Quantitative Talk: Spatial Social Network Analysis

Social network analysis (SNA) is a powerful tool for investigating the dynamics of interpersonal relationships in geographic space. By adding the geographic component to both the nodes and edges, it allows us to find the travel time between individuals, the intervening features that may help relationships, and new features of the nodes (from Census data, land use, etc.). It also allows us to measure homophily between agents from different administrative units/neighborhoods and different cultural areas. As such, we can test for correlations between geographic features and social ties and compare networks over space and time.
Dr. Andris will present several research techniques that can be generalized to other kinds of spatially-embedded networks and discuss best practices for collecting and modeling these kinds of data. This work draws upon both SNA and Geographic Information Systems/Science (GIS) principles by measuring node and graph properties and linking these properties to environmental features for simultaneous assessment (e.g., hot spots and network centrality).
