Measuring Masters

Becoming sick is a part of life. Typically, we’re able to learn how sick we are from procedures at hospitals or doctors’ offices. These procedures are classified as invasive procedures or noninvasive procedures. An invasive procedure is a medical procedure where something has to enter your body to take a measurement (a noninvasive procedure requires nothing to enter your body). Invasive procedures are inconvenient and uncomfortable for patients and may be difficult to perform. So, researchers are looking to replace invasive procedures with noninvasive ones. One such way is by creating a noninvasive wearable sensor (like a watch or armband) that takes measurements of chemicals, like acetone, found within the body. These sensors react to acetone (or other chemicals) and send that information to a phone so the patient can learn about their health in real-time. From there, patients are able to see if they need more medical care.

Measuring Masters TEK8 Student Handout
The student handout will be given to all students working on the design challenge. It gives a brief recap of the story, it helps the students identify what they are attempting to achieve, and it recaps the design process.

Measuring Masters TEK8 Facilitator Guide
This Instructor’s Guide provides the instructor additional information on how to run the design challenge with alternatives for materials and test setups as well as information to help make the design challenge a good educational experience.

Telling the Story Video

The Telling the Story Video conveys the societal impact of the student’s research that is the basis for the design challenge and will set the problem-solving context for students.

Design Challenge Video

The Design Challenge Video leads students through the design process. It indicates materials available, states what the criteria are for success and any constraints. It also gives a second ‘level’ of the design challenge that allows ‘early completers’ to move on to a slightly more difficult challenge.
