2020 Design Challenges

2020 Design Challenges Available

A document containing a brief description of the TEK8 program and all the facilitator’s guides and the student handouts for all of the 2020 design challenges is available here. The guides and videos are also available by clicking on each design challenge in the table below. This year a TEK8 Design Storyboard was developed as a tool to help students record their progress through the design process.

Title Description Engineering Area

Repair damage to an airplane after a UAV collision.

Mechanical Engineering
Design a sensor that can alert someone that a door has been opened. Electrical Engineering
Design a NanoDyn force sensor with household supplies. Biomedical Engineering
Build a balanced drone frame. Aerospace Engineering
Design a buoy to hold a generator that uses the motion of waves. Electrical Engineering
Design light barrier that can change states allowing varying amounts of light to pass. Materials Science Engineering
Design the smallest cut possible for a surgeon to complete an organ transplant through. Biomedical Engineering

Create a code to properly sort objects until there is one item left standing at the end.

Biomedical Engineering
Build a pericellular matrix (PCM) around your cell to stop water from leaking out when a force is applied. Biomedical Engineering

Build a power plant structure around the generator that can take on weather elements of rain, hail and wind.

Electrical Engineering

Design a structure around a small object that protects the object when in the human body.

Biomedical Engineering
Create a neural network that can determine what animal is in a picture. Electrical and Computer Engineering

Build a sorter so that the computer can tell the difference between 2 different types of data.

Computer Science and Engineering
Build a filter that can both clean the water effectively and be built quickly. Environmental (Civil) Engineering
