In the face of an unrelenting drug epidemic that is devastating Ohio and the nation, Ohio State has established the Opioid Innovation Fund, a grant program designed to leverage the university’s expertise and resources to hasten solutions to the crisis. More than $1 million is available and will be distributed in grants of up to $100,000. Teams are encouraged to include partners in the public and private sectors, but each team must be led by an Ohio State faculty or staff member to be eligible for the grants. The deadline to submit pre-proposals is Friday (11/3) at 5 p.m.

Tech Hub Student Project Grants – Deadline is October 29
The Tech Hub Student Project Grants program awards funding annually to between 3 and 5 student projects that exhibit a connection to technology. This can mean hosting an event, producing innovative art or developing a for-profit product. Last year we awarded a total of $10,000 and this year we hope to fund even more student projects with our increased award pool of $15,000. Applications for 2017 funding are open now and will close Sunday, October 29 at midnight. Students from all majors and academic tracks are encouraged to apply.

Undergraduate students invited to apply for Propel Ohio collegiate leadership summit
Propel Ohio is a leadership program that promotes civic engagement and inspires undergraduate students to grow into civic leaders in Ohio. Undergraduate students are invited to apply to participate in Propel Ohio: Collegiate Leadership Summit 2017, which will be held on Friday, Nov. 17 at the University of Akron. The program will actively engage with college students on issues that affect childhood poverty, including food security, inequities in education, and homelessness. The application deadline isTuesday, October 10.

PreK-8 Back-to-school drive
The College of Education and Human Ecology (EHE) Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement is sponsoring a college-wide back-to-school drive to collect toiletries and personal care items for Starling PreK-8 School, located in the Franklinton community of the Columbus City School district. Starling serves a diverse student body, including many whom lack basic items for their personal care. I would like to invite the faculty and staff from the College of Pharmacy to join EHE in this collection drive.
I have placed two cardboard boxes in the student lounge marked EHE. Please place items in the boxes between now and next Friday, 9/8. Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for your consideration.

Science Cafe with Dr. Lane Wallace
The library’s first science cafe will be on September 6 and will feature Dr. Wallace talking about the Opioid Crisis.

Topic: The Opioid Crisis
A major contributor to the opioid problem is the culture of American health care. The goal of minimizing chronic pain markedly increased opioid prescriptions over the last 20 years. A small fraction of people chronically using opioid drugs for medical reasons will develop an addiction. Several opioid drugs, including heroin, are available at a relatively cheap price outside of the normal pharmaceutical distribution system. People with addictions often switch to these drugs. The “War on Drugs” is not succeeding in its goal of lessening addiction. A new development in the arena of opioids and pain involves medical marijuana. Lessening the opioid problem will require a multi-faceted approach.

Buckeyes Bring Hope Project

Dear Colleagues,
As we all know, the weather-related devastating event in Houston, Southeastern Texas, and Louisiana is adversely affecting thousands of families. As Buckeyes have a reputation of paying it forward, the College of Nursing has been working to connect with local charities and organizations on the ground in the south to determine their needs and how we can help through an initiative that we are calling “Buckeyes Bring Hope.”
We are creating a fast-response team to bring faculty, staff, students and alums together with community members to provide items for the victims of this terrible flood. I know we can work together and mobilize Buckeye Nation to support our friends in the south.
My staff has contacted two local charities that are already on the ground with connections in these devastated areas, Lifeline and Matthews 25: Ministries, who have offered to support our efforts by collecting and distributing much-needed items to those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Attached are items of great need for the victims of the flood. Updated information will be shared here: go.osu.edu/OSU-BBH. The College of Nursing is serving as one drop off site for these items, beginning on Tuesday 9/5/17; we are working on one or two other drop off sites on campus and I will let you know when those sites are confirmed. We will take items through next Thursday 9/7/17 at noon. An announcement will also go in this Friday’s OnCampus Today to drive people to a webpage that will allow faculty, staff and students the opportunity to get involved in helping and donating to this important cause.

2018 Community Engagement Conference Call for Proposals
Proposals are now being accepted for Ohio State’s inaugural Community Engagement Conference, taking place January 24-25, 2018 in the Ohio Union. Building on the success of the Extension Annual Conference and the university’s Engagement Forum, the conference will bring together faculty, staff, students and community partners to focus on professional development and networking, while exploring new potential engagement partnerships. The theme of this year’s conference is Partnering to Advance Health and Wellness. Proposals are due October 30, 2017.

Travel support available for 4th International Congress on Pathogens at the Human-Animal Interface
The Global One Health initiative (GOHi) of the Office of International Affairs and the Office of Outreach and Engagement are offering travel support funding for Ohio State faculty, staff and students to attend the 4th International Congress on Pathogens at the Human-Animal Interface (ICOPHAI): Environmental Changes and Impact on Global Health Congress, November 7-9, to be convened in Doha, Qatar. Individual presenters are eligible for up to $2,000 to offset the cost associated with attending and participating in the event. Completed applications must be submitted by Aug. 15.
