Dan McCarthy is currently the Meteorologist in Charge at the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Indianapolis, IN, and has been in this position since September 2007. As Meteorologist in Charge in Indianapolis, Dan has arranged and coordinated decision support services for emergency operations at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Super Bowl XLVI in 2012. He manages a staff of 24 meteorologists and other personnel who are responsible for the protection of life and property for 38 counties in central Indiana.
Dan has written numerous studies on tornadoes and tornado outbreaks by calculating annual tornado and severe storm statistics for the country. He served on the original Enhanced Fujita Scale committee in 2003, and has written conference papers on tornado, hail, and thunderstorm damaging wind trends across the United States. Dan also is a member of the International Association of Emergency Managers and has held positions in the American Meteorological Society and National Weather Association.
