Group Mean Comparison Workshop Series

Two-Part series-Workshops on group mean comparison by the EHE Quantitative Methodology Center (QMC)

The QMC is offering a two-part series on common group mean comparison methods in social sciences. These workshops will occur from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm on Wednesday, February 8th and Wednesday, February 22nd. The overall goals of the workshop series are to introduce how and in which research context to use different group mean comparison methods, including the independent sample t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), dependent sample t-test, and repeated measures ANOVA. These workshops do not require previous knowledge of the group mean comparison; however, having some experience with an introduction to statistics and SPSS is beneficial. Both workshops are free. Read below for more information about each workshop. You may register for either or both workshops, but you must register for each workshop separately.

Workshop 1: Introduction to the Independent Samples t-test and ANOVA, Wednesday, February 8th, from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm

This session will cover an introduction to the independent samples t-test and ANOVA. During the workshop, the instructor will perform how to do these analyses in SPSS. Join us for this FREE virtual hands-on workshop! Presented by the EHE QMC. Participants should have their own laptop with SPSS already installed.

Workshop 2: Introduction to the Dependent Samples t-test and Repeated Measures ANOVA, Wednesday, February 22nd, from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm

This session will cover an introduction to the dependent samples t-test and repeated measures ANOVA. During the workshop, the instructor will perform how to do these analyses in SPSS. Join us for this FREE virtual hands-on workshop! Presented by the EHE QMC. Participants should have their own laptop with SPSS already installed.

This event will be presented with automated closed captions. If you wish to request traditional CART services or other accommodations, please contact Brian Timm at timm.21@osu.edu or 614-247-6490. Requests made by February 1 will generally allow us to provide seamless access, but the university will make every effort to meet requests made after this date.

March

Statistical Moderation Workshop Series

The Quantitative Methodology Center (QMC) is organizing two free workshops on Statistical Moderation between 1:00 and 2:30 pm Eastern on Wednesdays, March 22, 2023, and March 29, 2023, conducted through Zoom. Participants may register for either or both workshops but need to register for each workshop separately. We strongly encourage participants to register for both workshops. Following your registration through the links below, a calendar invite including Zoom details will be sent to the email address that you indicate when registering for the workshops.

We believe in the value of the integration of conceptualization of statistical knowledge and a hands-on approach in the capacity-building process for quantitative research. Accordingly, we develop the workshop series in the following way:

Workshop 1: Conceptual Understanding of Moderation

Wednesday, March 29, from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm:

The workshop will first develop a conceptual understanding of moderation. To aid in conceptualizing the advanced method, this session will cover how it may be useful to answer research questions in social science.

The first workshop has concluded; you can watch the recording workshop by clicking the link here.

Additionally, click here to view the PowerPoint slides presented during this workshop.

Workshop 2: Hands-On Moderation Exercises

Wednesday, April 5, from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm:

The second workshop has concluded; you can watch the recording workshop by clicking the link here.

Additionally click here to view the PowerPoint slides presented during this workshop.

Click here to watch a supplemental video on three-way interactions, which was cut for time.

The workshop will include examples worked through by the instructor on datasets, which participants can follow, and exercises to practice the skills just learned.

You should have a working knowledge of the principles and practice of multiple linear regression. R will be used for the workshop. Please don’t worry if you have not yet used R, as the instructor will walk through each step during the demonstration phase. Before attending, participants are expected to have R and RStudio (i.e., a software application that makes R easier to use) downloaded and available on your computers. Please see the installation instruction below.

Installing R

  • Go to the R Project for Statistical Computing webpage: https://www.r-project.org/
  • Once on the R Project for Statistical Computing webpage, follow the instructions under Getting Started.
    • You will first be asked to choose a CRAN Mirror at a location that is close to you.
      • A CRAN Mirror a collection of web servers, each with an identical copy of all the information on the comprehensive R archive network.
        • Choosing the mirror that is closest to you reduces internet traffic.

Installing RStudio

  • After installing R, install RStudio to use as the interface for using R.
  • Go to the RStudio webpage: https://rstudio.com/
    • Once on the RStudio webpage, click on DOWNLOAD RSTUDIO.
    • There are several RStudio versions to choose from.
      • Most people choose the free RStudio Desktop version.
