The function of the Reflectance sensors is to determine the distance that the AEV travels by detecting each time the wheel completes one rotation. One rotation is equivalent to eight marks on the wheel and the wheel has a circumference of 3.902 inches (each mark is 0.48775 inches). This information instrumental to completing our Mission Concept review because the it allowed the AEV to accelerate for a specific distance rather than time and then decelerated.
