Join the ACADAOS Book Club

For those who are interested in joining the book club and participating in the first book reading, we will be holding online group discussions on the ACADAOS Goodreads account. The first book we will be reading is “Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less” by Greg McKeown. A new discussion question will be posted every Monday starting this week and running through to the in-person discussion on October 30th from 8:30am-10am at the Kuhn Honors & Scholars House, room 102.

Don’t worry if you haven’t started reading the book yet! You can jump in on the discussions at any point. Below are directions on how to join the ACADAOS Goodreads page and various ways to gain access to the book.

Join the ACADAOS Book Club Goodreads Page

  • What is Goodreads? Goodreads is a site where you can receive recommendations based on books you have read and topics you are interested in reading about, track books you have read and want to read, and participate in online conversations regarding books.
  • How do I join? If you already have a goodreads account, please join the group. You will be prompted to indicate an “@osu.edu” or “@buckeyemail.osu.edu” email address, which will then send you a confirmation email to that account. Then you can click the link, and you should have access. For those of you who do not have a goodreads account, you can go here: https://www.goodreads.com/ to create one.

Access to the Book

Participants are responsible for obtaining a copy of the book in order to participate. However, we have some suggestions for ways you can access the book:

  • The Ohio State Library and OhioLINK
  • The Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML)
    • For those of you on the Columbus Campus, it is an option to have your CML books sent to Thompson Library to pick-up.
    • CML also offers Audiobook and eBook options.
  • Purchase the book: Amazon, Half Price Books, and Barnes & Nobles have affordable deals on the book if you would prefer to purchase a copy.

Please let us know if you have any questions, and we look forward to some great discussions!

For those who participate in the first book reading, we will be holding intermittent group discussions on the ACADAOS Advisor Professional Development Carmen discussion board throughout August, September, and October culminating in an in-person discussion on October 30th from 8:30am-10am at the Kuhn Honors & Scholars House, room 102. While we are working on getting the first online discussion up and running, we would encourage you to start reading the book. Below are some additional details:

ACADAOS Workshop Series: Conference Proposal Ideas

In November, members of ACADAOS attended a workshop focused on brainstorming ideas for presentation proposals that could be submitted by advisors who were interested in presenting at various conferences. Sometimes, coming up with an idea can be the hardest part, so we thought we would share some of the ideas that were discussed (see below). Moving forward, we will be hosting a second workshop focused on how to write proposals for submission. This workshop will be held on Wednesday, January 24th from 3:30-5:00pm in Enarson 311. If you are interested in presenting on a topic listed below and/or are looking for others to present with, we would encourage you to contact Stephanie Elliott (elliott.302@osu.edu), so she can connect those who are interested in certain topics as soon as possible (especially if the conference you are considering requires submissions prior to the January 24th workshop).

NACADA Webinar “Mindset, Right to Fail, and Persistence: Academic Advising in Support of Student Success”

We would like to invite you to view the next NACADA Webinar “Mindset, Right to Fail, and Persistence: Academic Advising in Support of Student Success.”  However, we are going to try something different for viewing/discussion options for this webinar. We are going to offer an in-person viewing opportunity as a group and then a discussion afterwards, so you can participate in both or view the webinar on your own and then join in during the discussion. The information regarding the webinar can be found below:

Date: Wednesday, March 8, 2017

3pm-4pm: In-Person Viewing of Webinar

4pm-5pm: Webinar Discussion

Location: Fontana Lab Room 142

Click on the link to the event recording, which will be available to you through March 10, 2017. As with live attendance, we ask that this link only be shared with others on your campus.

This Event Handout is posted at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Events/Web-Events/Web-Event-Handouts.aspx.  If you missed getting it prior to the event, it will remain available for you there for at least the coming month.

Since we are trying something different, we want to make sure we have enough space for everyone. If you are planning to attend either or both options, please email Amanda Crall (crall.25@osu.edu) to RSVP.
