Courses

The Earth: How it Works (EARTHSCI-1100): This course provides a general overview of the four major systems of Earth Science: lithosphere (earth surface and interior), atmosphere (air, wind, weather), biosphere (living material), hydrosphere (oceans, lakes, rivers, groundwater, glaciers). Emphasis will be placed on showing how the Earth systems are connected. The goal of the course is to provide students with a basic understanding of Earth Science so that they can understand and evaluate current related topics in the media, have a foundation for future study in Earth science, and gain an appreciation for the complexity and beauty of the Earth. ES1100 Syllabus

Principles of Oceanography (EARTHSCI-2206): This course provides a general overview of the four major areas of oceanography: marine chemistry (seawater chemistry and some aspects of biological oceanography), marine biology (marine ecosystems, reproductive biology, and behavioral ecology), marine geology (plate tectonics, sediments, and coastal geology), and physical oceanography (ocean and atmospheric circulation, and waves). The goal of the course is to provide students with a basic understanding of the oceans so that they can understand and evaluate current ocean topics in the media, have a foundation for future study in oceanography, and gain an appreciation for the complexity and beauty of the oceans. Advanced Oceanography (EARTHSCI-5206):  This course provides a detailed overview of the four major areas of oceanography: marine chemistry (seawater chemistry and some aspects of biological oceanography), marine biology (marine ecosystems, reproductive biology, and behavioral ecology), marine geology (plate tectonics, sediments, and coastal geology), and physical oceanography (ocean and atmospheric circulation, and waves). The goal of the course is to provide students with a strong foundation in oceanography in preparation for upper level study. This course include a field trip to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and to the Reef Systems Coral Farm (see photos below).  ES5206 Syllabus

Stable Isotope Biogeochemistry (EARTHSCI-5622): The course focuses on both theoretical and applied aspects of stable light isotope biogeochemistry so that students can: 1- understand and critically evaluate research articles containing stable isotopic data, and 2- see how isotopes might be used to enhance or broaden their own research. Emphasis is placed on carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen with some introduction to boron, hydrogen, and sulfur isotopes.  Stable isotope techniques, applications of stable isotopes in research, and introduction to mass spectrometry will form the applied component of the course. Students get some hands-on experience in sample preparation, sample analysis, data correction, and data interpretation. ES5622 Syllabus
