With the Fair only two weeks away this is a great opportunity to do a little preview of all the beef related activities fair goers can enjoy throughout the week. While not necessarily an ‘activity’ for some, the very first thing to mention is the Fairfield County Cattleman’s Association “Steak” Trailer will be in it’s usual location – northwest of the track and across from the beef barn. This year’s menu features two great old-time favorites . . . the Cattleman’s 7 oz. ribeye steak sandwich, and the best 6 oz. cheeseburger found anywhere! As always, the menu will feature locally grown beef, harvested and processed right here at Bay Packing.
Perhaps even better, when you visit the Steak Trailer you’ll again be served by folks who are involved in raising the beef. If you and your family would enjoy serving a shift in the trailer, there are some opportunities remaining. Simply check in with local Cattlemen’s Association Director Ray Breagel (740-503-3120) and he’ll get you signed up. The majority of the proceeds from the Steak Trailer go to support local youth through the Jr. Fair Market Beef Sale and also college scholarships.
If you enjoy a good Dairy Beef Feeder Calf show, that launches Tuesday’s full day of beef show activities at 8:30 a.m. in the round dairy barn. Also on Tuesday the 9th, the Junior Beef Show will begin at 10 a.m. with Senior Showmanship in the Feeder Creek Show Arena north of the track. Showmanship will be followed by the breeding beef show, with the feeder calves going in the ring after that and prior to lunch break.
Back by popular demand, PeeWee Beef Showmanship – for those very young cattle men & ladies who are not yet old enough for a 4-H livestock project – will be held in the Show Arena over the lunch break of the Jr Beef Show. If you’d enjoy a preview of what’s coming in future years, this exhibition by our up and coming very young cattle producers will entertain you as well. You won’t want to miss this! Pre-entry is not required and all the details can be found on page 32 of the Open Class Fairbook.
Immediately following PeeWee Showmanship, the market beef show will begin. In addition to the Grand and Reserve Champion Market Beef animals, your Champion Bred, Born and Raised here in Fairfield County market animals will also be selected.
On Wednesday be sure you stop by the AgMazing Agricenter between 1 and 3 p.m. when the Lancaster Culinary Arts program students will be cooking with beef. They will be demonstrating why they have been so successful in the Burger Boom Competition at the Ohio State Fair, and rumor has it you’ll also get to sample their now famous beef sliders!
On Thursday morning the open beef show begins at 10 a.m. in the Feeder Creek Arena. Featured again this year will be the Best of Fairfield County Bred, Born, Raised & Registered Beef Cattle class.
After you’ve enjoyed the open beef cattle show, be sure to hang around for Junior Fair Livestock Sales that kickoff with the market steers and heifers at 5:00 p.m. on the 11th in the Feeder Creek Arena.
To conclude the beef related activities for the week, the 32nd annual open class “Mt Pleasant Show Down” feeder calf show will get underway at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Entries are accepted on show day and all the rest of the details can be found linked here.
See you beginning October 7th at the Fair!
