Thanks from the Fairfield County Cattlemen Association

Thanks for your support during the recent 174th edition of the Fairfield County Fair! As always,  the Steak Trailer was open throughout the event collectively serving more than a ton (2,000 lbs) of beef to hungry fairgoers. Proceeds from sales in the Steak Trailer allowed the Cattlemen to support the Jr. Fair Livestock Auction through the purchase of 6 steers, plus two steers purchased in cooperation with Rushcreek Feed & Supply. And will also help to fund our youth scholarship program.

The Cattlemen also provided 27 pizzas for the Jr. Beef Exhibitor meeting on Saturday evening after move-in to the Fair, and 10 dozen donuts for the youth on beef show day.

It’s also notable that mulch bedding was provided for each junior beef exhibitor in the Brick L Barn by the 2024 Jr. Beef Barn sponsors, FCCA members Horn Farms of Pleasantville. And the FCCA, also sponsored a PeeWee Shomanship class for 25 young beef children who wanted to lead a calf around the ring!

Mark your calendars now for the Post Fair Beef Exhibitor Meeting slated for Wednesday, November 20.  Details to follow!!

Thirty years later, the mission of the Fairfield County Cattlemen’s Association continues to be to focus their efforts on beef education, promotion and encouraging youth and adults in beef cattle management and production

Join friends at State Fair and volunteer today.

Ohio Cattlemen’s Association District 9 Director Jim Jepsen invites you to join him on Friday, August 2, from 10:30 to 2:30 and help promote beef during the 2024 Ohio State Fair! You will be helping Jim at the Steak Barn located just north of the Voinovich Livestock Pavilion. Your Checkoff Dollars Promote Beef!

Ohio’s checkoff dollars are spent under the direction of 15 Ohio cattlemen collectively known as the Ohio Beef Council

As you know, anytime we market a beef animal $2.00 per head is deducted from our check and submitted to what’s called the “Checkoff.” It’s collected on all cattle – beef or dairy, feeders, fed cattle, breeding stock and culls – that are marketed, and even our youth pay the Checkoff on the animals they market at the Fair!

Often times the question is asked, “What’s the checkoff, and what’s it used for?” Let’s take a minute to explore that question, and then look at a small example of what those checkoff dollars are spent on, including a project that Fairfield County’s cattlemen recently participated in.

By law, all producers selling cattle or calves, for any reason and regardless of age or sex, must pay $1-per-head to support beef/veal promotion, research and information through the Beef Promotion and Research Act created by the 1985 Farm Bill. As of March 2014, in the state of Ohio all producers selling cattle or calves must pay an additional $1-per-head through the Ohio Beef Marketing Program Referendum. Thus, in Ohio, $2.00 is deducted from the sale price of every beef animal when it is sold. This happens regardless of where the animal is sold . . . youth pay it for each of the project animals they sell, auction barns collect it from Continue reading Your Checkoff Dollars Promote Beef!

Fairfield County Cattlemen’s Association earns Outstanding County Award

Congratulations to the Fairfield County Cattlemen’s Association on recently receiving the Outstanding County Award! In their press release, the OCA said it like this . . .

The Fair, Upcoming Events, Deadlines & Congratulations!

Congratulations FCCA on being named the 2020 Outstanding Ohio County Cattlemen’s Organization

FCCA members and area cattlemen and women . . . hopefully you’ve successfully concluded a safe and productive harvest, the cows are preg checked (or getting bred if you’re a fall calver), and you have enough high quality feed for winter!

We wanted to get an update out to you with regard to the Fair, and other activities, events and programs on the horizon.

Fairfield County Jr. Beef Show & Fair Livestock Sale: It’s a pleasure to report that beef numbers were up again this year. Fifty four youth exhibited a total of 67 market steers and heifers, feeder calf numbers were up slightly, and breeding beef numbers were stable. This is the most since 2007, and many are anticipating even higher numbers next year. And, the Jr Fair Livestock Sale was a success. Due in part to the support of the FCCA, no market beef animal sold for less than $1000 premium in the sale. FCCA purchased two calves, plus, added $25 on to each market beef exhibitor’s sale price at a total cost of $3450 to FCCA.

“Beef Families Care” Grant sends beef to local food pantries: At their pre-Fair FCCA Board meeting in September, the Directors voted to participate in the Beef Families Care cost-share program that is providing ground beef to local food pantries. FCCA provided $300 that was combined with donations of $300 from the local Blue Ribbon Showmen 4-H Club, $300 from OSU’s Ohio Collegiate Cattle Club, and $393 that was donated in the Continue reading The Fair, Upcoming Events, Deadlines & Congratulations!

Beef, and the Fair!

With the Fair less than two weeks away, make your plans now to attend, and participate, and enjoy!

First, as always, the Fairfield County Cattleman’s Association “Steak” Trailer will be in it’s usual location – northwest of the track and across from the beef barn – serving the best beef sandwiches on the grounds. This year’s menu again features two great old-time favorites . . . the Cattleman’s ribeye steak sandwich, and the 6 oz. cheeseburger! Perhaps best of all, the menu features locally grown beef, harvested and processed right here at Bay Packing, and served by the folks who are involved in raising it. If you and your family would enjoy serving a shift in the trailer, there are only a few shifts remaining available. Simply check in with local Cattlemen’s Association President Ray Breagel (740-503-3120) and he’ll get you signed up. The majority of the proceeds from the Steak Trailer go to support local Continue reading Beef, and the Fair!

The Steak Trailer; Featuring local beef served by the Cattlemen who raise it!

The Warthman’s will be at your service during the first shift on Sunday, the 6th!

Years ago, innovative merchandisers such as Colonel Sanders, Bob Evans, and Orvil Reddenbacher discovered the benefit of associating the face of the producer to the product that was being marketed. The same benefits are evident at “commodity” food stands located at places like State and County Fairs . . . none the least of which is the Fairfield County Fair. It can only add to consumer confidence in a product when they know producers and their families are willing to “show their face” at the point of Continue reading The Steak Trailer; Featuring local beef served by the Cattlemen who raise it!

LOTS of BEEF activities at this year’s Fair!

With the Fair only two weeks away this is a great opportunity to do a little preview of all the beef related activities fair goers can enjoy throughout the week. While not necessarily an ‘activity’ for some, the very first thing to mention is the Fairfield County Cattleman’s Association “Steak” Trailer will be in it’s usual location – northwest of the track and across from the beef barn. This year’s menu features two great old-time favorites . . . the Cattleman’s 7 oz. ribeye steak sandwich, and the best 6 oz. cheeseburger found anywhere! As always, the menu will feature locally grown beef, harvested and processed right here at Bay Packing.

Perhaps even better, when you visit the Steak Trailer you’ll again be served by folks who are involved in raising the beef. If you and your family would enjoy serving a shift in the trailer, there are some opportunities remaining. Simply check in with local Cattlemen’s Association Director Ray Breagel (740-503-3120) and he’ll get you signed up. The majority of the proceeds from the Steak Trailer go to support local youth through the Jr. Fair Market Beef Sale and also college scholarships.

If you enjoy a good Dairy Beef Feeder Calf show, that launches Tuesday’s full day of beef show activities at 8:30 a.m. in the round dairy barn. Also on Tuesday the 9th, the Junior Beef Show will begin at 10 a.m. with Continue reading LOTS of BEEF activities at this year’s Fair!
