop them off at the office.
  • Canfield Fair – Jim Z: Peg Z. reported that the committee had their first meeting and the second meeting is scheduled for April 3 (3-4pm). The theme this year for our display will be focused on Education.
  • Community Outreach – Thresea Harris and Lois Martin-Uscanowski: Lois reported that the CityScape event will take place on June 1. The event takes place downtown and there are hundreds of volunteers. MGVs are in charge of the planting teams. This is a fun activity to participate in and if you are interested, please let Lois know by the end of March. She needs to know your t-shirt size as well. The first 400 volunteers receive t-shirts. You may send a text with that info to Lois at 330-727-8340.
  • Education – Karen Gates and Mariann Mannion: Karen said their committee met before our meeting tonight. They are requesting any PowerPoint presentations that you have that MGVs may find helpful. Education kits are available to check out through the front office. The sign-up sheet will be near Candace. If you have any kits please return them to the office and thanks.
  • Garden Workshop – Marianna Eister and Jim Merva: Marianna announced that the dates will be Saturday, April 20th & 27th with the focus on education. Arts and crafts will not be sold during the Workshop. She thanked MGVs for volunteering to step up and teach break-out sessions. If you can help, there are a couple of “floater” volunteer positions open on April 20th. Assembly of goodie bags will take place on April 19th. There are four openings to help that day, too. Let Marianna know if you can help. Jim M. is handling the publicity. They are in need of breakfast type food for the event as well.
  • Hospitality – Peg Zeleznik, Natalie Fraser, and Rhonda Harris: Peg requested food items for the Garden Workshop (coffee cake, muffins for a.m. and cookies for p.m.). Sign up for this was available. She encouraged us to take the Occasional Quality Cooks Training (OQC) online if we have not yet done so. Anyone wanting to bring in home-made items to any event must have taken OQC training or store packaged food is appreciated. There is a need to provide larger quantities of food for our current intern lunches on Tuesdays. We are providing for at least 35 now that the class size is larger and they are really enjoying the lunches.
  • New and Active Pollinator Gardens – Gail Siembida, Pinky Steffen, Marge Greenisen: Pinky said they are waiting for warmer weather to begin cleanup of gardens at Columbiana County Fairgrounds. Marge announced April 9th at 9am will be cleanup at the Smucker House grounds. Bring tools, tubs, bags to help with this. Make-up day is April 15th. The Salem Area Garden Club meetings at the Smucker House are the second Wednesday of the month. Marilyn announced that Bee City in Salem is taking over the Waterworth Park pollinator garden and needs MGVs as consultants. They need people in garden for an upcoming pollinator week events the third week in June.
  • OSU Extension Grounds – Mike Beaudis and Paula Kohler: The first committee meeting was on March 11th. The March 20th workday is cancelled. Mike hopes to meet every two weeks and suggests that volunteers bring tools to help with edging and weeding. He put in a request to replace the stones next to the OSU office sign.
  • Plant and Pest Clinic – David Sprague: An intro and refresher training class is March 25th 10-12pm. Canfield clinic will open April 1st and Columbiana clinic April 3.
  • Recruitment and Retention – Bob Eister and Bob Ferguson: Bob E. thanked the MGVs that are mentoring our intern class of 19 people. The next Open House will take place on June 4th from 3-5pm (rain day June 18th).  He suggests that station representatives focus on 6 key items of discussion (about a minute each). A bell will signal guests to move on to the next station. He requested that a flyer be placed in the Garden Workshop goodie bags to publicize the Open House. Bob reminded MGVs to complete their pictorial bio as soon possible.
  • Veterans Committee– Mike Beaudis, Al Leonhart, and Chester Kaschak: The 2024 veteran wreath placement will be at the same cemetery as last year in Canfield but next year we will need another cemetery. If you know of a cemetery with no more than 100 veterans notify Mike. Al discussed that they are planning on removing and dividing plants around the Log Cabin.

  • 24/7/365 Vegetable Garden: April 17th at 10am. Tim McDermot presenter. Let Candace know if you want to attend this free session for MGVs.

  • Entertainment Event – Marilyn McKinley: There will be a fun music Trivia Event on Monday, May 6 from 5:30-8pm at our office. (not an OSU event) All are welcome to attend including spouses. Cost is $5 and appetizers are appreciated. Marilyn does need us to RSVP to her cell (973-865-7441). There will be door prizes! Teams limited to 4 people.
  • Volunteer opportunities: Marilyn announced that she will be presenting four different programs and would love some help. If you are interested call her cell and let her know. Here are the programs:
    • March 20th 7pm @ St. Michael’s on hummingbirds;
    • April 7th 3:30pm @ North Lima 4H on pollinator plants;
    • April 17th 6pm Boardman Library on Pollinators;
    • June 12th 7pm @ Smucker House on Butterflies and Moths.

New Business

  • 4-H Endowment Event – Basket: Due April 9th: Event is April 13th at Mr. Anthony’s and cost is $40. If you would like to be in charge of putting together a basket of donations for the event let Kristen know.
  • Lori’s Retirement – David: Party is March 28th and donations are to be given to David.
  • Apple Trees:  If you would like to order an apple tree the cost is $20 and they will be shipped April 8th. Let Kristen know.
  • Smucker House Geranium Sale – Marge Greenisen
    • Geraniums come in five colors and will be $1.50 per plant. Sign-up sheet in back of room – Orders due May 1st
    • Delivery will be mid-May. (May 20th at office or arrange to pick them up at Marge’s home.

MGV Meeting Minutes for February 8, 2024

Opening and Pledge of Allegiance

  • Executive meeting report – An executive meeting was held on 1/16/24. Some ideas that were discussed were to explore advertising of pollinator gardens and invite the public to tour the gardens. Another idea was to plan local garden tours of our MGVs’ gardens. There was some interest in organizing bus trips for MGVs. Another idea was to change our monthly winter meetings to afternoon times.

Committee Reports

  • Education – Karen Gates and Mariann Mannion – The education committee had their 1st meeting and explored new ideas for education hours. We are looking at creating a flyer to send out that list all available classes and workshops. Trumbull MGV program sends out a flyer with their education programs.
  • Garden Workshop – Marianna Eister and Jim Merva – The Spring Workshop will be on April 20th and 27th. Speakers are being confirmed. It will include one make-n-take for the 3rd break-out session. There will be a pollinator garden tour. The Farm and Dairy will provide items for gift bags. The pest clinic will set up a booth. There will be fewer volunteers used and no crafts sale.   • Hospitality – Peg Zeleznik, Natalie Fraser, and Rhonda Harris – Sign up the new class is being passed around.
  • Grounds – There will be a planning meeting held March 4th at 6:00 pm at the office in the Large Classroom.
  • Recruitment and Retention – Bob Eister and Bob Ferguson – The Open House on 1/16 was a success. Everyone did a great job. We have a total of 22 applicants. Interviews have started. The classes will start on 2/20. The next R&R meeting will be on 2/20 at 6:30 pm. The next open house will be on June 4th from 3-5pm.
  • Bring One Take One – We plan to have a meeting before the next MGV meeting. We would like to enhance the event this year and provide pots for each plant. A sign-up sheet was passed around for MGVs to indicate what they could supply, e.g. seeds, plants, pots, yogurt containers, etc. You can start bringing clean containers next meeting.

Administration Report

  • There will be some changes on Hands On Connect to hopefully make it more user-friendly for your hours. We will make the categories match committee names.
  • Update on the Training Class – If any MGV would like to attend a training class, let Candace know so hospitality can prepare enough food for those attending. We need Mentors for new trainees. There is a sign-up sheet for Mentors.
    • Expectations for mentors are making sure you are checking in with your mentee at least once a week during training (phone, text, in-person). Be available March 5th during the training class to meet your mentee. We would also like you to be available for your mentee’s presentation which will be April 30th or May 7th. After training stay in contact, invite them to volunteer, speak, and teach with you.
  • Sign-up for Garden Art and Morning with the Masters – Volunteers are needed to help with classes. We also need volunteers to help with painting terra cotta pots white for garden art project.
  • Lori is retiring at the end of the month. There will be an open house for her on Thursday 3/28 (Kristen stated the wrong date, sorry) from 12-2pm. The MGVs are invited to attend. Please feel free to bring an appetizer to help celebrate her retirement. Everyone will be notified of the open house by email. There was a suggestion for the MGVs to take up a collection. Peg is being asked to make a wonderful card for everyone to sign.
  • 24/7/365 Vegetable Garden will be presented by Tim McDermott on 4/17/24 on hydroponic gardening. This will be offered to our MGVs first and other MGV’s in March. This class is free, but you do need to register. Call the office to register.
  • Interest in Bill Snyder Class –He would like to give a class about living organisms in the soil. No date has been set for this class. Many people were interested, so Kristen will work with Bill to get something scheduled.

New Business

  • Entertainment Event – Marilyn McKinley would like to know if MGVs would be interested in a social Trivia night for MGVs and their spouses.
  • City Scape – Lois told us that the City Scape event downtown will be June 1st. Kick-off will be at 250 W. Federal. Let Lois know if you want a t-shirt by the end of the month.
  • Stephanie Barkay will present IPM education after this meeting.

MGV Minutes for December 14, 2023

I.             Opening

a.     Welcome & Pledge of Allegiance (Veteran Volunteers and spouses) – Bob recognized Al Leonhart for being the most senior MGV that remains active in our group. Al was in the first class of 26 MGV’s that started in 1993. Bob thanked Al for his input and efforts over the years. Al then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

b.    Special Speaker Kristen will do a presentation at the end of the meeting on our annual program review.

MGV Minutes for November 9, 2023

I.          Opening

a.   Welcome & Pledge of Allegiance (Veteran Volunteers and spouses) – Bob recognized the veterans and their spouses for their service and sacrifices they have contributed toward our freedom. Marilyn read a heartfelt letter honoring all veterans for their service and sacrifices they made for keeping America strong and free.

b.   Special Speaker – Kristen introduced our OSU staff speaker, Alex, who did a presentation at the end of the meeting on Team Building.

ii.    Co. Coordinator – Pam B (State Awards Report) – Pam showed us an award sticker for this year to be applied to our existing award’s plaque. Pam told us we won a $100 cash award for Invasive Species, (featured at the Canfield Fair) and another $100 cash award for our Veggies and More/Good Nature Garden Partners program.

b.   Committee Reports

i.      Plant and Pest Clinic – David S.

The clinic review is scheduled for November 20th and MGV officers are welcome to attend. The clinic is in winter hours and mostly answering questions now. Email if you are planning to attend the review.

ii.    Community Outreach – Thresea H reported we will use a patriotic theme for the Christmas tree at Fellows Gardens. Thresea asked to have a subcommittee for decorating the Christmas Tree. The plan is to decorate the tree on November 29th at 10am.

Lois expressed sympathy on the passing of one of our MGVs, Maggie Wellington, and has prayer cards from her services.

iii.   Education – Stephanie B told us we now have 7 educational kits. The kits are kept in a storage closet near the office kitchen. Some of the kits are incomplete. We will have a sign-up sheet to keep track of the kits. Stephanie asked if anyone has another one of our educational kits to bring it to the office to be cataloged. Stephanie said she believes we have more kits that have not been located as yet. She said a list of the kits available for MGV training and speaker use will be completed soon.

iv.   Veterans (Building and Wreaths) – Mike B – The Wreaths for Veterans will be on Saturday, December 2 at 10am at Canfield Cemetery, 315 E Main St, Canfield. Mike asked for MGVs to be there at 8:30am to put tags on the wreaths. American Legion Post will present a ceremony with our Chester K as speaker. This event will be held regardless of weather.

c.   Administrative Report – Eric & Kristen

i.      HOC Connect Open HouseàDecember 12th from 9 am to 6 pm. Kristen asked those attending to bring their username and password. You may bring your own laptops, iPads to use. We were reminded again to enter our MGV hours by Dec. 31 into HOC. Please enter HOC hours ASAP!

ii.    Each MGV in attendance received an invite to the MGV Banquet to be held on January 11th at A La Carte restaurant at 6:30. Doors open at 6pm. Kristen will mail invites to those not in attendance. Please RSVP by Dec.18.

iii.   Get ready for Elections:  Kristen described the duties of the officers and Leadership Team members as well as reviewing qualifications and terms of service.

iv.   Expectations of Committees – Chairs Responsibilities: Bob E. reviewed the MGV Committee chairpersons’ responsibilities/guidelines. Committee descriptions were also read.

v.    Kristen passed out the MGV Survey for 2024 for us to complete on the strengths and suggestions for the MGV program. If you want a response from the office, please put your name on the form. Kristen said the surveys can be put in the box when turned in tonight. The surveys may also be taken home and returned to the office before our December meeting begins. There will also be an online version of the survey in the December Newsletter. Please try to get the survey returned soon so the results can be included in our program review scheduled for the December MGV meeting.

MGV Minutes for October 12, 2023

I.  Opening and Pledge of Allegiance – President Bob Eister welcomed us and recognized all MGVs that are Educators by having them stand. These Educators led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

i.      Pam B – Co Coordinator Upcoming art series classes and what materials will be needed.   Pam requested the need for greenery cut to 12-to-20-inch lengths for two upcoming holiday container classes in November. The classes are on Nov.8 and Nov.15. Materials may be brought to the office on the Mondays before the classes (Nov.6 and Nov.13). Please leave greenery outside of office to prevent any sticky sap in building. There will be another holiday centerpiece class in December. Pam also announced that Continuing Education Units Zoom programs are back and can be accessed by going to:  go.osu.edu./MGVlearn. These are the 2023-2024 Hort. Happy Hour and Lunch and Learn Webinar Series classes.

ii.    Community Outreach –Thresea H & Lois M –U – Thresea Harris said there has not yet been an announcement of a theme for this year’s Christmas tree decorations at the Fellow Gardens. If you are on her committee, please contact her to let her know by calling, not emailing. This year the tree will cost $70. She is planning to decorate on either Nov. 29 or 30.

iii.   Hospitality – Peg Z- Please call Peg to sign up for food donations for next month’s classes. We were encouraged to take food safety course (especially new members). OQC class Info was on a handout at the meeting and is available online.

iv.    Veterans (Building and Wreaths) – Al L, Chester K & Mike B.  – Mike announced that the ceremony for the Wreaths Program will take place at 10am at the Canfield main cemetery on Rt 224. Please arrive by 8:30am to help put tags on the wreaths. Enter through the first drive and pull into the back where parking is provided. Al said they are still waiting on daffodil bulbs which will be planted near the Log Cabin at the fairgrounds. Chester said that a new roof has been installed on the cabin.

 

II.        MGV Officers Business

a.  Bob reported the initial 2023 September Recruitment & Retention MGV Open House was held at our OSU Extension office on Wednesday, September 27th from 3-5 pm.) We had 20 RSVP s and they all came to meet us. We also had 7 people walk in. Exit comments from the attendees were very positive. Thanks for all who contributed to making this event so successful.  Bob informed us a retention call list will be sent out on October 23rd, just to give those that have the hours completed time to enter them into the Hands on Connect (HOC) system. Kristen needs time to review our hours entered into the HOC system. Those needing help entering completed hours can go to Hands on Connect help day. This is on Dec 12 from 9am-6pm. Eric approved IPM credit for reading IPM Vindy articles and the BY&G articles for our Continuing Educations hours.

b.   Bob discussed the expectations, duties and qualifications of Committee Chairs and Officers for 2024 – A handout was provided at the meeting providing the duties of officers and committee chairs as well as qualifications for these positions. The offices of President, Vice President, Recording Secretary and Communications Liaison serve for 2 consecutive years.  Marilyn M. and her team is in need of new members to help with the state awards committee. Stephanie B. (Education Committee) requests all Education training kits be returned to the office if you have any of them.

 

III.      OSU Administrative Report – Eric

  • MGV Nominations will be taken at the November meeting. Voting will follow via an online survey.

  • There is an online survey in your October Newsletter to submit topics that you would like education on in 2024. Eric needs Vindy articles. Eric reported that Spotted Lanternfly has been seen in our area. If you see a Spotted Lanternfly, notify the office. You will need a picture or the Spotted Lanternfly to verify it. Kristen is working on Power Point education, 101 and 102.

  • Please continue to enter your hours in Hands on Connect, they are due December 31st. There is a Hands on Connect help day on December 12thfrom 9:00 am to 6:00pm.

a.   Discussion on OSU Approved MGV yard sign. – If you would like an OSU MGV yard sign, notify Jim M.

The sign would say “An OSU Master Gardener Volunteer lives here” then show the logo. Costs below quoted by one local printer. 24×18 Full Color Yard Signs (Double sided / stakes included) QTY 5- $15 each, 10- $12 each, 20- $10 each and 50- $9 each.

b.   Field trips – Paula K would like to help coordinate some possible Day or Overnight Trips next year. Bus or POV? Maybe both.

MGV Minutes for September 14, 2023

I. Opening and Pledge of Allegiance: President Bob Eister led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence followed in remembrance of 911. Master Gardeners that were former law enforcement officers, corrections or served in law and those who served as 1st responders were asked to stand as they were recognized for their service.

   1. Canfield Fair Review– Jim Zeleznik thanked all those involved in making our MGV display at the fair creative and informative. He also thanked all those that helped by working at our exhibit to make it a huge success.
  2. Bring One Take One – Kristen & Eric – Bob
Bob E. reviewed the BOTO event that took place August 12th. The plant and treasure sale took place from 9 am to 12 pm. The plant exchange bell rang at 10 am with good participation. He thanked MGVs for their donated plants as most were sold. The garden art was amazing. Feedback by the public said it was a positive, fun experience for all those that participated. Kristen announced that $808 was reported for sales at this event and will be used to support the MGV banquet.
3. Community Outreach –Thresea Harris & Lois Martin-Uscanowski- Lois thanked all MGVs that attended the Veggie and More Tours this summer. She said that the last one at Glenda House’s home was wonderful. Glenda’s gardens are a must see if you missed the tour this year at her place. Thresea left a note with the office stating that the Christmas Tree is going on this year, but she would not have more information until the next meeting. No theme has been decided yet.
4. Hospitality – Peg Zeleznik and Natalie Fraser – Desserts are requested for the upcoming Sept.27 Open House and Oct. 10th Morning with the Masters events. A sign-up sheet was passed around. Let them know if you can help and were not present at the meeting.
5. County Coordinator –Pam Baytos- Please let Pam know if you have any ideas or videos to post on the state website that show our events and committee activities. Pam thought we could display the awards we have received at our open house. Marilyn McKinley volunteered to help Pam with this display.
6. Veterans (Building and Wreaths) – Al L, Chester K & Mike B-
Mike thanked all involved with their help in keeping the OSU Extension grounds looking good especially for the commissioners’ meeting and fair. He also thanked John Schoeni for repairing a bench. Mike said our Veteran Wreath event on Sat. Dec, 2 at 10am will be at the Canfield Cemetery on Rt 224. We do have the necessary funds now for the wreaths. Al Leonhart announced and thanked all those that helped with the grounds around the Log Cabin at the fairgrounds. Daffodils will be planted in late October.

II. MGV Officers New Business
A. R&R MGV Planning meeting for the next Open House will be held at our OSU Extension office on Wednesday, September 20th at 7:30 pm.
The initial 2023 September R&R MGV Open House will be held at our OSU Extension office on Wednesday, September 27th from 3-5 pm.
R&R OH Duty Signup Sheet – Bob requested volunteers for each of the positions for the Open House. See the attachment Event Plan for MGV Open House. All the volunteers for the Open House were invited to attend the next R&R committee meeting on September 20 at 7:30 pm. During the meeting we reviewed the video that will be shown in an endless loop during the open house. If anyone has additional pictures to add to the video, contact Peg G.
B. Ed Kits and PowerPoint training – Kristen asked us to let her know our educational needs for the powerpoint presentation that is being developed for the MGVs. She asked us to put the information on a piece of paper and put them in a box for our suggestions.

A. MGV Apparel arrived at the OSU Extension Office – Kristen asked us to take home any apparel or other items with our name on it.
B. Speaking opportunities
1. The Gasser Chair Company are very interested in our assistance to start a community garden possibly with raised beds.
2. Fellows Riverside requested a fall presentation in October.
3. A church in Youngstown requested education in May of 2024 on planting and growing. Stephanie H volunteered.
C. Kristen said she will be doing HOC training in December. Please continue to update your hours in the system in a timely manner.
She also asked us to write down questions that we had before, during or as interns of the MGV training to help in developing a list of frequently asked questions (FAQ). These will be compiled into a FAQ handout.

Plant drop-off time is from 8 am to 12 pm on Friday, August 11th during set-up.

On August 12th (Saturday) the plant sale will take place from 9 am to 12 pm. The plant exchange will happen at 10 am. Kristen provided all with a “Guide to BOTO” and reminded us that all purchases are cash or check only and there will be no holds on any items. Prices range from $1-$10 dollars identified by colored stickers which correspond to sticker chart prices on the walls in the room. Lori Moff will be there to help as Kristen and Eric are both unavailable that day. Kristen announced the names of those who volunteered to serve on the various teams needed for this event. The plant exchange will take place outside. Guests are welcome to shop inside from 9-12. There will be MGVs and clinic brochures available at a table in the entryway. Clean-up will be from 12-1 on Saturday. Kristen said she has the sign-up sheet tonight for anyone available to help with the BOTO.

 

Canfield Fair –Jim Z.  Jim Zeleznik announced that set-up will begin at 9:30am on Monday, August 28th for our display. The Sensory Garden theme will include a water feature, outdoor get-a-way, skull display, plant/pest clinic table, and Junior MG display. These will all focus on our senses. There will be a display of our committee activities. Jim would like to add wind chimes. Please contact him if we have any to loan. Put your names on them so they will be returned to you. Peg Z will help with signage. A signup sheet was passed around for staffing of this event.

 

Community Outreach –Thresea Harris & Lois Martin–Uscanowski:  Thresea said there have been good turnouts for the Monday night Veggies and More Tours. Lois thanked those who attended her butterfly event. The following nights are left to attend: Glenda’s Garden- Aug 14; Good Nature Garden Party at St. Patrick’s-Aug. 21; and Flying High- Aug 28@ 100 Broadway (this was rescheduled because of rain a week ago).

 

Veterans (Building and Wreaths) – Al L, Chester K & Mike B

Mike Beaudis announced that the wreath placement plan for vets’ graves at Canfield Cemetery on 224 potentially will be canceled. It has been revealed that this cemetery exceeds the scope of our program. We only have $1,027 of the approximately $2,750 to purchase wreaths for about 255 grave sites. Normally our program can provide funding and services for about 100 wreaths for veterans’ graves.  We will continue to search for other cemetery sites. However, orders for this year’s wreaths must be placed by the end of August. Contact Mike if you have any other cemetery site suggestions.

Al Leonhart and Chester Kaschak announced that the veteran’s cabin at the fairgrounds has a new roof. The old tiles and slate from the roof will be sold to raise money. Mums will be planted and additional cleaning done before the fair.

They would like someone to speak in Late Sept. or early October. Let Kristen know if you are interested.  Stephanie B added that if you would like to help with one of these projects and need someone to shadow let her know. There are MGVs who can help you get experience in doing education.

d.    Fair signup sheets were available after the meeting. Kristen will get the fair packets ready as soon as the signup sheet is filled.

If you have books to donate bring them into the office and give them to Candice. Please do not enter the room for books if the room is being used. Garden magazines may be donated as well.
  • Mike Beaudis announced the Gardeners of Greater Youngstown 58th Annual Horticulture Show Aug 26-27 at Fellows Gardens. There are nine categories of flowers and vegetables to enter if you are interested.
  • John S called attention to the recognition and awards given to Eric Barrett and Haley Shoemaker. Their assistance was recognized for efforts provided to the community of East Palestine as it was affected by the recent rail disaster.  John noted an article appearing in the Farm and Dairy publication.
