Last Scheduled Quality Assurance Tuesday

The last scheduled Quality Assurance training in Adams County is Tuesday, April 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Adams County Fairgrounds.

Quality Assurance training is mandatory for livestock exhibitors planning to show at the 2022 Adams County Junior Fair or Ohio State Fair. QA must be completed at least 45 days prior to the start of exhibition (May 26, 2022).

We still have lots of members that need to complete QA to show.  If you have not completed, plan to attend tomorrow evening!

Spring Tag-in Saturday May 7

Mark your calendars! It’s Spring Tag-in time. Saturday, May 7. Feeder calves 8 a.m.-12 noon, goats 8-10 a.m., sheep 10-11 a.m.
Feeder calves will enter the Boyd Ave gate as usual. Dr. Stanfield will be on site to provide vaccination and/or castration if needed. If you are vaccinating your own cattle please be sure to complete and bring a copy of the vaccination record. All feeder calves must be vaccinated and should be boostered prior to the Adams County Fair.
Sheep and goats will be directed to the Larry Ave gate and weigh/tag in the rabbit barn. All sheep and goats MUST have a scrapie tag in order to weigh in. If your animal was not tagged when you purchased it, contact the breeder now to secure a scrapie identification tag.
There is a vendor fair scheduled on the grounds so please be cautious of foot traffic.

4-H Camp Registration Open!

Summer is coming and bringing with it 4-H camp at Canter’s Cave! Registration for Beginner Camp (grades 3-5) and Junior High Camp (grades 6-8) are now open.

The cost of Beginner and Junior High camp is $165 for 4-Hers and $175 for non 4-Hers. Adams County 4-H members will automatically receive a $20 discount courtesy of the Adams County Advisory Committee and funded by our annual candy sales, making their cost $145. This year every camper that registers will receive a 2022 Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp t-shirt!

If you would like to bunk with another camper, please reach out to them ahead of registering to coordinate. You will be choosing cabins using the online registration.

There are camp scholarships available to help offset the cost of 4-H camp! Applications are due May 13 and can be found here. We want every 4-Her that wants to attend camp to be able to go.

Youth finishing grades 3-5 are invited to join us May 31 – June 3 for Adams, Brown, Lawrence, Meigs, Pike Beginner Camp. Campers should register at http://go.osu.edu/ABLMPBeginner. Registration deadline is May 16.

Youth finishing grades 6-8 are invited to Canter’s Cave from June 12-15 for ABLMP Junior High Camp! Registration is at http://go.osu.edu/ABLMPJrHigh. Register before June 1 to secure your bunk!

Market Hog Registration Due May 1

Market hog tags are available for pickup in the Extension office. Please only request the number of tags you actually plan to use as we are trying our best to conserve tags that are in short supply. Registration is due May 1 in order to show at the 2022 Adams County Junior Fair. Log on to https://go.osu.edu/markethog22 and upload photos and information about your animal.
Tag should go in the hog’s left ear with the button on the inside of the ear and the tag on the back. Detailed identification instructions as well as Adams County Junior Fair requirements can be found at adams.osu.edu on the livestock page under swine.
There will be an OPTIONAL market hog weigh-in on Friday, May 6, 6-7 p.m. at the Adams County Fairgrounds Swine barn. Exhibitors that wish to compete for market hog production champion must weigh-in at this time.
Market hog exhibitors that plan to show at the Ohio State Fair must have a premise ID and 840 tags. Those exhibitors may submit their 840 identification number in place of an Adams County Junior Fair tag on their market hog registration.

Adams County 4-H Kids College

Kids College classes are filling up! Choose from Archery, Art, Cake Decorating, Fishing with Phipps, Food Fun, or STEM and complete project work, learn more about pre-fair judging, and leave with supplies to help complete your project. Cost is just $10. Register before April 15 at http://go.OSU.edu/KidsCollege22. Youth must be a 4-H project member to attend but do not have to be enrolled in the project area they choose to explore. Kids College is sponsored by Southern State Community College.

Rabbit Clinic – Thursday, April 21, 6 p.m.

Rabbit clinic is coming up next Thursday, April 21, 6 p.m. at the Adams County Fairgrounds. Travis West, Vinton County 4-H Educator, rabbit judge, and breeder will present on selection, care, and showing your rabbit project. We will cover Adams County Junior Fair requirements for rabbit projects and other opportunities available to members. Attendees will also receive their annual required quality assurance training.

There will not be an equipment vendor on site for this year’s clinic. Adams County 4-H Small Animal Committee members will be present and happy to help with any questions you have about equipment, rabbits, or project work.

Breeding rabbits that need tattooed should be brought to the clinic on April 21. This is optional for those who need assistance tattooing breeding animals.
