2022 Design Challenges Available
A document containing a brief description of the TEK8 program and all the facilitator’s guides and the student handouts for all of the 2022 design challenges is available here. The guides and videos are also available by clicking on each design challenge in the table below. In 2020 a TEK8 Design Storyboard was developed as a tool to help students record their progress through the design process.
Title | Description | Engineering Area |
Design a sleeve device that can be used to measure the angle of their arm. |
Biomedical Engineering
Design an anemometer that can measure wind speed and direction. |
Environmental (Civil) Engineering
Design a flux tower that is able to survive environmental conditions. |
Environmental (Civil) Engineering
Design a camera system that can withstand vibrations in the system. |
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Design an algorithm that that can sort images into predetermined groups. |
Computer Science and Engineering
Design a flood barrier to protect a home from rising water levels. |
Environmental (Civil) Engineering
Using an inclusive approach to engineering, students will design a “D-Inclusion Lamp”. |
Engineering Education
Design a “zeolite” that is able to capture the most molecules possible. |
Chemical Engineering | |
Redesign a nose cone of an aircraft to better withstand collisions with drones. |
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Design a Balsa Wood plane that is able to fly prescribed distance and land without breaking. |
Aerospace Engineering
Starting with a broken kidney component (nephron), repair it so it can filter and clean “blood”. |
Biomedical Engineering
Design effective structures to deliver the DNA to the cancer cells. Students must fold a structure using the provided materials that can hold the cancer drugs and attach to the cancer cells. |
Biomedical Engineering
Design a device that can guide air from an air mattress pump to move green pom-poms in an assortment of colorful pom-poms. |
Environmental (Civil) Engineering
Design a “gas turbine” that is able to spin a sufficient speed without rubbing the casing. |
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Design a sensor or device that can indicate when vibration is present. |
Mechanical Engineering
Students will design a wetland that is able to protect a building from flood conditions. |
Environmental (Civil) Engineering |
