Jr. Fair Market Steer/Heifer Weigh-in

Area youth who plan to show a market steer or market heifer in the 2016 Fairfield County Junior Beef Show must have their animals weighed in, tagged (with both visual and EID tags), and nose printed on Saturday, March 5 at the Fairfield Cattle Company beginning at 8:30 a.m..

The Fairfield Cattle Company is located on Bowen Road in Canal Winchester, Ohio.

Those exhibitors who would like to complete their paperwork ahead of time and simply bring it along will find the calf registration form is linked here in PDF format.

The County Bred, Born and Raised form is linked here.

Highlighted below are a few of the changes in the Beef Show, NEW for 2016, adopted by the Sr. Fair Board at their January 19, 2016 meeting:

This year the Jr Beef Show will be on Tuesday, October 11 beginning at 10 a.m.

All beef exhibitors are now required to complete a housing form for all beef animals by the designated possession date. These forms will be maintained in the Sr. Fair Board office. Here’s a link to the Livestock & Horse Possession Form that is now required for each beef animal that each youth maintains for their project. Every exhibitor must submit a completed form at weigh-in on the 5th.

More than one beef animal per class may now be entered at the Fair. The new rule adopted by the Board simply reads: Up to 6 total animals may be entered with no more than 2 being finished market beef animals. One of the market beef animals from Class 7 may also be entered in the Class 10 as a Carcass Market Beef animal (steer or heifer).

The top 15 Performance Carcass Steers/Heifers will make the sale regardless of how they may place in the “live” show.

A market animal must weigh at least 1100 pounds to be eligible to show for champion and sell individually. There will be no re-weighs. Underweight market animals will be shown in their own class and may also be used for showmanship. Underweight animals will be offered a packer bid or may go home after the sale (and must be out of the barn by 10:00 p.m. on Thursday).

Minimum weight for beef feeder calves is now 300 pounds, with the maximum remaing at 700 pounds.

The Registered Champion beef female will no longer show against the Crossbred Champion.

There are a few additional changes and adjustments to the beef show rules that were adopted at the most recent Fair Board meeting. Those along with the ones listed above will be included in the 2016 Junior Fair Book when it comes out. In the meantime here’s a link to the February 2016 Fairfield County Junior Fair Beef Newsletter further detailing all the changes.

For those who are wondering how many local youth are exhibiting market beef these days, here’s a link to a post from last fall that shows that information for the past several years.
