Earth Science

Composition of Earth and Planets – Students will model the inside of the Earth and other planets and understand radii and diameter of a circle.

Cookie Mining Lab – Students will learn about renewable and nonrenewable resources while working through a cookie mining lab.

Measuring Weather part 1 – Students will learn how air and water relate to weather and weather changes.

Measuring Weather part 2 – Students will learn how air and water relate to weather and weather changes.

Planting – Students will be planting seeds and learn how to maintain their plant.

Phases of the Moon – Students will explore how moon phases arise, how they change with the lunar cycle, and why certain phases are visible at certain times.

Rain and Clouds – Students will learn about the cycle of water through rain and clouds.

Soil Erosion – Students will visually see the importance of vegetation cover and how
it prevents soil erosion.

Engineering

Catapults – Students will build catapults which will allow them to test a scientific concept, change variables, and record the experimental outcome.

Egg Drop – Students will learn to use their creativity and basic knowledge of forces to design their own “Egg Shock Absorber.”

Falling Marbles – This is a fun, energetic engineering exercise in which teamwork, problem solving, and communication skills are emphasized.

Holding Weight – Students will use the engineering design process to build a support structure using specific materials and requirements.

Marker Robots – Students will use a simple design process to design and construct Marker Robots using cups, markers, tape, and rotating motors.

Oil Spill – Students will learn about oil spills, how they affect our natural environment, and how to clean it up.

Squishy Circuits – Students will explore the properties of electricity and create their own circuits with dough.

Life Science

Camouflage – Students will learn the process through which animals blend into their environment for survival.

Dissecting Fruits and Vegetables – Students will dissect an assortment of fruits and vegetables to observe the differences between them.

Ecosystems – Students will learn the relationship and impact of living things in the environment.

Strawberry DNA Extraction – Students will observe DNA is in all living organisms and how to extract them from cells.

Leaf Chromatography – Students will learn that leafs contain different color pigments which give them their color. They will separate these pigments through chromatography.

Planting – Students will be planting seeds and learn how to maintain their plant.

Physical Science

Hot Fries Calorimetry – Students will explore calorimetry with Cheetos.

Edible Landfill – Students learn about how landfills are made by creating their own with delicious treats.

Electromagnetic and Emergency Lightbulb – Students will learn that electric circuits require a complete loop of conducting materials through which an electrical energy can be transferred.

Falling Marbles and Motion – This is a fun, energetic engineering exercise in which teamwork, problem solving, and communication skills are emphasized.

Dr. Brunelli’s Filtration Process – In this activity was developed by Dr. Nick Brunelli, students will explore filtration with M&M’s.

Getting Silly with Putty – Students will be introduced to the concept of polymers and their structure, as well as properties associated with them.

Gummy Bear Lights and Disappearing Beaker – Students use colored LEDs and gummy bears to investigate light and matter interactions.

Iron in Cereal – Students will learn that the iron needed in our bodies is the same as the iron that we are used to seeing (i.e. in nails) using properties of magnetism.

Solids, Liquids, Gases – Students will observe the different physical properties of water, and how they can chance.

Sounds Waves – Students will observe sound traveling through different mediums, and how the change in a sound’s pitch relates to the rate of vibration.

Tools of the Trade – Students will learn how to properly use lab instruments as well as simple lab safety techniques.
