DIY Bandanas with Plant Dyes

2 – 4 PM

Hopkins Hall 340

RSVP here!

Join the Living Art and Ecology Lab to learn more about the world of plant-based color through this hands-on workshop! Participants will dye their own cotton bandanas using plant-based dyes such as indigo and madder root, creating unique patterns on their fabric via resist dyeing techniques. Throughout the crafting process they will also learn about the rich history of natural dyes and how humans have been making and utilizing plant colors for millennia.

Since the development of lab-synthesized pigments from coal tar in the mid-1800s, most of the fabrics we encounter are dyed using petrochemicals. In order to imagine a future divested from fossil fuels, LAEL seeks to put the tools for creating color back into the hands of artists, teaching about sources of plant-based pigments and providing opportunities for students to develop the skills necessary to harness them.

Note: Registration for this event is required. Participants are encouraged to wear clothes and shoes that they are ok with getting dirty as dyes can stain clothes.
