Advanced Competency

Advanced Competency in Professionalism and Humanism Leadership

The Advanced Competency in Professionalism and Humanism Leadership is designed for medical students that have experience in humanism focused programming during their first two years of medical school.  It is a seminar-based longitudinal study program for senior medical students.  Junior medical students may join the Advanced Competency upon application for early admittance.

The course centers on small group discussions, assigned journal readings, leadership development, ethics case studies and a student-designed senior project.  Throughout this course, each student seeks to define their own professional goals within the humanistic model of care and personal goals in exploring meaning and purpose in their own lives in medicine.

As emerging physicians and medical educators facing today’s challenges in medicine, this Advanced Competency invites a wide-ranging exploration of the building blocks needed to create humanistic environments in hospitals, medical offices, medical education spaces and the communities we serve.  This course offers pathways of discovery as each medical student prepares to join today’s community of compassionate and caring physicians.
