The College of Pharmacy Office of Outreach and Engagement is accepting nominations for the first ever Outreach and Engagement Awards. The awards and criteria are listed below. To nominate someone, email a letter of recommendation to Laura Hall at hall.42@osu.edu.

College of Pharmacy Engagement Awards

“Faculty/Staff Award for Community Engagement”

Recognizes any faculty/staff member at the College of Pharmacy for exceptional work in community engagement through reciprocity in collaboration with one or more community partners who may be public and/or private sector, local to global, that are external to the university, valuable learning experiences for students and/or other trainees, sustainable contributions, and/or demonstrated impact that addresses an important community need.

  • Awarded annually; recipient eligible only once every three years
  • Nominations (CV and letter(s)) submitted to awards committee by January 15th
  • Recipient awarded at Spring Pharmacy Gala

“Alumni Award for Outstanding Community Engagement”

Recognizes an alumnus or alumna from any training or academic program of the College of Pharmacy for outstanding accomplishments in community engagement.  Nominees should be involved in outreach and engagement that includes reciprocity in collaboration with one or more community partners who may be public and/or private sector, local to global, that are external to the university, valuable learning experiences for students and/or other trainees, sustainable contributions, and/or demonstrated impact that addresses an important community need.

  • Awarded as appropriate and not more than annually; can receive only once
  • Nominations (CV and letter(s)) submitted to awards committee by December 15th
  • Recipient awarded at Spring Pharmacy Gala

“Graduate/Professional Student Award for Outstanding Community Engagement”

Recognizes a graduating Graduate/Professional student for excellence through his or her involvement in community engagement efforts that demonstrate reciprocity in collaboration with one or more community partners who may be public and/or private sector, local to global, that are external to the university, sustainable contributions, and/or demonstrated impact that addresses an important community need.

  • Awarded annually at Hooding Ceremony/Graduate Student Reception
  • Nominations submitted to awards committee by last day of February

“BSPS Student Award for Outstanding Community Engagement”

Recognizes a graduating BSPS student for excellence through his or her involvement in community engagement efforts that demonstrate reciprocity in collaboration with one or more community partners who may be public and/or private sector, local to global, that are external to the university, sustainable contributions, and/or demonstrated impact that addresses an important community need.

  • Awarded annually at BSPS Graduation Lunch
  • Nominations submitted to awards committee by last day of February

 

CPD receives accreditation status from ACPE

The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy’s Office of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) has recently received ACPE Continuing Education Provider accreditation. This will allow CPD to offer continuing pharmacy education credit to any pharmacist in the country. Once courses are completed, the continuing education credit will be automatically loaded onto the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) monitor.

In order to gain accreditation status, CPD was required to complete an extensive self-study and application based on the ACPE Accreditation Standards of Practice for Continuing Pharmacy Education.

“We are excited for the opportunity to expand CPD’s reach across the country. We aim to create new education and training opportunities to advance the profession of pharmacy forward, while reinforcing the skills that are essential to current practice,” said Bella Mehta, director of Continuing Professional Development.

CPD will be launching approximately five online continuing education programs this fall. In addition, the group will launch a certificate program with online/live training programs on Pharmacy-Based Care of Underserved Populations with enrollment beginning September 30th. This program will help prepare pharmacists to be practice ready as the profession moves toward recognizing pharmacists as providers for care of the medically underserved. CPD is also working to develop community pharmacy leadership and administrative training courses through funding from Fisher Leadership Institute.

Generation Rx Collaborative to Receive Student Group Award for Excellence in Community Service Programming

Ohio State Generation Rx CollaborativeColumbus, Ohio – The Generation Rx Collaborative, a student group at Ohio State dedicated to medication safety and misuse prevention education, was named the 2017 recipient of the Student Group Award for Excellence in Community Service Programming by The Ohio State University Office of Engagement. The award will be presented during the annual Engagement Forum on May 3rd at the Ohio Union.

The Generation Rx Collaborative serves as a conduit through which several student groups in the College of Pharmacy work together to promote medication safety in the Central Ohio area and beyond. Through a variety of events they teach the public using Generation Rxresources. As of January 2017, the group has impacted over 36,000 people to help educate them about safe medication practices and the danger of the misuse of prescription medications.

The group has accomplished much this year. Highlights include contracting with the Columbus Blue Jackets to host a Generation Rx Night at Nationwide Arena, multiple presentations to students at Columbus City Schools, hosting a campus-wide candlelight vigil in remembrance of those that have lost their battle to addiction, holding biennial Drug-Take Back Days at the Wilce Student Health Center where nearly two hundred pounds of unused or unwanted medication were collected, and a collaboration with the Collegiate Recovery Community to host a Recovery Ally Training for student pharmacists to serve as patient advocates.

The Student Group Award for Excellence in Community Service Programming is presented by the Office of Student Life, Office of Outreach and Engagement, and the Office of Service-Learning to recognize student groups at The Ohio State University who have rendered exceptional outreach and/or engagement within Ohio’s communities through partnership with a community agency. This award is given to student group that have truly distinguished themselves through their efforts. The recipient of this award has made a significant contribution to our institution’s culture of engagement, further establishing and strengthening Ohio State’s commitment to supporting the communities we serve.

Rodis Recognized for Innovative Programming

Jennifer Rodis receives APhA award.Jennifer L. Rodis, PharmD, BCPS, FAPhA, was recently presented with the Distinguished Achievement Award in Pharmacy Practice from the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) for her work with Partner for Promotion (PFP). The award was created to recognize an individual who has developed and/or implemented an innovative, original pharmacy program or service that is significant to their area of practice and was presented to Rodis at the APhA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA.

Now in its twelfth year, PFP is a collaboration of The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy faculty and students with community-based and health-system pharmacists to train and mentor students and pharmacists through implementation of sustainable advanced e-patient care services.

The model has been so successful that it has been expanded to six other colleges of pharmacy across the United States.

“It’s exciting that we are impacting communities in and around Ohio State,” said Rodis. “It’s even better that we can bring this longitudinal learning experience to pharmacy students across the country to help raise the level of education while also improving the lives of patients.”

PFP has been recognized previously with honors including the Distinguished Service-Learning Award from The Ohio State University, Innovative Teaching Award from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, and a national Merit Award from the American Pharmacists Association.

Generation Rx Lab at COSI welcomes new assistant director

Cynthia CananThe Generation Rx Lab at the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) recently welcomed Cynthia Canan as the new assistant director.

The Lab is an innovative educational experience at COSI run by Canan, lab director Nicole Kwiek, and undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Located in the Life exhibit, visitors of all ages can conduct engaging, hands-on experiments as they learn about the science of drugs.

Canan, a two-time graduate of Ohio State, has a passion for teaching others.

“I really love science education,” said Canan. “I did an internship two years ago with the Generation Rx Lab and loved it. It was great to teach the kids, but I really loved teaching the parents too and seeing their face when they learn something new as well.”

Canan received a BS in Biology and Psychology and a PhD in Biomedical Research with a focus in Immunology. Her hometown is Dublin, Ohio.

Visitors of COSI can stop by the Generation Rx Lab in the Life Exhibit on the second floor to meet Canan and her staff and participate in the Daily Shows.

Student Pharmacist​, E. Michael Murphy, Inaugurated as President of National ​Student Pharmacist​ Organization

E. Michael MurphyE. Michael Murphy, a third-year student pharmacist​ at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy, was inaugurated as the​ national​ ​p​resident of the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP).

“As the APhA-ASP National President I will uphold the values of student pharmacists and promote the mission of APhA-ASP,” said Murphy. “ This will be accomplished by increasing the support structure for student pharmacists, improving patient care through interprofessional collaboration, and advancing the profession globally.”

In addition to his presidential duties, Murphy is active in advocacy to advance the profession of pharmacy.

“Pharmacists and student pharmacists are a support structure for a patient to ensure they receive the most optimal personalized care so that patient can live a happy and fulfilling life. APhA-ASP is a support structure for student pharmacists to ensure they receive the best education, professional growth, and advancement of the profession so that they can be the most knowledgeable and accessible healthcare providers for their community. It is from this viewpoint of the organization that I can see the great benefit to students’ involvement in its activities and programming.”

APhA-ASP is a national organization of student pharmacists that aims to provide opportunities for professional growth, to improve patient care, and to envision and advance the future of pharmacy. Murphy’s additional leadership roles with APhA-ASP have included the APhA Carl F. Emswiller Summer Internship in Association Management, Region 4 Delegate, Ohio State Chapter President-elect, P1 (First-year) Liaison, and Undergraduate Liaison.

Murphy received his Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences from The Ohio State University and is slated to graduate with his Doctor of Pharmacy in 2018. He is originally from ​Columbus, OH.

The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy Named Recipient of National Pharmacy Engagement Award

Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy has been named as the recipient of the 2017 Lawrence C. Weaver Transformative Community Service Award by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP). This accolade is presented annually to one college or school of pharmacy demonstrating a major institutional commitment to addressing unmet community needs through education, practice, and research.

The College of Pharmacy has demonstrated a commitment to improving the health and wellness of our communities, while providing exceptional educational experiences to students since its inception in 1885. Areas of priority for the college include 1) serving vulnerable populations through FQHCs, charitable pharmacies, and free clinics 2) curriculum-based engagement, 3) public education through programs such as Generation Rx, a program to improve safe medication practices, and 4) global pharmacy advancement to impact global populations through programming at home and abroad.

Jennifer Rodis, PharmD, assistant dean for outreach and engagement at the College of Pharmacy, has headed outreach endeavors since 2013.

“We are extremely excited to be recognized for our commitment to improving the health and wellness of people everywhere,” said Rodis. “From local to global, we strive to balance the needs of community health with research and student education to provide a win-win environment for all stakeholders.”

Last year alone at the college:

  • Students provided 9,551 in volunteer service hours, at 130 separate locations that served 37,715 patients
  • Outreach and Engagement activities received over $571,000 in funding
  • 33 Posters, Publications, and Presentations were tied directly to Outreach and Engagement activities

Representatives from the College of Pharmacy will be presented with the award at the AACP Annual Meeting in Nashville, TN, in July 2017.

Pills, Potions, Poisons Featured in Magazine

The American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET) featured Pills, Potions, and Poisons in their latest publication, The Pharmacologist (see pages 47-49).

The program is currently directed by Drs. Downing and Summers. The deadline to apply for the 2017 program is April 16, 2017.
