Panel on Intersectional Environmentalism

The concept of intersectionality started with Kimberle Crenshaw in 1989, when she published a paper called “Demarginalizing the Intersection of Race and Sex” that centered on the ways that racism and sexism can both be experienced by black women and argued that these methods of discrimination should be considered together rather than separately. Since then, the idea has gained mainstream traction and expanded to address the ways that many social justice issues overlap. In some situations, the current use of the term is quite different from the way that Crenshaw originally defined it and the idea has been misrepresented by both liberal and conservative activists to serve their agendas.
The Sierra Club Student Coalition has partnered with the Native American and Indigenous People’s Cohort and Net Impact to bring you a panel discussion that will explore the ways that intersectionality applies to the environmental movement and break down what it means today. We are very excited to introduce our four panel speakers: Saad Amer, Michael Charles, Wanjiku Gatheru, and Dr. Deondre Smiles. Join us for an enlightening conversation that looks toward the future of environmental advocacy!
