Elections for serving on the executive board of the Pre-Optometry club took place over zoom, where candidates gave a short speech about themselves and club members voted for who they wanted to serve for each leadership position. A raffle also took place for giveaways on gift cards and OAT prep materials.

Students had the opportunity to dissect a cow’s eye with the help of Dr. Delgado-Nixon, where she thoroughly demonstrated how to dissect the eye. She provided a detailed explanation of what to look out for in the eye and what each part of the eye represented. She also presented to students about eye anatomy as well as ocular diseases.

Dr. Anderson spoke to students about research in optometry. Dr. Anderson presented to club members about what it means to be an optometrist working in research, how optometry impacts research, as well as what to expect working in research.

Candace Johnson, assistant director of admissions at OSU College of Optometry, demonstrated to club members how to navigate the OptomCas application and website. Candace provided students with a step-by-step approach on filling out the application and what is expected in each application section. She answered questions regarding optometry school, the application, and the OAT.

Karissa Sworski from SUNY College of Optometry came in to speak about SUNY’s program and what they have to offer. She introduced students to the college and discussed program details along with what to expect when applying, the curriculum, environment, and cost.

Dr. Aschenbener spoke to students about pediatric optometry and vision therapy. She talked through her experiences that paved the way to get her to where she is now and why she chose to pursue pediatric care and vision therapy. Dr. Aschenbener provided students with the pros and cons of working in pediatric care. She gave students advice on getting into optometry school and being a competitive applicant as well as what to expect.

The personal statement workshop allowed students to learn and understand what is expected on a personal statement. Students were shown a presentation about how to write and construct their personal statements when it comes to applying for optometry school. The presentation provided students with steps on how to compose their own drafts and what sorts of information to include in the personal statement.
