Shape Grammar

Project Statement

My overall goal for this project was to support the principle of balance by using triangles and squares to create the feeling of wedged. In both the physical and digital versions, the straight lines between the shapes formed interesting positive and negative spaces that were visually appealing. As I created the image, I continued to enlarge the shapes as it was important to me that I kept it simple. I felt that having the shapes extending to the corners of the page as well as keeping it symmetrical, enhanced my final outcome of looking contained in the composition.

Reflection

Throughout this project I learned that in design you need to focus on the main objectives of your goal as a whole rather than one at a time. At the beginning of my process I was focusing only on the principle, balance, but not communicating the word wedged. Although this led me to creating a lengthy amount of iterations to explore, it also left me with no time to focus on the craft of my physical version. If I were to have balanced the amount of time spent on both the digital and physical versions, I would have met my goal sooner. The process of starting simpler and building off of that showed me that design is only as complicated as you make it. I now realize that once I lay out all of my ideas and look at them together, the process will become easier.
