Hello
My name is Ellie Gold and I am from St. Louis, Missouri. I am a first year student enrolled in the design foundations program. In high school, I was always an athlete and spent my free time making art. After an injury sophomore year, I had to reinvent myself and spent a lot of time painting, making videos, and designing art for my room. What started as a hobby, soon became an outlet during a stressful time. My mom is a graphic designer and my dad is in video production and marketing. Their influence exposed me to the process of good design and project management. I realized that I wanted to pursue a career path in a creative field.
In high school, I took ceramics, painting 1&2, graphic design, website & design and other creative courses. I enjoy getting out of my comfort zone and exploring different mediums. Outside of design, I love hanging with my friends and family, listening to music, traveling, and experiencing new things.
I would describe myself as an energetic, creative, problem solver and self-starter and love to collaborate with people with similar interests.
My Reflection
“Every great design begins with an even better story.” -Lorinda Mando
When I think about design I’ve always lacked the confidence to retell a story. People thought I was shy or disinterested. I feel I can articulate a story better when I’m able to communicate it visually. Design is like a puzzle I find satisfaction in solving a problem and experimenting with different solutions. I’ve been able to gain confidence by using my creativity and this has helped me in all aspects of my life.
But when it came to creating videos, taking photos, or even just painting, I found that I could express myself visually. Gradually I’ve been able to gain the confidence by using my creativity more than expressing it. I love to think about design from the users point of view and making that personal connect. I enjoy how design isn’t about being right or wrong but more about how your solution connects to the person, place or thing you’re designing for. You have to create in order to think, rather than think in order to create.
My Why: Design Foundations
I am a visual learner and when deciding to attend OSU, I was excited that it offered me everything I love about a big school, but most importantly, the Design Foundations program was so well suited to my learning style. Being able to attend a big school but be in a program that has a much smaller community is the best of both worlds. I learn best by being hands-on and collaborating with other people. I’m excited to get to know my classmates and be able to have a connection with all the professors. I’m interested in learning more about how my general interest in design can be applied to branding and interiors.
