Congratulations to the Fairfield County Livestock Judging Team on their outstanding showing last week at the Ohio State Fair contest.
In their first effort on the State level in a ‘general livestock’ contest, the Junior Team finished as the 6th high team! Individually, junior team member Allie Poston was 4th high Overall, 5th in Oral Reasons, 4th in Beef, 9th in Sheep and 10th in Swine. Derek Burns also received individual honors by finishing 8th in Sheep. Lauren and Emma Preston, Lexi Smith, and Ethan Kaper also represented the Fairfield County Team in the junior division. Micah Jensen and James Smith competed in the Senior division. The team is coached by Justin Bachman and Trey Miller.
For those who may not be familiar with livestock judging, it’s one of the most challenging projects a youth can participate in, and gives young people many valuable opportunities to develop skills that will help them for the rest of their lives. Livestock judging:
- Enhances decision making capabilities and critical thinking skills
- Oral reasons provide the framework for public speaking skills
- Builds character, integrity and honesty
- Allows youth to network with other individuals and producers who share similar interest
Youth interested in participating need no prior formal training. They only need to have an interest in gaining livestock industry knowledge and a willingness to learn. Contact coaches Trey Miller or Justin Bachman at fairfieldlivestockjudging@hotmail.com for information about the practice schedule and future contests.
The coaches and team members are to be commended for their effort at the 2015 Ohio State Fair. CONGRATULATIONS!
