Congratulations are in order for Madison Hart of the Bumgardner lab! Madison was recently awarded an Undergraduate Research Office- Honors Research Distinction Scholarship in the amount of $3500 in July 2020. The title of her project is: Investigating critical developmental factors for novel, antibody-suppressor CD8+ T cells. Her research will begin this summer and conclude in spring of 2021.
Researchers at The Ohio State University College of Medicine are the first to identify an immune cell that may predict a transplant patient’s risk of developing antibodies that can cause organ rejection. This discovery could lead to the development of therapies to prevent complications after transplant surgery.

Our labs very own Jing L. Han, MD was recently awarded the 2020 AAI Trainee Abstract Award. The abstract titled: Antibody-suppressor CD8+ T cells ameliorate antibody-mediated rejection following kidney transplant in mice, was accepted for both oral and poster presentation. Jing will attend the Immunology 2020 annual meeting in May to present this and one other abstract accepted for poster presentation. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Han!
“As a new student joining the lab for only a few days, I was able to jump right in, learning about basic immunology and research-specific cell work. Jason Zimmerer, the research scientist, who walked me through my first week did a great job answering all my questions and making sure I was understanding the jobs that we were doing. The emphasis on safety in the lab was never left unspoken which gave me a higher level of comfortability in the work I was doing. I was additionally introduced to animal work as well, which is a big factor in the work and research done in the Bumgardner Lab. After my week in the lab I am comfortable with the safety, machinery, and basic idea of the research done, and it’s given me a passion to continue diving into this field of research.”
