Adams County 4-H Kids College

Kids College classes are filling up! Choose from Archery, Art, Cake Decorating, Fishing with Phipps, Food Fun, or STEM and complete project work, learn more about pre-fair judging, and leave with supplies to help complete your project. Cost is just $10. Register before April 15 at http://go.OSU.edu/KidsCollege22. Youth must be a 4-H project member to attend but do not have to be enrolled in the project area they choose to explore. Kids College is sponsored by Southern State Community College.

Explore the Outdoors SPIN Club

Explore the Outdoors with our newest SPIN (SPecial INterest) Club! This club will hike and explore many of our local natural areas joined by a terrific line up of guest speakers. Spring Fling at Canter’s Cave

4-H Camp Scholarships Available!

Spring is here which means summer is just around the corner and summer brings with it 4-H Camp! Adams County 4-H Camp dates are set and planning has begun.

Dates for 2022 include:

Spring Fling, grades 3-6 – April 29 – 30

Beginner Camp, grades 3-5 – May 31 – June 3

Cloverbud Overnight, grades K-2, June 11-12

Junior High Camp, grades 6-8 – June 12-15

Special Needs Camp – June 17-19

Teen Camp, grades 9-12 – June 24-27

STEM Camp, grades 5-7 – June 29-July 1

We want to make sure that everyone that wants to go to camp has the opportunity. With that in mind the Adams County 4-H Advisory Committee is once again offering 4-H Camp Scholarships! Applications are available on the website or by stopping by the Extension Office. If you are a first time camper you should apply for the Camper of the Month scholarship. If you have been to camp before but need some assistance to get back, complete the Stan Harrison Family application.

Members can also participate in the Individual Fundraiser to raise money for camp! This year members have the opportunity to sell Pearl Valley Cheese. Order forms are available in the Extension Office. The 4-H Advisory Committee will collect these orders on April 11. Members are credited for all profits from the items they sell and can use the funds towards camp or other educational opportunities through 4-H. Ask your advisor or call the office for more information.

Camp Counselor Applications Due February 1

Apply to be a Camp Counselor at Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp in 2022!

4-H Camp Counselors are a group of 4-H teens selected to assist in being responsible for campers ages 8-18 during 4-H camp. As a result of participation, counselors will develop knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations needed for adult success, and the county 4-H program will be strengthened and expanded.

Roles and Responsibilities of 4-H Camp Counselors include:

  • Attend required trainings prior to camp including Counselor College on March 19 & 20 at Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp
  • Market and promote camp
  • Serve in a leadership and teaching role to other counselors
  • Serve on committees or other groups to plan programs at camp
  • Promote camper participation during camp
  • Lead and supervise campers in activities at camp including but not limited to songs, teambuilding challenges, group activities, challenges, etc.
  • Mentor and give guidance to campers to encourage positive youth development and enhancement of life skills.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be at least 14 years old as of January 1st. Pending the age of campers this may vary by camp and be older.
  • Must be able to get transportation to meetings and events as needed.
  • Must complete a minimum of 24 hours of training. (2 of these hours must be on-sight for first time counselors).
  • Must complete Child Abuse Awareness training.
  • Must Sign Standards of Behaviors, complete the Code of Conduct form, and have a current Ohio 4-H Health History form on file.
  • First time applicants must provide two references.
  • If the individual is 18+ year old at least two months prior to camp, the individual must have their background check conducted.

Carving New Ideas Teen Workshop

Carving New Ideas Teen Workshop
(for youth in grades 8 through 12)

 

Carving New Ideas (CNI) is a camping opportunity that focuses on critical thinking and program facilitation for 4-H members in grades 8-12. The workshop is held at the scenic 4-H Camp Ohio in St. Louisville, Ohio. Campers develop their leadership skills while making new friends from across Ohio and participating in fun activities. Camp counselors are college students at The Ohio State University. Adult staff members providing risk management, nursing services, and meals are staff and volunteers from Franklin County 4-H.

Check-in: Friday, October 29, 2021, 6:30pm – 8:00pm
Check-out: Sunday, October 31, 2021, 10:00am

All registrations are due by October 6, 2021.

4-H Camp Scholarships Due Friday, May 14

4-H Camp Scholarships are due to the Extension Office via email, fax, or drop box on Friday, May 14.  Applications are available here and should be completed by anyone planning to attend 4-H Camp at Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp in 2021.
First time campers are eligible for the Camper of the Day scholarship from the 4-H Advisory Committee.  This is a full scholarship for the cost of camp.  Each camp is eligible for two Camper of the Day scholarships.
The Harrison Family Scholarship is a partial scholarship based on financial need.  All campers are eligible for the Harrison Family scholarship and should apply!
Beginner Camp will be held June 1 – June 4th at the Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp in Jackson, OH. This camp is open to youth completing 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade in the 2020-2021 school year; youth do not have to be in 4-H to attend.  Beginner Camp will cost $127 for Adams County 4-H members thanks to a $20 camper scholarship awarded to all county 4-H members by the Adams County 4-H Advisory Committee and $157 for non-4-H members.  Register for Beginner Camp at go.osu.edu/ablmpbeginner before May 24.  More information about Beginner Camp can be found in the Beginner Camp letter.

Cloverbuds and their adult will spend the day exploring Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp including hiking, fishing, camp songs, games, crafts and more!  Lunch and a snack are included in the registration fee of $30 for a Cloverbud and their adult.  Each additional camper (Cloverbud or adult) will be an extra $15.  Register at go.osu.edu/21Cloverbud before June 1.

4-H Overnight Camping is On!

4-H Camp planning is now in full swing that Ohio 4-H received the go-ahead from OSU leadership to conduct overnight camping.  There are still many details to finalize but the Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp and Ohio 4-H Camping teams are working hard towards that goal.  We hope to have registration available later this week but in the meantime wanted to get the dates and camp scholarship information out to campers.

2021 Adams County 4-H Camp dates are:

  • Beginner Camp (grades 3-5): June 1st-4th
  • Cloverbud Family DAY Camp at Canter’s Cave: June 6th
  • Junior High Camp (grades 6-8): June 14th– 17th
  • Teen Camp: June 18th-21st

Scholarships for camp are available!  The Stan Harrison Scholarship is open to any camper based on financial need.  This is usually a partial camp scholarship to help make camp more affordable for families.  The Adams County 4-H Advisory Committee also awards the Camper of the Month scholarship.  This scholarship is for first time campers and preference is that two scholarships are awarded for each camp.  Camp scholarship applications are available on our website or at the Extension office and are due back to the office no later than May 14 by 4 p.m.

Tractor Supply Paper Clover Campaign

The Tractor Supply Paper Clover campaign runs from Oct. 7-18. Visit our West Union Tractor Supply to participate. Customers can purchase a paper clover at checkout and 90% of funds come back to Ohio counties to support scholarships for camp and leadership programs. To keep kids safe this fall, there will be no in-store promotions.

Exploration Kits from Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp

Did you miss Summer Camp? We did! Because we missed exploring our natural world during camp we decided to offer Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp Exploration Kits. The kits are specifically designed for youth ages 8 to 11, but can be adapted for use with all ages.

There will be one kit per month October through December, each containing 3-4 activities per kit. The kits will include instructions and all supplies needed to complete the activities to go with that month’s theme. The themes are: October – Ohio Trees, November – Native American History, and December – Hunting Fossils. Each kit will be $20 and must be ordered by the 25th of the month preceding. An invoice will be sent to the email address provided.
